That makes sense. The puckering is on the shoulder and down the body, not the sleeve if anyone is wondering. They’re little ripples along the seamline, more like the fabric is warped.

Derek is great, gives a lot of very good advice on fit and garment care. It is mostly for men but still very informative and useful for us as well.

Bella, I've been following the same guy on Twitter, learning what I can. I have found it difficult to steam tailored jackets, unless it's just a wrinkle from being packed. It is so much easier to use the steamer than get out the old ironing board, but I do it once in a while.

I mostly just steam my linen things, never tried anything heavy. I have gotten puckering on some of my Kettlewell things (nothing I steamed)- where some fabric in random places got thinner :/

Yes April. Especially with wool since it can get "shaped" using tailors ham and pressing clappers in addition to steam. So I can see that a steamer is not a one size fits all.

Fascinating. Wouldn't puckering also have to do with the fiber content of the threads used on a seam?

Hi Lyn, I am not an expert by any means (I hardly ever iron my clothes or steam!), but what I understand him to be saying is that ironing and steaming are very different. A good analogy to ironing (again from his thread) is curling your hair with a curling iron (as opposed to exposing it to steam in a sauna for example). Curling helps the clothes retain their shape (especially with items like suits and jackets), whereas steaming releases the fabric.

As to the issue of puckering, again my understanding is that there are different kinds of puckering. As you said, some puckering is due to poor fit. But steaming also creates a different kind of puckering. Somebody asked him that question, here is a helpful visual:
https://twitter.com/HollyBulla.....9824052225

ETA: I should probably add that there is whole thread with pictures and explanations, not a single post. It is coming up properly on my phone, but not on my laptop's browser. So if you cannot see the rest of the posts, maybe click on his profile and scroll down to see the whole thread.

Ref "The puckering you see on Biden's suit—starting from his shoulder and going down his armhole—is a result of steaming".

I don't know about steamers unfortunatelly but I iron often (inlcuding DH's suits if needed). Is it a difference between results of a steamer vs. an iron then?

And he follows with "Sometimes I tell men "don't steam ur suit". He should have added perhaps rather to iron it properly??

My other version would be these puckerings appear rather because the back or the upper arm is NOT wide enough or NOT cut properly enough on his particullar body OR even dare I say a flimsy (or not interlined) fabric?

Just curious what others may say about this (I am not a proffessional at all---just do all the alterations for my familly members with good results by myself and love occasionally doing a DIY of clothing project).

There is a guy on Twitter, who writes about menswear. He recently wrote a very informative thread on garment steamers and why they should not be used on hefty items like jackets and coats:
https://twitter.com/dieworkwea.....6739837952
I enjoy reading his posts even though he writes about men's fashion since his general point is that style is not about fashion but quality, fit and care.
