Totally agree that you need it to be snug so you can actually move in the water. I like a lot of the brands Brooklyn mentioned, didn’t realize they were Australian. There are also some I like at

I am a huge fan of the rash guard! Prevents sunburn, releases you from modesty worries (is my top still tied? Is a boob falling out?), provides a nice layer under a life jacket to prevent chafing, protects you from scraping skin on underwater rocks and coral.....I could go on and on. Essential features: full zip front, high neck. Desirable but not essential: long sleeves that hook around thumbs, pocket with a zipper to keep stuff in and a vent to let water out. I get mine from Speedo and they last for yeeeeeears. I wear a bikini top or just a sports bra underneath.

I'll second Brooklyn's recommendations, Australia has a great variety of swimwear on offer and also great beach cover-ups - my new bathers are in finds. You MUST get a zip front rashie. I once tried to get out of an overhead top when wet and thought I may have to be cut out of it or dislocate my shoulder when in a cubical at my gym. Worn once and never again. It was fine to get on and off when dry.

Just got a cute one from Roxy. Also got a nice inexpensive zip up one off amazon. Both worked great - it was really lovely to be out in the strong sun and not worry about that hard to reach shoulder and back area getting sun. Combined with the option to wear my cover up that has UPF 50 and a broad rimmed hat I was able to get only the sun I wanted

You mentioned in the other thread that you were keeping fingers crossed about your bikini: me too! Just wanted to take the occasion to shout out to Nike swimwear. They made a suit earlier this year which has really impressed me. It's the perfect combo of functional and nice looking, with substantial fabric that can move and stays put. Those particular pieces are no longer in stock but they appear to make rash guards for women (on phone so can't add new finds). Again, I was really impressed with the quality!

Agree with Brooklyn re Australian brands! You know they will be serious about sun protection :)
And also that a zip up one is the best idea, because they are easier to get on and off. Rashies (as we call them!) can get hot, and one with a zip can let in a bit of air, once you are out of the direct sun.

Totally biased of course, but I would look for an Australian brand. Rash guards are our jam! Brands like Billabong, Speedo, Rip Curl, Sea Folly and Aqua Blu offer great design and UV protection. If you can’t get it locally a lot of Australian retailers offer international shipping for free or at very reasonable rates (often around $10). I prefer the long sleeve, front zip versions (similar to the pics) because they are easier to get out of when wet. I wear a crop top underneath.

J.Crew used to have several fun ones, but the selection is very limited at the moment (a simple solid-coloured one in navy or black), a 'onesie' in a floral pattern, and a very fun one in a stripe (could be your cup of tea;-)

I have two rash guards from Lands End and evening wear them as tops. Both are long sleeved crew neck tees. One is plain white and one is a navy and white stripe. I sized up to a small and like the fit. Both get compliments. I have two swimsuits and the white can go with either one. I hear you on the selection. I just got a new Lands End sale catalogue in the mail today that features more plain colors like black, navy, cobalt, a violet (berry), teal and white, and will probably order a navy and a teal or black. They also have some cute swim shorts in plain and patterns. Everything is 30% off with code “STOCKUP” through Jan. 14. The rash guard also makes a great travel top. The shorts could be worn without a swimsuit on a beach vacation. They come in 4 lengths from 3” to 11” and in regular, petite, Long and Plus sizes, as do the rash guards. On sale, they are $27.96-$38.46.
Lands End women’s rash guard is available for less in navy and white on Amazon

I do so often wish Lands End would tweak their styling to include some options that are just a bit more stylish! I want & need the full coverage and practical designs but the particular solid colours and patterns they use can read so frumpy. I like my rash guard from them for practical reasons but the pattern I settled on was just the best they had. Good luck in your search. I always burn my chest area down south despite best efforts, and the effects (sun spots etc) seem to show up right away these days.

I’m started this thread so as not to hijack another forum member’s thread with my tangental post! In 4 weeks I will be taking a 2 week vacay in a sunny destination and I’m hoping to add a rash guard or two to my vacation capsule. I have never worn a rash guard before, relying on a high SPF sunscreen, however I have also experienced burnt shoulders, etc. after much in-and-out of the water which likely washed off even SPF Sport type cream. I want to give a rash guard a try. I would like it to be reasonably well (close?) fitting so that I can comfortably wear in in the water without it bagging out, and I would like it to be fashionable, if that is possible.

I was leaning towards Lands’ End due to good reviews, but atm I don’t fancy their selection. I am waiting for an updated catalogue to see what they have for the coming season. Athleta and LLBean online did not have much on offer. I am going to look at Boden (as suggested by Cardiff Girl) and follow up some leads from Nemosmom. If anyone has any recommendations, please share them.

FWIW the Lands’ End rash guards come in petite, regular, long, and plus long as well as sizes XS (2-4) - 3X (24-26W).
