I like the small size too; but I think for me it's because I don't like shoes to be too wide.

I just accept that my flats need to be a half size larger than heels :)

(Also high arches, and high instep.)

I've looked for information about this. Why some of us have shrinking/expanding feet and am coming up empty. The only thing I could find was about feet in regards to running shoes and it wasn't very helpful. Anybody have any clues about books, blogs etc, that may address these issues? I'm thinking it could help lots of us when selecting shoes to know more about this.

I'm actually often just the opposite. I usually take the larger size in heels, and smaller in flats (especially sandals)

I wear the same size in flats and heels, but the high arch explanation does make sense. Curious to hear more about this.

Funny - Aida and I were just talking about this yesterday! If it helps, I have the same issue. And Elly's makes sense as to why.

Yep--- this is typical for me but I also have extremely high arches. Actually, I have some shoes that are 1.5 sizes smaller than my normal.

In heels your arches don't act as springs to absorb shock and therefore don't have to have room to expand and contract like they do when walking in flats.

I have found that heels fit my feet best if they are a half size smaller than the size I wear in flat shoes. For what it's worth I do have a very high arch, maybe that makes a difference? Does anyone else find this to be true for them or am I just a mutant?
