It’s interesting traveling between the city/covent garden/Mayfair and Camden

@olive green’s observation about (black) skinnies and docs being a “timeless” look for london is also true about transitioning between geographic regions. The interpretation may be different. More authentic expression of “counterculture” in Camden vs an interpretation/cosplay /culturally adaptation for easier consumption of of london street style. This is also similar to @jaime’s observation about culture informing fashion

I count myself in the latter group so it’s not pejorative. Either way, I felt stylistically appropriate in either setting

Bj1111, interesting! I always dress as conservatively as possible when traveling to other countries, but conservative is a moving target. Your black business wear probably spans the differences nicely.

Wonderful report! "Chinese interpretation of American prep leisure" is such a great description. DH has coworkers in Chengdu... fingers heavily crossed for a business trip someday in the future.

I feel like you could plunk a person in skinnies and Docs down in London at any time during the last forty years or so and they wouldn't look out of place. I suspect each locale has its own "classics"... Lol'ing over the "youngun in Shoreditch".

That is interesting! My husband was just in London and the UK for a couple of weeks (with a few days in the Netherlands too) tour managing our friends’ band. London is a great place for people watching. I always assume I will be rightly identified as a tourist when I’m in another country and don’t take great pains to dress like a local, but I also don’t wish to stand out in a bad way either, LOL! But in the past I have felt pretty at-home in London.

Very interesting observations. I'm not surprised that the cities in China tended to be more conservative in their fashion choices and London has always seemed very fashion forward, if somewhat rebellious in their approach. Always fascinating to hear about other countries current streetstyle.

Great question OG. My wardrobe is mostly black and I travel only carry on. In China it was mostly business so a suit jacket and dresses. I didn’t deliberately change approach, but definitely blended/felt more in tune with londonites.

Recently in Nanjing/chengdu/Kunming (east to west) and london. Very stylish cities. Lots of cash sloshing around in the areas we frequented, locals and tourist alike. More mixing of local social strata (in a way that was evident to an us visitor) in China vs way way more into tourists in london. General observations on street style

Chinese were more put together in a more formal very well pressed way that gave the impression of trying v hard vs london where louche / artfully undone was a style (except in the city where gecko dress code never died)

More skirts/dresses in Chinese cities, longer skirts, more modest vs london were mostly short skirts with dark hose and combat /Chelsea boots were everywhere. I saw a youngun wearing control top hose, a waist length sweater and a coat in shoreditch

Rare pants on women esp under 40s in China, mostly straight vs london where skinnies are back amid the straight legs. Wide legs on the young worn with sneaks, mostly white, or combat/Chelsea’s mostly black. Pants were cropped to show off the boots or covered the shoes almost entirely.

I don’t have a clear recollection of the shoes in China, mostly flats not v fashion forward, v “tasteful” which goes with the overall vibe. Style icon would be Chanel mostly, or a Chinese interpretation of American prepleisure

Hard to tell what is native london street style tho with so many tourists —esp Spanish at the moment—if I had to guess, a bit edgier just by the plethora of docs and doc-like footwear (although docs are relatively mainstream they give an aspirationally edgy vibe)

A few photos
