No reason to embrace a look that you find unflattering to your body or eye. And no reason to apologize :). There are sooooo many trends and looks out there. I have jeans now from skinny (not skin tight skinny though) to boot cut to trouser and really am liking my straight legs. It seems to be all appropriate and none of them "out of date".
The only variation on a slouchy that I have worn is some jeans that are fitting looser with some weight loss. And some that seem to have "too stretchy throughout the day" issues. I don't like the second variation much and am trying to replace those!

Janet, I will join you on the bench. My butt is flat and droopy as it is, and my legs are quite short so there is no point in making me look like I am walking on my knees while wearing a diaper! I am also avoiding skinnies (if I can get my fat legs all the way in) because they just make me look like a stuffed sausage or a stuffed sausage in boots, so I guess I am quite an anomaly. I do love my straight leg jeans, however, and some fit me more like skinnies do on other people.

I am pushing 60, growing out my hair, and letting it go gray. I have sloping shoulders and body parts are heading south. I feel that an over-sized and/or slouchy look on short me could easily go beyond sloppy and make me look like some type of crazy homeless lady. I shouldn't ever say never, but I recognize that I could easily look like a fashion victim or worse!

I am another non slouchy pants person.
There are many trends that I pass easily.
I think when you get to be my age, you know what works best for your body- type.
I do not like the look much, have seen it work on long-legged women but most styles work on them.
And all styles seem to work on Angie.
Janet, you always look great to me!

I'm so glad you started this thread Janet. It has been interesting to read where everyone stands. I know I've felt left out of certain trends here or I've been embarrassed to admit what I really want to look like because I know someone else has a "poison eye" for something I like. While I'm relieved that I don't have to wear skinnies so tight that they hurt to get the *proper* fit anymore, I won't be going super-sized either. My slouchy looks probably won't have the intention that most people want to see, but I have to be okay with that. DH and I both prefer a more classic fit/look, so all of my outfits will probably err on that side.

You have terrific style, and what's more, you already know where you want to go on your style journey. Like Shannon, you could never, never become passe or boring, so put that fear out of your head! Often the greatest style icons became famous because of the restraint they showed and the bad looks of their time that they refused to wear.

I have recently come to the conclusion that I look best in more tailored or body-con styles, which seems counter-intuitive to me. In theory I would think that a loose, relaxed fit would be the opposite of too tight and therefore give me the appearance of being smaller. However, loose styles just don't hang right on my body, especially not trousers or jeans. Even a-line skirts make me look many sizes larger than I really am, and full skirts look positively gigantic. So I have put all such items on the "purge" pile, and I will stick to shapes that skim the body, at least to the knee.

Janet, I am on your team:) I have two pairs of what I call slouchy pants. They are slouchy in the leg area but not really anywhere else and that works for me. I am not super slim so too slouchy just adds excess fabric, creating bulk, in places that I don't need it. I did go and try some 'sized up' skinnies and laughed so hard at myself in the mirror that I just moved on from that idea very quickly. I really think we live in a time where anything goes and so if a trend doesn't work for you, just smile and wave as you let it pass you by.

It is all about adopting what seems right to you as has been said above. There is never just one trend going, and it is always possible to adopt something trendy if you want, but there is no reason someone should wear slouchy jeans or anything else they don't like in principle or on themselves.

Hi Janet --

I think you'll have plenty of company in skipping this trend, but as you do like to try new things I can see why you're a little conflicted about missing out!

I'm a big fan of traditional trousers with a skimming thigh fit -- I wore them when they were out and skinny was in, and I'm still wearing them now.

That's about as far as I want to go with "slouch," however, unless I can find a pair that puts the butt somewhere near mine.

As I'm straight-hipped I do like some of the styles I see with more draping around the hips and a narrow leg -- kind of the pants version of a pencil skirt -- but with shorter legs and SpongeBobSquareButt tendencies I can't deal with a dropped rear view.

I will say that some of my loungewear features this silhouette and I admit it's incredibly comfortable! Hope all the adopters of this trend are thrilled with the look and feel.

As a pretty pear, I thought I was going to hate this look and that the slouchy pants would make my bottom half even bigger. I was surprised to find that I really like this look. I now own two pairs of these "new silhouette" pants. (I don't know if they are particularly slouchy, but they are definitely new for me, and look trendy to my eye). I try to wear them with high wedges when I can to balance the proportions a little bit and with half-tucked, loose, roomy blouses on top. I really like the somewhat masculine silhouette. I am not quite as minimalist as Angie, yet. I prefer to supplement my masculine looks with pretty statement necklaces, particularly bibs and studded collars.

ETA: I wanted to add that this trend came up at a really fortunate time for me. As I started teaching this semester, I found myself spending a lot of time in front of a roomful of undergrads and I felt very conscious in my skinny jeans, so they were a no-go. While I still wear my dresses and some pencil skirts, they don't feel as hip and trendy as trousers - this is a trouser season after all. So I had the right motivation, and a good selection of trousers to choose from that allowed e to give trend a try. I am very glad I did. I don't think they are the most flattering thing on me, but I still feel fab in them. So maybe your eye needs to adjust.

IronKurtin, interesting comment! I think those Marni for C/E jeans I sent you would fall into the "non-traditionally flattering" camp to a degree (with the dropped crotch and cropped length) - for some reason I thought this sort of thing was more your look!

As long as you wear what you do with confidence you are fab Janet! Exploration is great and so is knowing what you feel good wearing.

I don't think the slouchy baggy look is particularly flattering on me, but I wear it with aplomb. And given feedback from my BF (and random guys hitting on me haha ) I'm guessing this figure unflattering look works for me

Janet, you are so gorgeous in what you do wear, there is no reason to embrace a trend that doesn't suit you! I have learned that lesson over and over.

I am Team Slouchy because a) I have a terrible rear view anyway, b) it balances my IT shape, and c) it somehow makes me feel tougher and also, confusingly, thinner. It has always been my look (back in the early 90s my friends accused me of dressing like a boy skateboarder) and I will love it long after it's gone out of style.

You don't need to wear this trend to be the artist rocker chick that you are!

AMEN sister! i think the only pants that i've liked that were only remotely slouchy were the crossover crotch pants that denise had...and then only in the 25s.

wearing straights today instead of super skinnies. that will have to do. on the other hand, i'm totally into the oversized sweaters (as long as the shoulder fits...not doing the 80's again.)

I love this look on others. I am sitting it out, though, at least for now. Like the OP, I feel dumpy and frumpy when I try it. If I find the perfect slouchy sweater I'll be all over that, but slouchy pants don't fit with my perception of what looks good on my hourglass body. By "good" I don't necessarily mean "figure-flattering", but stylish and most of all INTENTIONAL. The "intentional" part is the one I find the trickiest to achieve with this look. I love slouchy pants outfits that look intentional. They don't all come off that way to MY eye, though. For a slouchy pants outfit to work for me, there are a bunch of boxes that need to be ticked, and some of them are not personally achievable due to lifestyle, body type, and lack of corresponding wardrobe items.

A couple of points:
- I tend to buy pants that are designed to be slouchy rather than regular pants a few sizes too big. That creates a more flattering silhouette on me. Then I will actually size down. There is no way I wear a size 25 skinny jean; my size is mostly 27. But in this style, I have gone down to 25 twice to get a less overwhelming look on short me.
- It is taking quite a bit of courage for me to wear this look. Knowing that other stylish women on this forum (like Ironkurtin) think this look is "terribly unflattering" takes confidence and conviction. But this is where I want to be on my style journey, experimenting with modern silhouettes.

Janet, your feelings are perfectly valid. It's not just the "slouchy boyfriend jeans" look that has hits and misses. There are lots of looks I see on the forum that only work for some people, in some circumstances. Certain styles work better for certain bodies, and body shape aside, people have different preferences.

Style is a personal benchmark, that transcends trendiness, to me. Style is what allows you to pick from what's available. There is no need to reinvent yourself every time either, Janet. Look at all of the style icons of the century, they are somewhat predictable. Predictable is good, really good.

I am in the same camp. I do still want a looser BF cut, but in the way Denise wears them, just with some ease, not falling down loose. That is why I returned the TR Cameron's this summer that got thumbs up. I was up about 4 pounds and they were borderline too loose at that weight. I just knew it wouldn't be the fit I wanted and my butt would be flapping in the wind ha ha.
I think it's human nature to join the crowd and I see it happen often here. Don't feel bad about sitting it out. Embrace the independent streak - that's pretty rock n roll, isn't it?

I have always leaned towards a looser fit and happen to like slouchy if done right. I think this trend is a backlash to the extreme tightness of jeans (not just skinnys) that just keep getting tighter. I predict in the end most ladies will go to a happy medium- not too tight, not too loose.

Thank you for this thread, Janet! I have not "gotten" the slouchy/baggy jeans look at all. I like the slouch in wide-legged pants (Katharine Hepburn style) but the oversized skinnies look reminds be too much of what adolescent boys were wearing in the 90s. I also have an hourglass figure and surrendering the waist and adding bagginess and bulk turns me into a thick column -- no thanks! Rectangles and ITs seem to be able to strut a lot of styles that just don't work for me.

Part of my style statement is to not wear items that I feel will be a particular "oh, no" when in the future I look at old photos. And in hindsight I knew some of my "mistakes" even at the time I was wearing them, and these are always in the pants categories -- I don't cringe at changing jackets, tops and shoulder lines.

I love my baggy pants, but I'll be the first one to admit that they are "butt surrendering." Not the pants to wear when you want to show off the rear view, just as loose tunics are waist surrendering and won't show off a slim waist. No reason to wear either look if one doesn't like them.

Janet, you are honing your style beautifully. Stick with your strategy.

Sveta, you embraced this trend with a similar body type to Janet. I love it!

I can completely relate to this. I feel far more confident in pants that are tailored to my shape. I believe it must be a function of my body shape overall. To my eye, I look best in skinny jeans. I even have a difficult time with bootcuts, though I do enjoy a good pair of straight legs. Trousers as well, I prefer them on the sleek side.

However I do enjoy the slouchy look on others, as well as fashion forward slouchy pants. For me I don't think it is possible to achieve merely by going up a size or three. I've tried this on numerous occasions and I just look like I'm wearing ill-fitting pants. Flashbacks to the post-baby weight loss process when ill-fitting pants seemed to be the norm for me. It must be my shape, because I've seen many people do this successfully.

The only time I've been remotely successful is with pants that are intentionally shaped like this in my size. And even then, there is quite a bit of trial and error.

Janet, you've expressed EXACTLY the thoughts that have been going through my mind these past few months as I've watched forum members jump on the slouchy bandwagon. While I know Angie emphasizes not to jump on a trend if it makes you feel unfab, sitting on the sidelines can feel a bit like being in fashion Siberia.

What makes this slouchy trend so difficult to sit out is that I actually am quite happy to wave goodbye to shrunken tops and super skinny pants. I like having more ease in my clothes but that feeling doesn't extend to having a saggy butt or having to push up the sleeves of my sweater to find my hands. As an older woman, I need my trends with a dose of sophistication so the Team Just-A-Bit-Slouchy bench is where I want to sit.

This is reassuring. :-)

I think I've been feeling a bit of pressure (self-imposed, of course) to embrace some new silhouettes as I explore the edgier side of my style. I am the artist rock'n'roll chick, after all. So I really try to keep an open mind to what's coming down the pike and embrace emerging styles. But I don't need to embrace *all* of them!

I guess that's part of what makes "style" -- being selective about what trends you embrace and making them your own. I get tempted by the "new and fresh" bandwagon, but I'm learning that I'm much happier many times to not jump on.

What can I say - I LOVE slouchy trouser trend! I really surprised myself by liking it. As you Janet I have small waist and curvy hips and thighs but I find this style flattering on me. Maybe I am kidding myself here...Mind you, I did not embrace very baggy and droopy styles and I don't like them on others either but I like slight slouch a lot if it is styled right.
I am still wearing my skinnies but slouchy pairs I have are becoming my favorites very fast.

Janet, I'm with you, too! Thanks for posting this. I was starting to feel left out and didn't realize it until I noticed that I really wanted to respond to your post. For me, slouchy pants reminds me of my days when I wanted to "hide" in ill-fitting clothes. I have to be really careful with oversized anything so as not to feel overwhelmed. YLF has really helped me to see the beauty of surrendering the waist. I am also enjoying dolman sleeved tops. But I have to be careful with oversized in general and with pants, I find I like the slouchy look in front, but not in back. I feel dumpy and unfab.
