This was fun, thank you for posting :)

(And strangely, I have to agree with Rachylou, because I think his style is kind of awful, but it is unique and one-of-a-kind)

RachyLou, the first thing you need is to understand the difference between preseidential vs. parliamentary democratic systems.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4quK60FUvkY

The US is one of the former, whereas the UK and the New Zealand are of the latter.

Then a secondary thing of importance is the electoral systems, i.e. how are votes counted?
The main difference here is between majority or plurality vs. proportional representation. This determines to a great extent the number of parties that matter in a country. In the US, you have majority systems and two fundamental alternatives, whereas in most countries where proportional system is used, there are more than 2 parties that need to share the power, i.e. come to a consensus and form the coalition.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOcVA0D4Gkg

I could explain more if you want, I am a political scientist. :)

I agree with Skylurker here. Love Danish television!

There are many examples in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East.

NZ has had examples of successful and unsuccessful coalitions.

I recommend the Danish TV series BORGEN, Rachy. A good series and educational too : you will see the workings of a coalition government.

Normally the key positions (called ministers) are from the main party but a couple of roles are from the smaller parties. Depends on the negotiation.

Thx Sal! Ok, let me ask this, when two parties get together and 'form a government' - does this just mean they ally to form a voting majority? Or are there certain positions in government that will be filled according to this alliance?

For example, in California, the governor doesn't come as a package with the lieutenant governor... there's no running mate, they're not elected as a team. So I'm wondering if something like that might happen - Prime Minister from one party, other ministers from the other party...

Ummm,

So we get two votes, one for the party, and one for the electorate (area/region/district). These might be for the same party or they might not.

MPs are either representing an Electorate or they are List MPs (chosen by the party).

Our parliament comprises 120 MPs (Members of Parliament) and the balance of these is determined by the party vote. So National got about 47% of the votes so they get 47% of the MPs (or about 54 MPs). Greens got 5.9% so they get this proportion or 7 MPs (etc). In this election the following parties got MPs into parliament (National/Labour/NZ First/Greens/Act)

To form a government you need a majority. So National does not have one - they need Coalition Partners to get over 60 seats, Labour and the Greens together cannot form a government on their own because their percentage is also under 50% . So parties work together/make a deal to try and form a government. The two most likely scenarios are National/NZ First or Labour/Green/First but there are other less likely options too.

The leader of the government (whether it is a single party or a coalition) becomes the Prime Minister/Leader. We do not vote separately for this position so in the last electoral term the leader of the National Party who was Prime Minister stepped down and the Deputy took on the role.

There are pros and cons to this system (it is similar to in Germany) but the positive aspect is that a vote for a minor party still counts, and we have a more diverse parliament.

This is a pretty simple explanation and I have missed a few things out but I hope it makes sense Rachy!!

Ok... completely OT, but Sal can you tell me exactly what it means to form a government? Are their particular positions to be filled? Positions with some kind of voting power?

I have never quite been able to pin this down to my satisfaction...

I think he might already have changed his hairstyle, it has been looking more subdued.

Here in NZ we are waiting on a coalition government to be formed under our MMP system. So we will either have Bill English (National, previous PM) or Jacinda Ardern (Labour leader). The balance of power is held by a third party (NZ First). There are a few more complexities than that and I believe there are nine possible scenarios that could develop. However barring an unlikely turn of events one of these two will be our leader in the middle of October once a deal is finalised. Our election was not without controversy either and had some divisiveness. Nevertheless, I am comfortable both are leaders of intelligence and integrity.

It has been a tumultuous year in Western politics.
