It is not quite a classic color, and might or might not be on-trend from year to year but I absolutely love it, it goes with a lot, and I can't imagine every parting with it. I do need an outerwear wardrobe for four seasons, which I think you said you do not, so makes sense for me. It works very well with most colors but especially with berry tones if you wear them. My favorite trench is bright Barbie pink. But I think it would be a bit more versatile if it were knee length. At hip length it's not going to be entirely effective as a rain coat and you will also have to pay more attention to what you are wearing underneath. A skirt or dress will peek out and you will want to colour coordinate. If it's going to be your one coat I would be tempted to hold out for a longer one (and by all means get purple or any other fun colour). But of course purple can be a very hard colour to find here. So that is a problem.
