Thanks for those links, Marianna!
The second pair does sound nice...but I worry that the heel may be too high for me. It's almost three inches, right? Is it stable looking or skinny?
Could someone describe the hardware and wear it's placed?
I fear this may be hopeless.

I really like the second pair I linked to, too! They're made by the same brand as Angie's oxfords. Really elegant but still stylish. I think you'd enjoy them. Lots of positive reviews on the site too.

I like the second pair that Marianna posted. They are heeled "riding" boots with a silver buckle and the top. The heel is thinner so it seems dressier.

Michelle, there are a lot of variables, so I can imagine it's very frustrating when you can't really tell what those variables are, visually. The Worlds have a nicer toe shape than the others; it's hard to describe. But, they are also riding boots and flat, so I'm thinking you'd prefer a classic dressy pair instead.

The Carly's and Zoe's have a bit of a "cowgirl" vibe, to my eye (possibly the thick heel?), which I am not fond of. I don't think it would go as well with your style as the more feminine and classic Ella. That said, the Ella are most likely not walking shoes since the heels are narrow and the toes are pointy.

Thanks all for the suggestions!
Maya, interesting...I believe the Zoes and the Carly's (which I posted above) are the same boot but with a different calf-width?
I definitely feel I need a dressier pair, which works with my style. I will consider the World riding boots too, but I actually don't even know if my size is left. ... just checked, and they don't appear to be. GRRRR!
Maya, what other styles were working better for you?
Did I mention I hate this?

Here are some other options I like:

http://www.widewidths.com/step.html
http://www.widewidths.com/zoe.html

I just can't seem to love the elongated toe on the Ellas.
Of course, this is highly subjective and doesn't invalidate them as an option. But I thought I'd throw out some other options I saw too.

For heels, I'm not sure. I guess the Ellas. To be honest I'm not wild about any of them though. I much prefer the "World" style.

I'm looking through mid heels on the site and there are a lot of options I find much more attractive than the ones that have been posted, but I haven't combed through them for height and size or anything.

I was hoping for something with more of a heel, maybe 1.5 to two inches.
Angie, no, I don't wear size 12. I'm in the size 10 ballpark, preferrably with wider widths.

My sympathies. Boots are one of my favorite items to wear but one of the hardest things to shop for. We have such an abundance of great boots this season, and the only pairs I've seen that really "lit my fire" are not viable options due to my calf circumference.

Rangers: They are kind of a dark brown - not really chestnut and not quite chocolate, but a medium brown. They barely have a heel - very chunky, and in the picture it almost looks lower than 1". There is a strap with buckles that runs vertically from the top of the boot all the way to the ankle - I think the strap is around 1" wide, and the entire strap is surrounded by an elastic gore panel, which means that the boots should be stretchy and form-fitting. The toe shape is pretty round.
I think they look like a very sleek pair of riding boots, and I'd go for them myself in black!

Faith - a bit sleeker & less "equestrian" than the Rangers. I could see you wearing this with some of your dresses, such as the beloved cobalt blue dress, with black patterned hose. The heel looks slightly higher, and there is a 1" strap running horizonally across the front of the ankle with a buckle at the side. The elastic gore is on the inside of the boot and is only about 3" long, so the stretch will probably be less forgiving in the rest of the boot. These also have a round toe.

Carly - The heel is quite a bit higher & thinner than the Faiths, which you probably already know from reading the product description. (It might be less stable to walk in.) There is a long seam on the outside of the boot - maybe 1 cm wide - running all vertically the way down, and a built-in seam or strap placed horizontally around the boot above the ankle. The buckle is in the back. They are pretty and sleek, but personally I prefer the Faiths over the Carly pair. The toe is somewhat round but looks narrower than the previous two.

Valentine - A bit dressier IMO than the previous pairs. The heel looks lower to me than the Carly pair, but is still not very chunky/substantial. There isn't a lot of detail on the front other than a thin vertical seam down the front of the boot, but on the back there is a very pretty laced seam running vertically down the boot almost to the ankle. It looks like the back seam would allow for a very close fit. The toe shape is somewhat square.

Ella - these have quite a pointy, elongated toe. The heel is VERY narrow. There is a thick elastic panel in the inside of the boot - about 1.5" wide and 3.5" long, I think. (They don't look like they would be the best boots for running around the city with Reta - I would scuff the toe all the time in them!)

Simon: These actually remind me of the Faith boots, minus the ankle strap. There is a stretchy, V-shaped panel down the back of the boots and a zipper running from the ankle to about 2" from the top, so I think that these would be easier to get on than the average OTK boot. Looks great and not "pirate-like" when folded over. I vote to try them!

Overall, my favorites are the Ranger, Faith, and Simon pairs of boots. Good luck in your search!

Michelle, I have large calves as well, and I feel your pain.

I agree with Anna that the Ranger is not quite chestnut, but more of a mid-tone brown. If you are looking for a brown boot, however, I think these are attractive.

As for the black boots you listed, my favorite is the Faith, which has a clean, classic look, with a buckle across the low ankle, which adds a bit of edge. I think these would be a great purchase. I also like the Ella, which looks a little dressier than the Faith, just because it has a thinner heel, longer toe, and no embellishment at the ankle. If you want something dressier, I would go for the Ella over the Faith.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the Carly or the Valentine. The Carly is tough to really see in the photo, but it looks like it has some kind of elastic or bunching at the top of the boot shaft that I can't quite figure out. The Valentine has lacing up the back, which is not a look I personally like.

The OTK boots look like they could be nice. I suspect I will probably be in the minority here, and I can anticipate Angie coming in and saying she has put people of all body types in OTK boots, but I generally think they look best on people who are quite thin. That's because I feel that OTKs put a lot of emphasis on the upper thigh (assuming they are worn with skinnies) because of where they break on the body. That's not to say they won't look fantastic on you, though! Only one way to find out....

I agree that the chestnut don't look all that chestnut, they're a medium brown without much richness. I like the style though, a classic riding boot.

Michelle, what kind of heel are you looking for? Maybe that would help with your decision. The Ranger and Faith are riding boots with a small stacked heel. The Valentine also has a stacked heel but it's a bit higher and more tapered. The Carly and Ella have a dressier higher heel (but not outrageous). I think for skinny jeans I prefer a riding boot but for skirts I like small heel for some lift, but that's my personal preference.

I don't think the shade of chestnut in the Ranger is a very good version of the color, reads like a flat mid tone brown on my monitor.
I like the Faith, and Ella is very sleek. Also like the lace-up detailing on the Valentine.
I think the OTK boots look nice. But if I remember correctly you are tall, so they may not be true OTK.

Time for Michelle's least favourite thing on the earth, BOOT SHOPPING!!! Due to my insanely huge calves, this process is a very special brand of hell for me, and one which I had hoped to forego this year. Alas, the zipper on my one pair of boots broke, and while it's getting fixed, it just reminded me that I I shouldn't really postpone this. The boots I have, while fine, never fully lit my fire. Time to find something that really, really does work!

Below are a few options I found in sizes that fit for me. Please give me honest feedback on them all. If none of them are really worth the high price tag, then I'll have to go bootless.

I'm most interested in a black pair, but this is the first time I've ever seen chestnut in my size. What's it look like?
Ranger in chestnut: http://www.widewidths.com/ranger2.html

Ok, black optionsk, in varying styles. Please note that the 15-inch shaft heights are best for me because of my height, but I have one 14-inch pair in here just because:
Faith in black: http://www.widewidths.com/faith.html
Carly in black: http://www.widewidths.com/carly.html
Valentine in black: http://www.widewidths.com/valentine.html
Ella in black: http://www.widewidths.com/ella.html

Pipedream: they actually have OTK boots in my size!! They aren't currently stocked in my size, but would I be wrong to put these on my Xmas list? Are OTK boots better on those with slender legs? No offense taken if the answer is yes!
