Yes, cat2, it was! I had two sweaters on repeat, so I could afford to wait until next spring if necessary.

I do sometimes pay full price for pants, as those are hard to fit, and I am really fussy about cut, fabric, color, pattern, etc. Most of the rest of my wardrobe is good quality product bought on sale just like you have done with this sweater. I doubt you desperately needed it, so waiting a bit was fine?

Bijou and delurked: And yes, hard-to-fit items (on us) is a great reason to buy full-price!

Suz, Bijou, and Carol:

I agree that being purposeful, patient, and picky is easier when you already have a functioning wardrobe. For a while, there was a lot of talk on the forum about “placeholders” among those of us still building our wardrobes. When you have a serious need for a special occasion or just shoes that don`t hurt, you have a serious need and may wind up buying. a just OK item to get you through.

Conversely, if you can wait for the perfect item to come along—or for an item you would like but can temporarily do without—you can be far more discriminating.

Suz: Yes, Me&Em has drool-worthy goods. I find their ad slogan of “intelligent Style” to be true!

Column, I try to be purposeful with all of my purchases. I tend to buy on sale:
- basics - such as underwear and exercise gear where I am replacing worn out items and know the product;
- items that I know will be an easy fit on me;
- luxury items that I could not afford to pay full price, but was lucky enough to find, either through buying online or from a consignment/thrift store. These are usually my 'wildcard' wardrobe items.

When it comes to hard to fit (on me) items, such as shoes, swimwear and jeans, I generally pay full price and will splurge to get it perfectly fitting and exactly what I want.

Okay, now you have got me drooling over the cord A-line midi skirt in blue at Me & Em. Which is way over my price point!

Your point is so well taken, though. Sometimes it is more than worth it to pay full price, even if the price is high -- and sometimes if you wait, a deal will be yours. I find this works best with replacements of things I already own and love.

I am still working on buying purposeful stuff, and not random sale stuff. But since I don't buy much at all, I usually end up using most of it.

I love a cotton sweater. I also like to get a good deal on things I already want, but sometimes things are definitely worth paying full price for. Patience is helpful for getting the sales, but the potential becomes high on your size/color then being sold out.

I'm a day behind, but to Angie's point about only buying sale items when you know they are quality: I've been watching cotton sweaters since the spring, when they were priced higher than I was willing to pay. I bought from Brooks Brothers last year a cable cotton sweater in a soft orange-pink stripe that looked in silhouette much like Angie's RL.

Well, BB is on sale again in just a few colors and sizes. I have an order coming, and it's a fair price--almost half the original. Just a heads-up for anyone else interested:

https://www.brooksbrothers.com.....ar_WY00928

That said, I did buy Me&Em cream leather fisherman sandals last summer at full price, which is no small number if you know the brand's shoe pricing. I'm delighted to have the shoes. I wear them constantly, with shorts and work dresses, especially now that bunions have developed seemingly overnight (Aging is so much fun!). I'm through my second year with them and they are hardy--good as new for next year. So there's a story of purposefully stalking a sale and buying full price when the pickin's are good!
