Terrific Spring poem. The "when the world is mud" part is so true for those of us in New England. "Mud" is our fifth season.

e.e. could just be my favourite poet. This one reminds me of Mary Poppins so much, whom I just love.

e.e. Cummings always had a sad/macabre/creepy side to his writing - like a contrast to the cutesy factor of the lack of caps and punctuation. The goat-footed balloon man always gave me the creeps - in poetry, I find only the beast that "slouches toward Bethlehem to be born" is creepier....

But happy spring! As I told Anna elsewhere, I was a huge and pretentious fan of Cummings in my teen years.

Suz, I just read that New Yorker article. Didn't realize he was such a womanizing iconoclast! Not sure I would have liked him IRL...

Thank you ! I loved the expression "puddle wonderful" reminds me of when my kids were little we would go out and run in the rain and stomp in puddles at the bottom of the drive way.....until my kids led me back to the house ! LOL

Those are good memories, thank you Ana, this really put a smile on my face today. : )

Love it, a most excellent spring poem, thanks for sharing, Anna.

This is my first reading of the poem, and Gaylene, I pictured a white mountain goat, nimbly appearing and disappearing on tiny hoofs, climbing higher and higher up a mountain side, tempting one to follow him. The sun and puffy tufts of clouds being the balloons, buoyant in the blue sky. I can imagine though, as a child, the goat-man image being scary! Sort of demonic pied piper.

Poetry Foundation. Love.

There was an interesting piece on e. e. cummings by Paul Muldoon in a recent New Yorker.

I love lilacs, too, Anna, and they grow like weeds in my part of the world. You can't cut them back enough. But it will be months before they're blooming here, alas...

Do you think WW was having a bad day when he wrote that morbid ode to mortality?
But there is always Wordsworth and his daffodils to perk up your spirits:
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/174790

Well I looking for something less depressing than this.
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/174748

I got excited by the title because we had a lot of lilacs growing up in my home.

Mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful Who doesn't remember spring that way as a child?

But I have to confess that this poem has always disturbed me; on the surface it seems so open and engaging, but I've always shuddered at the the image of that goat-footed balloonMan...whistling to the children.
