Thank you everyone. I may have to look that book up.

Like you Ele, my hair isn't as curly as it used to be. Some parts are curly, some wavy, some bendy...I appreciate that it probably isn't an easy job for a hairdresser!

April! 18 years! Now that is loyalty and sounds like someone to hold onto. We move too often for me to hold onto anyone for more than a few years, but there is always the hope that the next city will hold the stylist who can give me a good cut!

Chiming in!

Tansie, I feel your pain because I've had my share of bad haircuts from stylists who don't know curly hair. I agree that it's a skill and finding a stylist who really understands can be tricky. My own hair isn't as curly as it used to be and doesn't actually "shrink" all that much, but it still falls completely differently from straight hair.

In my experience, finding a stylist you like comes down to research. Don't be afraid to go into salons and ask if anyone there is particularly good at curly hair. Don't let them tell you "we're all trained in that", actually talk to a stylist if you can. You could even try asking random women with good hair (if it's a similar length/texture to yours) where they go. I saw a woman on my train the other day (got on at my stop, too) with awesome hair, and am really regretting not asking her where she got it cut.

Oh, and I second April on the Curly Girl book. GREAT info about caring for curly hair!

Tansie, I can *so* relate to your difficulties. I have kept the same stylist for 18 years (!) because she understands curly hair pretty well, even though she is in a location inconvenient enough that I don't go nearly as often as I should.

Have you seen the book Curly Girl? http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Gi.....038;sr=8-1 I found a lot of the suggestions quite helpful -- "stop using shampoo" was my biggest revelation. The author definitely echoes Taylor's advice to cut curly hair dry, though in my experience very few stylists will do that.

Maybe Ele will chime in, since she has been to the Deva Chan salon in NYC, which is owned by the Curly Girl author and specializes in curly hair.

Oh Tansie, soooo sorry you are getting bad cuts. :(

Beauty school teaches the basics...experience is the real teacher. Something to remember is that curly hair shrinks 1-3 inches.....something for you to keep in mind AND remind your stylist. * This is a good example of how dry cutting can work best.*

When you find a style you like , bring a photo with you, but remind the stylist "This is the finished length" allowing for several inches of shrinkage. Hope that helps:)

Hi Taylor. I have had yet another bad haircut and I was just wondering... In hairdressing school do people get taught how to cut wavy/curly hair? So many hairdresses cut my hair as if were straight and it just does NOT work. What's the deal? Ggrrrrr! (although not at you Taylor!)
