Bijou, thanks so much for the link. I think I will try that trench. The color is lovely, and the menswear collar gives it a fun twist.

Suntiger, I wear layers most of the time, either a cardigan sweater or a blazer, year round, because the indoor temperature is so unpredictable. I like my jackets and coats to be on the loose side to fit layers, and still allow the freedom to move my arms when driving, etc.

KKards, I am laughing at the thought of the trench looking like a bath robe! I need to try it on with some fuzzy slippers! Thanks for the link to the Marks and Spencer trench.

J’Aileen, I am trying to imagine myself in a truly classic tailored trench. I agree that would be the most conventionally flattering for me and fit well with my style. However, I have tried on many, and rejected them because they have not sparked joy.

Angie, thanks for chiming in! I’m glad you like my new glasses, and blazers. Thanks for the encouragement about my hair as well. The sky blue LR trench is sold out in XS but comes in tan. The sky blue gingham attracted me to this trench because it reminds me of a happy childhood memory. Something about it sparks joy in a way that conventionally flattering trenches do not. My style adjectives for 2019 are soft, fresh, sleek, practical and light. It seems the trench possibly fails because it is not sleek. For this trench to be practical the style would need to work for at least 6-8+ years without looking dated. I assume that something fashion forward is trendy as opposed to avant-garde, and would not stand the test of time. I am tempted to have my tailor look to see if there is a way to improve the “sleekness” of the fit.

Bonnie, and Cee, thanks for the feedback!

cjh, I have a double breasted Rag and Bone gilet from a two seasons ago, and it’s gorgeous. I feel great when I wear it, but so far when sleeves are added to the mix the fit becomes wonky!

lisa p, thanks for your honesty. I adore Angie. She has so many positive qualities including being supportive, kind, and knowledgeable. Your feedback helps add to the richness of my understanding, and when people have a different opinion from Angie, I often learn more than when everyone is in agreement.

I love new blazers #5 and #7! Fit, style and color all look perfect on you! Trench is a beautiful color but too big to my eye. Agree that you have come this far with your hair and you should get to the goal before deciding your next move!

Your new blazers are terrific - you wear them really well. I wish I had something more positive to say about the trench, but it's totally wearing you, and not the other way around. Way, way too big for your delicate frame. I see now that Angie has noted it as a fashion-forward look....so maybe my eye is ill-informed here.

I think the scarf helps the neckline, but something more tailored might be even better. The double breasted closings often allow for buttoning the lapels closed, so the coat is either snuggled up or open at the neckline for warmer days. I think you would look great in a traditional double breasted style, like the one kkards shows.

I think that beside maybe the too big size, it is also the piping that is giving a bigger effect. Like a drawing with thicker lines. Also the sleeves are very wide.
It is a pity because the color is lovely and you can wear such a coat on your slender frame. Try double breasted yes. It could be that the neckline is a bit higher then.
Love how you look in the blazers.

Staysfit, LOVELY to see you again. You're growing out your hair and it's a beautiful colour. Persevere! You are almost through that awkward stage. I think you will enjoy the change.

Try sizing down in the LR trench, and see what happens. Compare both sizes. This is an oversized fashion forward cut and you wear it well. Totally chic and fabulous - especially in #9.

LOVE the new longer blazers. KILLER x3. Like the fun new specs too.

The blue trench is lovely color for you, but the style and fit don’t seem right. I’m sorry sleeves are usually too short for you. Eons ago when I was slender, sleeves were too short. Now that I’m chubby, sleeves are too long. The style doesn’t strike me as you, either. I think a very traditional and tailored trench seems more you. I had a similar color blue trench years ago, and I loved it. So good luck. I like your hair, too.

I like the blazers in 5 and 7 the most! The color of the first trench is great, but I think it's piping mainly that makes it look big. If you'd normally be layering under, than the size seems ok. One of my trenches is the same-too big without layers, but ok with. I think they're tricky, because they're only needed for a short, but variable, time of year.

Unfrumped, I have tried to find another trench this color, but they are either sold out, made of denim, or larger looking and less tailored than this one! Ugh!

Bijou, is there a link to the Kate Spade trench? I tried to find it online but could not and there are no local stores that carry that line.

Katerina, thanks for your complements about the blazers, I appreciate your positive judgment since your ability to pick beautiful tailored pieces is impeccable.

Jane, thanks for mentioning the piping! It is not a typical detail for my style. I believe gingham is classic, and this particular gingham, sky blue and white, reminded me of the fabric my mother used to make twin outfits for us when I was a child, We both had a sky blue and white gingham maxi skirt and coordinating top.

Rachy, thanks for chiming in, your opinion means a lot to me!

JenniNZ, thanks for the complements on my hair and specs. Pic 7 is the Armani. My cell phone selfie may not be that clear, but it is a grey herringbone wool blazer. It doesn’t look oversized in comparison to the other blazers, but it is still a tad oversized. The other three are very oversized which seems to be a more current style. At some point, I will try to post my fitted Max Mara and Hugo Boss blazers for comparison so you can see the difference,

Mainelady, the sky blue gingham attracted me for sentimental reasons, as is the case for much of what I wear. I used to wear blazers a lot when I was younger. My mom made me wear them when I was in middle and high school so I shied away from them, but I find that I like them again.

I am not sure what style trench to look for? Should I go tailored and classic? Single or Double breasted? Avant-garde? I looked for the violet trench suggested by Bijou but could only find a long light tan and a short black trench on the Kate Spade website, and there are no stores in my community. I tried on a double breasted blazer made by Theory when I was at Nordies in April, and it looked amazing. I didn’t purchase it because the color was too bright for work, but I might get it if it goes on sale. It made me think that I could possibly wear something double breasted. My style seems to be moving towards a more tailored and sleek look, although I am not a fan of buttoned tops.

The color of the trench is beautiful on you. I like the sneak peek of gingham on the sides. I agree with the others that you may need to size down.

Sorry I think blue trench too big. I like the blazers. Is the Armani pic 7? It doesn’t look that grey and I can’t see herringbone, but it’s the only one that doesn’t look oversized.

Staysfit, I love your new blazers! The dark blue is pure poetry. You wear the longer styles so well. And I also like the Armani a lot, even if not as “trendy” as the new ones, it is such a gorgeous classic and you look fantastic in it.
The blue trench coat is drowning you a little, too much fabric I think. The colour is lovely on you, but I am not sure of the style. I am with Bijou here - something more tailored.
The glasses are great.
I like the longer hair, agree with your stylist on trying it for a while and see.

Staysfit, this trench is a beautiful colour, but I don’t think the cut is good on you. Just too much fabric. I saw a beautiful light violet trench by Kate Spade that looks sleeker and more tailored. It is currently on sale. It may be worth having a look at as the colour is gorgeous.

CJH, I agree with you about the wide open neckline. I do best with a high neckline. A scarf might help. I may have one that would work. I think the belt is supposed to be that long. The holes are designed so it hangs long like that. I think it emphasizes the gingham in contrast to the rest of the coat, but it is a bit silly and maybe sloppy.

Runcarla, I will look for the XS to see if it is still available, maybe it would look better in the smaller size. Thanks for the encouragement about my hair. At this length it becomes a frizzy mess when it’s humid. Since my hair is thick, I have layers cut into the back and sides that we have been slowly eliminating. It is taking a long time to grow them out!

I also love the trench color bug think it’s too big overall.

The colour of this trench is wonderful for you, but my gosh it looks too big. Shoulders and arm length don't look like they will be a problem, since it looks like the are dolman style. Can you model a smaller size? I second your stylists suggestions to tough out the grow out. I'm liking the longer/fuller hair.

The blue trench is a great color. To my eye, it’s biggest detractor (being a coat) is the wide open neck, maybe fixable by wearing a scarf neatly inside. It doesn’t look as sophisticated as I’d think of as “you”, maybe because of the gingham trim and big round pockets. And honestly it does look a bit big. Is it the style to have a belt so long?

One of my 2019 shopping goal is to find new trench coats. I want a color from my palette and long enough sleeves. (I love the look of Burberry but their sleeves run too short.)

How is this sky blue Lela Rose trench? I liked it initially but now I think it may be too much. As I look at the pictures, all I see is how large it looks. Is it too overwhelming for me? Are the lapels too wide? What about the gingham panels? Can this work with my style? Will this trench stand the test of time? This is the size small, and worry the XS would not be properly proportioned for my height. The belt on this hits in the right place. Maybe it can be altered in some way to make it sleeker?
ETA: I added a pic at the end where I am wearing a blazer over my tee, plus a scarf to fill in the neckline. Does that make enough of a difference? I am most likely to wear this with layers.

My spring/summer refresh consists mostly of oversized blazers. I am not fond of the frilly ruffles on dresses this season. Longer blazers have attracted my attention because they look sleek and polished to my eye. I was thrilled to find some with long enough sleeves. Two are from Lafayette 148NY. The dark navy blazer is from Rosie Assoulin's new clothing line By Any Other Name. The fit is great and its beautifully made.

I wore an Armani blazer to work today, (grey herringbone) and it's easy to see the oversized cut of the newer blazers in comparison.

The last picture is an iridescent trench which I'm returning. It looks white, but it has pink iridescence. The sleeves are too short, the belt hits in the wrong place, and I think it looks ridiculous. It's basically a surreal lab coat.

The dark grey glasses frames are new. I still have my turquoise, red and clear plastic frames as well.

I just had my hair trimmed yesterday and my stylist suggested that I try to endure this awkward phase for a few more weeks before deciding whether to cut it short again.
