I am momentarily grief-stricken when I see that I'd have to pay more than someone else for the same shoe/ different size, but I quickly return to being glad that market forces are allowed to work their magic. I know that my (temporary) disappointment means some other woman's delight.

Deb is exactly right. Amazon sells some items directly through them but also lists items that are sold by a different store. They may or may not be fulfilled by Amazon's warehouse; sometimes those 3rd party sellers will still be eligible for Prime shipping. Look at the description of "Sold and shipped by..." When you are selecting a size, and very often, you'll see its because the pricing differs from one seller to another that may have different sizes in stock.
(A LOT of Amazon's online sales are through 3rd party sellers. I get a ton of used books from small bookstores through that marketplace!)

It doesn't bother me. It is just how the market should work. I pretty much only buy shoes from Nordstrom and Amazon. One for easy return, the other for awesome prices on brands i like.

I think it's smart of Amazon, and I'm sure it gets them more sales: from reading reviews, it sounds like it gets people to try a broader range of sizes to get the deal. I'm curious as to their algorithm for those ever-changing prices. I'm sure supply and demand is part of it, but I think there's more. I have learned to watch anything I am considering, regardless of current price.

But it cuts both ways, and it definitely annoys me when I put something on my wish list and it doubles in price overnight!

On shoes, I am a size 11, and I am more annoyed when companies don't make (or suppliers don't bother to order) my size! Fortunately that's less and less common these days.

It doesn't bother me because I just assume that those colors are assumed not to be as popular--but I'm glad they're making them anyway, instead of just doing boring brown and black. As for sizes, I never thought about it, because as a hard-to-fit person, I'm almost always paying full price for my clothes. So I'm used to it.

I can't say that it does. If I want a black shoe, seeing it at a cheaper price in red doesn't bother me. The size thing, maybe that would. But I am really trying to not be influenced by sales. If what I want is at a price that seems reasonable and is affordable to me, then that is what's important.

I hadn't thought of it that way--as a size 5, I'm just glad that Amazon carries my size. I would much rather be a size 7.5 and able to try on shoes at any price point, in any physical store.

I admit to being jealous of those who wear a size 6, though. Standard size carried everywhere, but still frequently goes on sale.

It maddens me like Boden reducing the price on the same item in a less popular color or style. Sorry, it cost the same to make so should be same price right? Amazon is particularly annoying to alert you if you have the item in your cart they tell you when it's gone up and down 2 cents or more.

Laura - I think our time has come. I find tons of 10s on sale (and never used to) I had a pair of booties in my cart in 10.5 (my size if they are narrow) at $51 and the same booties in my regular size 10 were $79. The reviews said they ran big so I deleted them altogether.

I think it's just an Amazon thing, because it happens with clothes they sell, too - each size will have a different price, or each color. Most 'traditional' retailers don't price that way; all sizes or all colors are the same, until you get to closeout clearance or something.

I suppose for Amazon they can track demand and supply so specifically and quickly that it's based on that, whereas other retailers sort of overgeneralize and take a loss on some things to make a profit on others.

I wonder if, like the article about return policies linked to yesterday, if it causes higher sales volume - customers see their size on sale and buy right away rather than waiting for some later time, because they figure it'll sell out or go back up in price.

It's funny, I'm a size 10 shoe and XL clothes, and I always feel like my sizes are the ones that never go on sale. Self-selection bias at work.

I think the differences is between companies. Some of the amazon stores are clearing stock and that is all that is left, hence the low price. I check to see if the different prices are from the same seller.

It doesn't bother me because I figure it's a more intelligent pricing system that reflects supply and demand and the timeline of how long ago an item was at retail. Although as a medium in clothes and size 8 shoe, I tend to often find my size sold out on clearance, or at least not the least expensive option if there is tiered pricing. But hey, if it's not a bargain for me, at least it is for someone else

Does it bother you when there is such a big price range between certain sizes and colors of soo many shoes on Amazon? I buy mostly 7 1/2 and sometimes I just pass when sizes in my range are as much as twice the cost of sizes say 5, 6, 9, 10 etc. If ones I want are say $70.00 in those sizes or in colors like green or blue, and in neutrals like beige or black and my size they are $140.00. Guess the reason for this is these odd colors or less popular sizes will be left over and eventually reduced anyhow, but still bothers me.
