Thanks Rachylou! Hair back works this time of year, but putting it up is chilly. My son laughs at me for that, but it’s true.
C, I’m an OBG OG, teehee, enjoying the challenge along everybody else.
It’s crazy how much the weather makes me feel like me. Looking at the new stuff in finds, I bought all 3 toppers in Florida, called the vest my “Florida winter coat” but rarely wore it later than the 7:00 am school run. The trucker jacket still had tags, and I couldn’t really use the plaid either. I bought the jeans when we moved there, having no concept of how rarely the temp would be comfortable to wear them. The pink pants purchase was just before we left, in anticipation of Berlin. And of course none of the underpinnings work there. If you’d asked what was missing in my life, I never would have said “layered clothing” but that appears to have been the case, lol.

Brooklyn, I was hoping you’d chime in on that, because you are the pattern mixologist extraordinaire. I like your idea of calming things down by wearing less busy footwear. It’s too cold for the shorts anymore this year, so they are washed & in a stack to take down to the cellar, but I will remember that for next time they come out. Thanks, and for the comments on skirt & flares too.

You are hitting your stride. I like the shorts outfits the best. More so in 4/5 with the tall boots than in 1 with the booties. Although I do like the pattern mix with the plaid in 1 the booties and contrast with the darker tights just makes it a little too hectic for my eye. Do you have flat tall boots? I’m thinking that would work really well with the shorts outfits too. Bit more casual. Love the plaid skirt and agree with Angie’s comments. You suit flares really well.

Thank you all for your comments, compliments, and suggestions!

Angie, such effusive praise—wow. I might even take the “intern” out of my screen name ;)

Such differing opinions on the plaid jacket with the shorts, including Angie’s Killer ^killer! Kathie, I wonder if tights that are more on the red side of burgundy would work better. I will have to try out different bags—Santa’s helper is not the role I’m going for. While I love Jenn’s idea of more pattern or an outrageous, OTT piece, I don’t have anything that fills that remit. So I’ll have to try either my little black Coach or maybe this putty-colored le Sak with guitar strap, if I need to carry more stuff.

Kathie, “mixing old with new, practical, pattern” sums up how I like to dress very well. Thank you for the observation and articulation. Irina, I get it that this and pattern mixing aren’t your thing. I often look at how soothing and put-together you look in your solid color outfits and am amazed—I think I’d feel like a great big blob in those looks, but they are are so good on you. Maybe it’s our size that makes the difference, idk.

It sounds like the boots don’t strike people as too high for the shorts. I’m glad, because I enjoyed wearing them again. They are by Liz Claiborne, who I don’t think is known for super-comfortable shoes, but they feel surprisingly good on. Jenn, I haven’t tried those boots with this sweater, but they did work well with a similar color sweater that has flecks of gold in it that I posted about earlier. Sal, thanks for the overall confirmation about shorts+tights.

Thanks for all the love for the skirt. You know that’s a piece I really want to work. It makes me smile because of the memories, the swing, and because the colors just make me happy and feel like I’m authentic and consistent over years and years. The berry colors Bijou points out appear in every one of these (I hadn’t noticed or planned that) were with me even then. Slim cat and Jenn, nope, those aren’t the looks I’m going for with it. My red puffer, pink puffy vest, espresso bomber jacket and blue wool coat could all work, but the one I’m most into trying is a black moto jacket that’s a bit oversized for me, along with the black boots Angie mentions. They are back from the cobbler, but I’m still waiting for hosiery to arrive in the mail.

Slim cat, I was trying to channel le Ped’s cool slouch in that photo, didn’t realize the join of the mirrors could be mistaken for a stripper pole, lol. Glad you like the outfit. Angie, I always appreciate hearing explanations of why things work—I often feel it, but don’t know a logical reason for it, so can’t repeat it. The vest giving that big flannel top some structure is one of those things. Thanks. Jenn, nice delineation of when/where these work. I agree with you that these are not for making a splash or for events; spending so much time around home these days, they’re kind of thing I’ve had on a lot recently.

The appreciation for my 70s Western outfit is surprising—glad you’re joining me in the fun. That, especially Kathie’s comment on the pattern mix with the jacket, has me tempted to hang onto the shirt after all. Bijou, the flares are a bigger step into a trend than I usually take and I’m having fun with them.

Irina, I’ve worn the cardi with black and blue jeans and a black sweater dress, and probably more. I’ll have to post some photos.

I’ll carry on with my colors and pattern mixing, shorts with tights when it’s warm enough again, with puffers and boots in the meantime. I know now how to present any OBGs I’m pulling out to wear—always with at least an attempt at styling. Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions. I’ll try to get a follow-up post together soon (once that delivery gets here).

What Angie said. I really like your winter style - and I do think the layering and mix here really suit you.

A few comments:
- You wear shorts and tights so well. It is a hard look to carry off and you can do so.
- hats suit you as do puffers.
- I like the pattern mixing

The pleated plaid skirt outfit I feel looks a bit too hectic and I agree that maybe no white and plain black boots might just take it down a notch.

You are looking better than ever, Fashintern! Coming into your own with your style .... and it's lovely to see.

Pics #1 to #3 (so the shorts outfit) is KLLER to the Power of KILLER. You are ready for NYFW, and have graduated with distinction from pattern mixing class! WOW ! Love the ease with which you are wearing the look! To answer your question - no, the jacket is not too much because it works with the rest of the palette. My eye sees harmony.

#4 to #5 - the boots and heels work. Great '90s bomber!

#6 to #8 - fab skirt! I would prefer to see your black mid calf boots with the look. The ones that were/are at the cobbler..... and with sheer back hosiery to minimize a few of the horizontal lines. I'd also leave off the white T-neck. Add heattech thermals if you're cold. I like the pink plaid scarf with the vibe! Need a solid topper here.

#9 to #10 - super cute! The vest adds effective structure to the oversized flannel funnel neck.

#11 to #12 - KILLER. Rocking that '70s look!

#13 - super cute at home vibe.

You have lots of oldies but goodies, and have styled them well! WELL DONE :)

Count me a fan of the shorts and tights look. I like #4/5 better than 2/3, but maybe try that combo with the floral boots? The plaid jacket + green bag reads Christmas elf to me. To me, that outfit (2/3) falls somewhere in the middle on the "hectic pattern mixing" scale. I want either more or less to make it work. More being a patterned bag on top of everything else, or something over-the-top quirky like a big fur coat/vest or clout goggles or a gigantic scarf.

#11/12 is eccentric and fun, and I think you can pull it off with the right attitude. #6 comes across as quite conservative, despite the boots. #10 and #13 are normal, everyday outfits, great for when you just want to blend in and go about your day.

I like shorts with tights and boots - but the bright green bag does look a bit off in the outfit#2-3. With so much of pattern mixing plain black bag would make more cohesive outfit even with the same strap ( just my take on mixing colors/patterns ).
I like more sporty outfits on you like #9-10 ( love the pose in #10 ) and your Stetson cardigan - at home look.
The outfit in #6-8 needs to be seen with a jacket over it - without the outwear it looks comfy but a bit too retro to my eye.
The pics at home got good light .

My favorites are 6, 7,8 and the last one. The flares look cute, too. The skirt is styled very nicely, I would like to see the cardigan with blue and black jeans to compare which jeans work best with it. I would not comment on pattern mixing and shorts. Both are not the kind of things I appreciate not just in your outfits but in general.

Love all 2-10 + 13! Great tonal outfits- love the burgundy color scheme, the midi plaid skirt and the cascade cardi from the last one! Pattern mix is genial here in nr 2(&7)- I also love the use of white jeans for fall, and of a pastel puffer vest over darker column here! Proportions and fit is great in all so YLF! The 11-12 is not my taste find them a bit too retro for my liking so better rely on what others will say about these two.

You have a lot of winners here! Actually, the only one that doesn’t work to my eye is 1-2, because the shades of red seem too disparate, in addition to the patterns. I think a plaid with a more similar shade of burgundy could work. 6 is my favorite on you, though it is a more dated look. But, your smile communicates happiness and confidence. I like the pattern mix in 12- it might be one of your best attempts at a pattern mix ever. And 13 looks comfy and modern. 4/5 and 9/10, I like, in the sense that they coherently communicate how you like to dress- mixing old with new, practical, pattern. It’s an authentic look.

It took me more than a week to get here, because I don’t always wear something fresh every day. In the end I decided to try doing something with an OBG that’s going away and also show one of the ways I’ve been wearing my “blanket” cardi around the house and to exciting destinations like the grocery store or for a walk around our neighborhood.

2&3 shorts from 10 years ago that seem to have finally found their place in my wardrobe as a fall item with tights. Trying the burgundy tights, as Angie & others suggested. Is the jacket too much? I was excited about that pattern match, but looking at pictures, I think plaid jacket+floral shorts+floral boots+guitar strap= too much. I can loose the purse strap easily, still am not sure about jacket and shorts. Black all-cotton Vince sweater ca 2012, slightly transparent so requires something underneath—new Lascana body suit. Free People bag and no-name guitar strap from Nordstrom’s Rack, both ca 2018

4&5 Same floral shorts, with tall brown boots from 2003. Is this too much heel for the shorts? ASOS top from 2019, LLBean bomber jacket from early 90s, vintage necklace I’ve had since 1988, fluffy mittens bought 3-10 years ago, new Uniqlo Airism tights.

6-8 plaid skirt worn in high school with a black cashmere sweater that these days would be called a crop, pearl necklace, and black patent loafers with a teeny wedge. Now trying red suede boots from a couple years ago, navy wool sweater bought this fall at TKMaxx for DS to wear to school, which I promptly shrank in the laundry, and Mossimo Dutti T-neck from fall 2018. Scarf is mohair, purchased for me in Scotland by my grandma a few years before she died in 1989. I’ve been looking forward to wearing this skirt again, was excited to see Angie’s https://youlookfab.com/2020/10.....idi-skirt/ post about pleated midi skirts on Oct 2, would appreciate any suggestions and tips.

9-10 In the year of pandemic loungewear, a flannel funnel neck seems like more of a thing. Jeans are from 10 years ago, Hollister puffy vest from around 2017. I’m in the elevator at the PT’s office here.

11-12 I had to try! Tongue firmly in cheek here. The Western shirt is from 1997, when I was at a conference in Fort Worth. Red /burgundy/cranberry Bershka flares from 2019, Anthropologie Pilcro trucker jacket 2017. Floral belt from Target. Golden floral Seychelles boots 2018. Put this on for the picture, hope you’re smiling.

13 I’ve worn the Stetson cardi nearly all the ways shown in this post https://youlookfab.com/2020/09.....-cardigan/ since it got here a few weeks ago. I think got it 8-9 years ago, not sure. Black Onzie waffle tank, rose pink NYJD pants from 2018. Stocking feet because I’m home today, but I’ve worn this with a couple pairs of black boots, usually with the pink fleece vest.

Comments, questions, suggestions, and remarks on what works or doesn’t are all appreciated. I’ve made notes of who prefers not to be responded to, particularly not with questions, and will respect that. I’d like us all to enjoy our interaction here and appreciate your insights and encouragement.

Ps. Do all 3 of my 3 photo spots at home—kitchen, porch (plaid skirt) and hallway—work for you? Pix I upload to YLF often appear darker than they did in the photos app on my phone.
