Oh if I had to put money on this, I’d say soft autumn! You have the most wonderful autumn cognac eye colour in these photos.
My husband is ‘diagnosed’ soft autumn, his hair is chocolate brown and skin is creamy white, he looks great if his contrast echoes his hair-skin contrast level. So more contrast than many “internet” guides indicate.
Soft autumn has many wonderful blues, faded rose reds…

Great examples Helena. That’s very similar to what I need and am working on organizing wardrobe around.
One problem I have is I am lured into a certain color that looks good for face color, so, a top or jacket, and also works with a typical neutral pants ( black, charcoal gray, denim) but then don’t mix & match with each other enough to grab & go for say, a travel capsule or to have a more streamlined wardrobe.
Have to work on that more.

@Helena - this post (and the accompanying pics) is a real ‘Aha! regarding your style. Have you ever done a closet audit and made a colour board?

@ Jessikams - I think you are on to something. One of my best colours is a yellow-green-brown, kind of like Dijon, but darker. Like something you would scrape off the bottom of your boot. Not a colour you would gravitate to on the racks…

This is a master class! I was thinking, her complexion is like mine and I don't wear these colors... why do they work on her? And then Angie named it! This is an interesting way that people can choose their favorite colors and make them work. My favorites happen to already be high-contrast and you work high-contrast in with your muted colors. Very cool!

Yes!!! (and high fiving you!-) These colours look amazing on you!! And now I want something in that exact shade of pink as your cardi, and that exact shade of brown as in photo 4!-)

I was nodding along with what Angie wrote:

"I am saying it again: We CANNOT see colours in isolation. They visually affect one another too much.

That’s why it depends enormously on what you wear these colours with,
in which fabrics they are worn, where on the body you wear them, and in
smaller or larger components of the outfit."

So true!! It still surprises me sometimes how two items in the exact same colour aren't equally flattering, just because the fabrics are different etc.

And this cracked me up, Helena!!-)))

ETA on greys -- when my hair was blonde I did not like light grey on me, either. Charcoal, yes (and it's still good) but not the lighter greys. Now I really like the clear light greys and silver BUT I need to include white or navy or some contrast in the outfit for it to work. So a similar principle to yours.

I especially love that first dirty pink on you, Helena. WOW! But Angie's right -- part of the reason it works so well is the contrast with white. Same for the blue top with white jeans, etc.

I think it's also related to personality. By colouring alone, you might be able to wear clearer brights but you prefer the softer tones overall, so mixing them with white or navy/ black gives you the perfect balance you seek.

Yes, Angie, you're definitely right! When I try to do muted with muted, it can easily fall flat. When I do muted with clear (i.e. white, or black, which works better with lighter muted tones on me, I think), it looks and feels much better. Grayed-blue white white, light muted blush with black, etc. seems to be my sweet spot in terms of amount of colour and amount of contrast, but to your point, I've mostly abandoned colour "rules" except as a rough starting point, since as you say, context is everything.

I think this is also why I like a deep gray, which contrasts with my light skin, but not so much a light gray, which just sort of blends and looks blah on me. Interestingly, the grays I like best are not pure grays ... they have a touch of something else (brown, green, purple). It seems to be that I like colours on me best the more hyphens they need in their name

VERY NICE, Helena!

Quick observation - you are wearing many of these muted tones with a crisp, clear, and clean white or cream - which makes a visual difference against your complexion. Your complexion likes high contrast. You did this instinctively, I bet! Even the white sneakers in #13 add a crisp touch - Inge does the same thing when she wears greyed colours.

Hi friends, just a quick share with my "grayed" tones from the past year or so ... especially blues with a touch of gray, but also pinks, beiges, and even a few real grays (I like deep gray on me - not so much light grays). As a presumed soft summer, these are my colours, although the most muted tones do NOT look good on me to my eye ... I'm better veering into the softer side of bright than going too soft ...

I like pairing these colours with black and white, which add crispness or sharpness to keep everything from being too blended.
