I agree with Rachylou about heavy handbags. Why, oh why???

Some earrings are heavy, too.

I've definitely thought about this when seeing some of the really heavily layered looks.

And ditto to Ginger's comments about earring weight. I have one stretched out hole due to an unfortunate tugging incident many years ago, and I've switched to lighter, smaller earrings over the years. Sadly, many earrings just feel too heavy to me now.

You're totally right. I have a brass bib necklace that I love but rarely wear because the weight starts being noticeable by lunchtime.

It's a good point. I've gotten neck aches from heavy metal pieces. Not pearls ... But mine are all small scale

That is wise advice. You're right, a lot of handmade items use minerals and stones, which are inherently pretty heavy. The trend is also for a rough, chunky, bold look, which means such pieces are heavier.

My mother is always very careful about the weight of earrings; she has a horror of getting long, stretched-out ear lobes like her mother's friends. ;) But I didn't consider that necklaces may also be painful. Thank you!

after going thru all the great posts and responses about necklaces and pearls recently, I just have one thing to add, When you try these looks consider the weight of the whole thing. A heavier piece may cause a real discomfort on the back of your neck if worn for a longer period of time. I have some pendant and multi strand pieces that I can comfortably wear for only a short time. I always consider the weight when I purchase or make a piece. So much handmade stuff at shows are for show, not to be worn. Pearls and thinner chains are generally light weight and layer easily. When getting into pendants or adding broaches it can get quite weighty.
