Unfrumped, a good point about my coloring and the jacket...I am a winter actually (my hair looks red from being bleached by the sun)...so charcoal is not actually my best. Good food for thought when considering how to I should pay for alterations here...gonna think about it more

I think the fit has good possibilities with the waist-definition.
But on a tangent, I'm really scrutinizing my color choices now and I see your lovely strawberry blonde hair and am thinking, is this color "you"? Or is it such a good basic that you will add some other colors with it?
Seeing the lighter jackets in the other posts got me thinking that way, is all.
The vertical striped jacket's tones look really good on you. Not that you would always wear cream or light colors, but it looks like you could really rock some of those tawny, "spring" or "fall" redhead-type colors.

Thanks for confirming that the old one is maybe worth a second look. I am willing to invest and so very happy Diana gave such precise recommendations on what to have done. I will look at it and take it to my seamstress to see if she agrees. I have a favorite tux I am taking in anyway. Thanks for all the help ladies.

By the way, one daughter now has a gorgeous new bike waiting in the garage for her bday in 2 days. Cannot wait for her to get it!

After reading Angie's post on fall jacket trends, I'm wondering if your old grey blazer could fit the oversized look. I know nothing about tailoring but the fit reminds me of what happened back at the time that fashion went from shoulder pads to natural shoulder and we tried removing the pads. You might try your blazer with a small shoulder pad.
I really like the color of the first jacket on you. It looks fabulous from the side especially, but is very different in cut and color from the one you are replacing.

Yes, I liked the leather jacket too. It was a very flattering cut and colour. But you can't go around with a clothes peg on your nose all day so just as well to return it. I'm sure your old jacket could be altered but it's not an inexpensive fix so I guess you'll have to weigh that up.

What a shame about the smell. I like that leather jacket on you. But it is a very different style from your old jacket and not a replacement, I think. So even if you kept it, you'd probably still have wanted one similar to what you have. Diane's ideas for alteration are good ones!

Sorry about the smell! I just bought a leather belt and didn't realize until I had worn it once that it stinks :(

I like your grey blazer! I think it is worth altering if not too expensive while you wait for your perfect jacket to come along.

I agree with you about the jackets in 1-3. 4 was rather nice on you, shame about the smell.
The jacket in 6-7 looks roomy above your bust at the sides by the armhole. When I address a problem like this for my customers I look for the seem that runs down the body from the armhole at the side front. A bit may need taking in down there towards the level of your bust. Also the jacket may need the sleeve re-setting in a bit narrower at the front only in the same area. I usually do the to points at the same time. It does involve taking some of the sleeve out and is a bit time consuming. Not sure how much your local tailor would charge.

Last post from me today...my daughters are waiting patiently to spend their holiday shopping....he he, but for bikes.

As mentioned already I have this list for jackets

1. replacement stripe blazer for old one that was too big and I had tired of
2. replacement grey blazer for one that I feel is too big and not cool enough
3. leopard blazer just because I saw a lady wearing one and thought she looked great.

and this time I wanted to discuss the grey. In my mind I picture a hacking jacket, in a lovely light, silvery wool, with a longer back than front. But after searching now a year I let myself be swayed by the idea of leather. Here are the ones I have tried. let me know if you had a favorite.

The sad truth is that i purchased the one in picture 4 and then spent some time trying to style it, on the same day as the others I posted about. And again, once styled with lots of bottoms, I realized that it was too short and didn't fulfill my need. IN addition, it smelled. It is a leather jacket and I expected the leather smell, but this one gave me a headache just having it in the car on the way home. I tried airing it outside on my covered porch but it still smelled. I returned it, again for more store credit (another typical problem here, hard to return anything.)

But, the up side. While I was going wild trying on all my other jackets I decided to try on my grey blazer that I was trying to replace. And dang I was smitten by the nipped waist, the length and the width of the collar. But it does seem big. Can anyone suggest if I should, or how I should, have it altered so it will fit me better. I think it is actually flattering, do you agree?

Have I learned anything from all this. I wish I could say I had but the truths are small, 1. be careful what you buy on sale 2. don't compromise on what you really want

but the thing I learned about myself was maybe more important...I am no longer willing to keep bad purchases just because they almost work, and despite the very negative attitude about returning anything, I am willing to return now to save myself wasted money and an orphan in my closet. I am pretty happy with that.
