I clean first with a suede brush for suede or damp cloth for leather. Then I spray. I never wear suede or leather boots in the rain. I wear rain boots or Sorels.

I use Meltonian spray. I just purchased two bottles on Amazon for my annual fall preparation. I'm working on CME at home today, so during my breaks, I will work on my shoes.

I use the spray on both suede and leather and find that it looks the same color when dry. Suede I brush lightly first. Leather I usually give a good brush, polish, and brush again. A thick paste polish can do a good job to help waterproof if left to soak into the leather. Spray. Let dry over night.

I spray everything and wear it in all weather (except suede in April when slush puddles are calf-high!). I brush off my suede boots regularly and spray them every few wears. Leather I do at the beginning and end of the season. I use conditioning leather wipes too (the kind you use on furniture) and sometimes shoe polish oil (mink oil? Hopefully not made with minks!).

I actually just prepped all my boots and booties for Winter. I have one pair of sued booties and a pair of suede slip on almost clog like things that I wear around the house or in the yard.

I use a swiffer rag to remove all the dust and dirt from my leather. If the dirt or sand is a bit more "attached" , I just use a moistened, soft fabric cloth. In really bad cases, u can use saddle soap. Though I have only needed that a couple of times. Then I spray waterproofing in the garage with the doors open. I don't soak. EVER. Just a light spray and I do the edges that meet with the sole too. I let dry for about an hour and do a second spray. Sometimes three for the boots I use in worse weather. However, in massive down pours, I use rubber boots OR a leather waterproof pair that I have. These "waterproofing" treatments are very helpful but they don't make it completely waterproof because the boots are built to prevent water seepage : like around the seams.

As for the suede, I use a soft brush with nothing on it to brush it and lift the dirt and then shake it off. I also use a suede spray that cleans, restores the nap, waterproofs it and brightens up the black. There is a ton of stuff on Amazon.

Happy winter ! : )

I live where it rains and snows. I definitely clean first or at least brush them if they are suede. Spray evenly and until evenly damp all over, not soaked. Let dry overnight. I repeat every month if I wear frequently because we have a lot of weather. Otherwise, only once a season for infrequently used items. I should add that I tend to spray the tops and seams twice. They usually look dry by the time I have gone around the shoe once, so I repeat those areas. I think they are more vulnerable.

Regarding suede booties, I usually do not clean first, unless they have actual dirt on them. Then I spray evenly, not dripping wet, but enough to get complete coverage. Than I let them dry overnight. As far as how often, I guess that would depend on how much exposure to rain they get, I live in a dry climate. I'm sure everyone has their own routine!

I haven't worn them when it rained because I'm afraid I'll ruin them when I spray them. The booties are suede and the boots are leather. And it's raining again, so it is time to bite the bullet.

1. Do I need to clean them first?
If so, how and with what?
2. How much do I spray? Do I saturate them? I have whatever spray Nordstrom sells.

And after I spray them, how often do I need to spray them? It rains here, but doesn't snow, and I'm not out in the rain that much.

Thanks for the help.
