Your measurements are VERY close to mine. My shoulder measurement is larger than my hip or thigh measurement, but I have those pear shaped thighs. Angie considers me a pear with a strong shoulder line. I follow the rules for pears on the bottom, but for hourglass on the top because I don't need any help emphasizing my shoulders!!

Thanks everyone! I always thought of myself as a pear because of my small chest and bigger hips but this make all kinds of sense as to why my clothes are not quite working out. I think I am closer to a rectangle when I am skinny and an hourglass when I am a bit bigger.

Looking forward to more pics, brazendoxy, but I have to say that you don't look at all pear-like to me! In fact, at 40", your shoulders more than balance your 38" hips, so I'd say we might be looking at an hourglass, rectangle or even an inverted triangle here. One thing I've learned from YLF is that body shape has very little do to with your bust size- how the shoulders balance the hips is much more important.

Oh, and I also have v. thick legs, and am quite self-conscious about them. My calves are frighteningly muscular, but I've learned to accept them. Stick around and you will, too!

What an amazing place to visit.
Your questions are very important in that you have a lifestyle change. If you would like a bit more personal help I would suggest posting a picture of your self in body hugging tank top and bike shorts or something like that. Have your arms at your side in the pic so we can see your shoulders in relation to your hips. Maybe show a pic from front, back and side.
I'm sure Angie and the others will have some great ideas for building your teaching wardrobe. I am so glad you came here to begin building this wardrobe to avoid costly mistakes.

Thanks for your comments San, they are really sweet & helpful. I am very excited about teaching. The photo was taken in Cambodia at Angkor Wat on a recent trip abroad.

From this picture you look rectangle or hour glass to me. At least, I cannot see the pear tendancies, but in your description it sounds like the pear tendencies are noticable from the side, as in, you are wider viewing from the side?
What an awesome picture. Where in the world was it taken?
You are very pretty. Congratulations on your new teaching job!!! It sounds like you have worked hard for this. Fantastic!

Hello:

I just discovered this site a few days ago and I am totally hooked!

My question is about body type, I think I am a pear but I am kind of confused. I am 5'10" and measurements are: hip-38, waist-28, bust-34 and shoulders-40. I usually wear a size 8 on top and bottom. The truly strange thing is have normal hips but really thick legs & saddlebags, & my calf is 16". I don't know anyone else who wears a 34 A bra but needs to buy wide-calf boots. Any ideas? I prefer to wear clothes to disguise my legs. I would welcome any suggestions as I am pretty much ignorant about how to dress. I recently transitioned from a grad student to a teaching job and I would like to know how to look more polished.

Thanks!
