Oh Tara that is horrible... and something I've repeatedly experienced as well...

I actually think our FN staff are pretty hard work here too (its fairly new here though) - they seem to be very pushy - always getting in front of you to tell you about the sales (because I can't see the ENORMOUS sign that says XX% off!), or the new stock or whatever... I usually only go in there to browse now when I have the girls and use them needing to go to the toilet or something as an escape clause LOL.

Returns here are just so different to the way it sounds in the US - very few people do it, and those I know that do, often report that they feel like they are "in trouble" with the stores...

I had one dress fall apart after the first wash, but because I didn't wear it for 3 mths after purchase, the store wouldn't do anything, they sent it to the designer and they too refused to do anything... and for a $140 dress I was very unimpressed and have not even set foot near that store again.

That does sound really obnoxious. As if it is your fault that they are selling something of bad quality!

We get very spoiled with customer service in the US. Sorry, Tara. That doesn't make returning things any easier.

YEP! Agreed. Good service is something that can never be replaced, bad service is always what you remember. I bet your not that keen on getting more from that store now.

Where I work we have learned that *happily* accepting returns is actually very good for business. People usually buy something else once they're in the store, or at least feel more comfortable spending more freely in the first place knowing they can return it. Sounds like some of the shops there haven't quite learned that lesson...

The more I shop in Australia, the more I think service here *REALLY* stinks. Seriously, seriously stinks.

I just purchased a scarf as a gift from a fairly known retail chain here in Australia, Forever New. I usually like their merchandise, it's fashion-forward and not too expensive (not cheap, mind you!)

Upon removing the scarf from the bag to take another look at it over lunch, I noticed some threads had already started to pull - and I had barely touched it! I decided to return it.

At this stage I had the full intention of purchasing another gift from there. I had seen quite a few other things I liked.

I went to the counter and was met by the girl who served me the first time. I told her my problem. She glanced at the pulled threads and said "Oh, that's fine. We have some new ones out the back so I'll just go grab you one" (without asking me if that's what I wanted).
Me: "Actually, I think I might return it instead."
Here: "Oh...fine".
Me (explaining): "It's just I've bought it as a gift and I'm afraid it might happen again with another one".
Her (off-handedly without looking at me): "Well, we've had this style in for 4 years and never had a problem. And of course, as it's cotton you always need to be a bit careful." (Me thinking...Umm...what? And also, I've barely touched it!)
Me: "Oh...oh well. Can I get a refund?"
Her: "Sure. Fine."

She did not make eye contact with me for the rest of the transaction. She became "all business" and shoved the return receipt across to me to sign. She snappily informed me "There you go, it should be back on your card now" before rudely turning away to serve someone else.

I said "Thanks. Sorry about that!"
Her: "That's fine."

As I walked away I thought, why on earth am I apologising? She was rude to me!
I resolved on the spot never to shop there again.

I get this kind of experience all. the. time.
