Diane, I think you had great style before; your new photos just look more current. You seem to be doing a nice job of evolving with the times.
Karie, you are so much more chic looking. The silhouettes you choose now are more flattering, with on-trend touches of style and color.
Thanks for the observations, Astrid and others!

Sheila, glad you find this inspiring.

Karie, thanks! And thanks for participating. You've come a long way yourself, I love your newer looks. Although I wouldn't call the old ones "ghastly". My favourite is #4, love the top and blazer together.

Suz, that reminds me of my boss. She's over sixty and has a gorgeous white/grey pixie, a very stylish woman. When I started there she had a bob and when she one day came in with the pixie it was an awesome change. It also looked way better with her style. I asked and it turned out she always had a pixie and the longer hair was the experiment, not the other way around. And too bad about the boots, but if they're uncomfortable they have to go.

Diane, I think it's interesting that you don't want to analyse it too deeply. I think maybe you're instincts are right - I think I'm actually doing and feeling much better when I listen more to my gut reaction. I love to analyse and put things in order, but maybe it's important to not overdo it when it comes to style.

Woah Suz! Quite different, less 'done' and more cool and modern.

Sharan, I agree with Karie. I feel a more cohesive look perhaps.

Karie, I see a more modern gal too and pulled together or cohesive. What a fun thread!

Rachy, to answer your question... I feel more 'now' and relaxed about my style. I don't feel like I want to over analyse my style though as I feel that if I start over- thinking I may lose it! I can really see a difference myself when I look at the 'befores'. I'm also liking the 'cool' comments :)

Wow, what a great thread this is turning out to be!! Thanks for starting it, Astrid. I hope some others will hop on.

Thanks for all the compliments, people, but honestly, it's all Angie's doing. She said "cut your hair and the rest will follow immediately" (or words to that effect, and she was 100% correct.

I didn't really have a "style" when I joined YLF, to be honest. I hadn't been paying any attention to fashion for decades and was literally wearing hand-me-downs. So that partly explains the "stepford wives" quality -- it wasn't really "me" in the photos.

Also, I had ALWAYS worn my hair short, apart for a few blips (once per decade I would grow it out for a year or two and then chop it) and I joined YLF in the middle of one of those blips. But it truly was a blip, not "me," and that comes across in the pics. And with longer hair, a lot of the clothes that had looked good on me in the past didn't work, and I didn't know what to replace them with.

That's why Sharan's right -- #2 is an outfit that -- while it includes dated pieces and worn out items -- is much much closer to my current aesthetic. Once I cut my hair I had an easier time remembering/ finding what I really liked at my core.

Astrid, I like those boots in #2 also and I still have them! But unfortunately, they are really uncomfortable, so I have to pass them along.

Astrid, #2 and #3 look fabulous - you really have come a long way. Sharan, you definitely have a more pulled together, cohesive look now. Suz, wha??? Who is that woman with the long hair?! You and Diane have both changed quite a bit in both hair and outfits. Much more streamlined and modern.

Here are my offerings:

#1 and #2 are from my first WIWs (fall of 2012). Ghastly, both of them! You can see why I never wear dress pants anymore. On the other hand, ankle pants and cigarette pants seem to fit much better overall - go figure - and #3 and #4 are two of my favorite outfits that I repeat often.

Abc, I hope so too. We all should!

Thanks Lyn. I love the way you phrased that.

Thanks Style Fan. I do like the middle length, but I feel more "me" right now.

Thanks Jackie! I really have to repeat that outfit sometime soon.

Thanks Sharon! You're right, I'm back to being "me" now, it's just a more modern and simple version. I definitely made some detours that made me feel more like I was in costume and I don't care about that at all in hindsight.

Shevia, thanks!

Diminity, thanks! I'm sure you will feel right at home here and have a lot of fun in the process.

Sharan, thanks for posting your pics! I do think you already had a great and distinctive style before, but we've definitely seen some change. To me it feels like your outfits have become more edgy and at the same time more pulled together. Does that makes sense? I love the look in #4, those widelegs are just fantastic.

Astrid, it's fun to see your transformation! Thanks for sharing these photos. I also love outfits 2 and 3.
Suz and Diane, your photos are so fun to see also. Suz, you made quite a change between the first two photos! The hair made a big part of that transformation, but also your outfit--it looks very similar to your esthetic now. I mean, I could see you wearing a version of it now, with some updated tweaks.

I'm posting a few photos here: 1 and 2 are at-home and work looks from Jan and Feb 2012. (1 is from my first WIW.) 3 and 4 are at-home and work looks from Nov 2014. The main thing I see in my photos is that I've gotten at least a little more comfortable with taking my photo!

I can see the successful transformations in all three sets of pictures, and it reflects what I want to achieve too! While all the outfits were nicely put together, there's a modernity and freshness to the more recent photos. Of course, I'm new here and I don't know any of you, but it also seems that your true personalities are coming out in your clothing because there's a greater degree of originality in the later photos. At least, that's my guess!

I do buy different things, but I also wear them differently. So a bit of both. I have some things I still use (see the black skirt and my bag in #5), but those were the more classic and "grown up" pieces I had back then.

LOL, Laura, I know Suz mentioned the 'ladies who lunch' recently on Claire's thread, too, when she talked about their past style.

Ha, rachylou, I was thinking along the same lines with Suz's before and after - there's a very done quality to the before pic, very 'ladies who lunch' and never laugh because it gives you wrinkles kinda vibe. Which, assuming she hasn't been gaslighting us the whole time, does not match Suz's personality at all.

Suz, your style journey has always been so illuminating for my own, but true enough I found YLF well after you'd embarked. When you show your early pictures... ok, slap my hand, you look so very beautiful to me in them... but I do, ahem, wonder what happened to make you stop taking your Stepford wife pills.

Ok, ok. I know I know. I am so wrong in the head. We all know that..

Astrid, your style has definitely developed! The haircut is an amazing change. I really love you in a turtleneck with short hair.

I joined in 2011. Here are two outfits, pre-haircut and post. I was wearing a hand-me-down dress in #1 (from a nice Canadian designer but not something I picked myself) and a jacket and boots from consignment in #2. I did not have any money to spend on my wardrobe so did what I could.

#3 and #4 are from this past week.

Yes, they do - I was surprised but the cut is rather low maintenance. I can definitely see myself going a bit shorter, I was in fact thinking about asking for it on my next appointment in ten days.

Oh wow, Diane. Your look has changed quite a bit. And your hair too. Loving it longer and lighter. Suits you to a tee.

Astrid, it's amazing how a new 'do can refresh your entire style isn't it. I wouldn't be surprised if you went a little shorter too. The curls are behaving really well in this shorter style. xo

Thanks for participating, Diane! Love it. You really have got a kind of coolness to your style now that you hadn't back then. I was also surprised at the colors in the first two pics. My favourite is #3 - you look great!

Thanks Staysfit. I don't think it has to be that long ago, for some. It all depends. For me it was a slow journey, mostly because I'm on a budget and never could replace or buy a lot of things at once.

Thanks Laura. Yes, I can see the color adjustment as well.

Thanks Angie! I'm really loving the shorter do. I feel very happy with that change.

#2 and #3 take the cake for me. Those are GREAT looks. A more modern and updated version of the style you love. And fun new shorter 'do too. xo

Thanks for sharing these. I'll have to go look and see if I have old pics to share (or at least ones that aren't too cringeworthy).

The thing I notice most with these, besides the change in your hair, is how you've gravitated to darker, more saturated colors, and I think they really suit you well.
