I don't have a Style Moniker yet (someday, when I have a better sense of who I am, style-wise, I hope to). I see it as a filter for purchases mostly, but really like the idea of knowing what adjectives I'm going for in my outfits too. So far, I'm just floundering and learning. And that's fun too.

Oh, Angie, this post almost made me feel so good, like a warm hug, because I've been struggling mightily along these lines and then I wanted to laugh and dance with happiness, after reading your response to rachylou and then rachylou's first thread, because of the lightheartedness of it all, which I somehow forgot in recent days.

Your explanation is brilliant and one I'm keeping on my desktop!

Here are a few of mine:

Playful
Modern
Comfort-driven
Tomboy
Elegant

Thank you BOTH, Angie and and rachylou, for discussing this topic when I most needed it. I'm all smiles now! :)

I find that when I look in the mirror, I NEED to ask myself "Is this Minimalist Magpie?" If not, then I need to follow up with "Is that OK for today?" Sometimes its OK to explore outside of the moniker as part of the process. I bet that Angie figured out by wearing a top outside of her three standard styles that new top styles just are not her thing.

Interesting post. My problem with the style moniker is it doesn't describe all aspects of my life. I mostly post WIW to work because that's the majority of what I wear, but my weekend and date night outfits aren't Modern Classic. Weekends are more California Casual and date nights more...something, not sure what exactly, that's one capsule I'm still working on. I'm ok with having different styles for different aspects of my life and I'm learning to build capsules to keep those aspects in check without getting bored (for example, I don't need more than 3 or 4 pairs of shorts).

Thank you, Angie. I find the moniker idea fun but also useful when shopping, especially when a shopping buddy or SA is pressuring you to buy something that may look good but doesn't feel right. Saying something like, "Nice but it's not Urban Prince enough for me" will render them speechless. Fun!

Thank you, Angie, thsi is so helpful. I think I'm finally getting this. This has been an eye-opener to me. I mean, the concept has been quite easy to understand, but the hard part was to find style descriptors that resonates with or feels like me. You named me Queen playful Classic Modern once, and I love that. Finally I'm starting to translate this moniker into more accurate terms that I can use for consolidating my outfits and style.

Angie, I really loved your reply here. The style moniker is a lot of fun for me. Thinking about it excessively is fun for me all by itself, lol. Like what I do and don't do with it, and where else it might lead to.

But the reason why I loved your reply was for its "peek behind the scenes." You don't necessarily ask "Is this Urban Prince?" and, pow!, it either is or isn't. There's criteria that goes into the making of Urban Prince. That illustrates a lot for me about how the process and product connect. And hey! I may not be as totally random and disconnected as I think I am; there could be hope that things don't have to happen by accident... Lol :D

The reptilian hunter gatherer in my brain must have a good sense of my style more that i do articulating it with a rubrik or moniker because. It keeps directing me to buy the SAME thing...black jackets, jeans, impractical heels, asymmetric anything. I may be in a rut.

Yes, Shevia -- I have found the "urban prince" descriptor to be magic for me when I am shopping, but really just because for me it is a sort of shorthand for my rubric, as Shannon calls it, or the adjectives that define my developing style. Those include sleek, angular, modern, crisp, asymmetrical, elegant, minimal, no-nonsense.

Very helpful explanation as usual! I do find "elegant tomboy" a great tool when I try to imagine if a new find would work for me, but do not think about it when getting dressed - then I just go with whether I like it or not. I think I am an intuitive dresser who loves to analyze retrospectively but would be paralyzed if I analyzed before I got dressed!

I have deliberately tried to avoid naming my style, for fear that it would be limiting rather than freeing.
After reading some of Rachy's feedback and your thoughts Angie, I might need to review my thoughts- so long as I don't take it too seriously of course!
Rachy posted a great question on style monikers:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....le-moniker

To which I replied:

Rachy, a style moniker has a huge sense of humour to it. Not to be taken all that seriously. It's just for fun, although there is also an element of truth in it of course. You are
very quirky! And UWP's take their look pretty seriously!! Afterall, they are warriors :). But really,
it's just a guideline as Suz put it, that keeps it all lighthearted.

Back
to your question. I don't look in the mirror and think - is this an
Urban Princely look? Rather, I think of the adjectives that I want to
convey with my outfit - much like how Anna described her outfit creation
evaluation process. I ask myself is this outfit:

- modern
- urban
- minimal (strong and simple and no-nonsense)
- crisp
- clean cut
- elegant
- equal parts Ladylike and Androgynous
- modest and comfortable
- on trend
- where are my classic pieces?
- what is my happiness factor?

In
some cases, like in my last outfit post, I have to amp up the "somewhat
conservative-professional" part of my look because the setting calls
for it. But I do not need to dress like that daily.

I don't have
to tick off each box for every outfit, but I strive to tick off 90% for
sure. Sometimes I am not dressed Tomboy at all. Sometimes I am a little
too Tomboy. As long as my happiness factor is on the high side - it's
all good.

I thought this might be helpful, so I reposted it as a thread.
