Like Suntiger, I'd like to see fashion shows beyond Europe/the US. I know there are "African" shows at Paris and London fashion weeks, but that's clearly filtered through the European lens. There is so much happening in other parts of the world, it'd be great to get a glimpse into it as well. Kenya produces so much clothing--surely there is something there? And Senegal, or Lagos? What about Jo'berg? I bet you can find them in the different parts of the continent, and summarize them for readers, Angie!

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, most recently in a thread about holiday packing, I definitely have certain clothes with a certain look that are largely reserved for the affordable Carribean resort vacations I take (rarely). And have observed other guests in those resorts also dress in a way they probably wouldn’t at home in the summer. Typical Canadian cottage gear is just different from resort wear and people who wear the former at the resorts stand out to me. I have a friend who isn’t even very fashion conscious at home who also reserves sundresses etc just for her yearly Cuba trips (Cuban resorts are NOT high end).
I’m not financially in the target market for most ‘resort’ collections, so most of my stuff is perhaps offtrend, but pretty and bright, summer stuff from affordable brands. Stuff that feels ‘classic’ at the beach but off at home in the big city. But if I was going on a very special trip or something work-related (sometimes sales retreats or employee award events are held down south), I would probably go shopping at a department store hoping for a nice new piece or two.

I have seen that broad trends seen at fashion week do trickle down over the next year or two. It is not the clothes themselves but the ideas, which exert their influence. I believe resort collections are less expensive (but still way out of my budget).

I'm sometimes disappointed in fashion week "trends.". If I see a style/silhouette trend that I really like, it can take a couple of years to trickle down to my affordability level, and sometimes doesn't at all.

But usually some bits and pieces, with time, become accessible or recreatable to the average person like me. Fortunately (unfortunately for my wallet), I always seem to find something I'm pleasantly surprised by, or that strikes my fancy.

So I think your idea of watching street style is good - see what people are actually doing, and not what the industry hopes will catch on.

With time and age, I find I'm just going for what I like, trendy or not.

I often see people in resort wear. Most of the time, actually. It might be influenced by where I work (cruise port), but also in one episode of the early seasons of Project Runway Michael Kors said the resort collection usually was very succesful in the stores.

Hi Sterling and Rachylou, in QLD in Australia resort wear is the absolute norm. I love it Here’s a link to a label, although NZ based pretty much epitomize the look of coastal Queensland: http://www.augustine.co.nz/

I don’t know. I did a walk through Target today and I swear things from two years ago are just trickling in. When I see Spring in Fall, I want to do spring in fall. It’s a problem.

The thing about resort wear... it’s basically summer stuff in the middle of winter. If you go somewhere warm like that... well, none of the stuff looks quite as exciting. You’re vacationing somewhere and somehow it all just becomes shorts, sneakers, a peasant top and a basket purse...

If I understand correctly, February and March have the fashion weeks for F/W and September/October have the fashion weeks for S/S. Somewhere hidden is 'resort'. So, which shows are more likely to actually influence what is in the stores and what people will wear in the coming season?

I'm thinking the street styling in February and March 2018 might factor in on what will be trendy for the S/S 2018. Or, should I be studying what was shown at the S/S shows in September and October 2017?

I'm hoping Angie, Inge, and those in the biz will post what they think/know.
