Great jacket I revisit items often. I'd say this year my revisited items were my green 2 piece dress (had a similar suit), velvet maxi skirt, velvet blazer, pleather jacket and pants (had black before), and hoop earrings.

Bijou - I have a sugar eye for bw tartan. I had a kilt and vest in that tartan through the 90’s. And I’d buy a great bw tartan blazer in a heartbeat if I found one. I think you are spot on to reference the beloved object not exactly redo. Btw the KM dress is tdf. I bet you rock that and perfect with the blazer!! Love it all!!!

Great jacket for your style, and great ideas for styling it too.
I sometimes look for items with a nod to the past, but always wear them in an updated or new interpretation. I’m not terribly sentimental or nostalgic!

Gorgeous jacket!!!! I think your approach in evolving a beloved item is very smart, it's difficult to find the exact replacement which also fit to the current lifestyle and body shape and I also doubt that it would have the same success as the previous one!

I am still looking to replace a coral jacket which was falling into pieces! Still looking for a replacement and will definately use your approach when searching for its replacement ! Thanks!!

Glad that everyone likes the potential new addition, which given it is such a classic and ageless item, makes me hope that it will be a workhorse in my wardrobe.

With my climate (in Australia), this is a jacket I will be able to wear in late Autumn, Winter and early Spring - so alas no wearing it until April 2022. My climate only gets cool with the lowest max temperature in Winter going down to about 12C. Our houses have no central heating, everything is designed for the heat, so 12C is 'freezing' to me and I rug up in sweaters, blazers, jeans and boots in winter.

Like JAileen, I too have a love of tartan especially since owning my beloved West Highland White Terriers. Margot is our 4th Westie.

I have experienced the same issues that others have described, being thrilled to replicate an old favourite only to find that actually my taste and style had shifted and what once worked so well, no longer does. On the other hand, like Shevia, lace up boots featured prominently in my university days and I have been thrilled to be back in combat boots again.

YLF has really helped me be more analytical rather than emotional in my purchasing decisions. Before pulling the trigger on this jacket, which I had seen about 1 month prior to ordering, I really thought about why I was attracted and whether this was just nostalgia for the 20's version of me or whether this was something that I want to wear now.

Love the new jacket for you and looking forward to seeing it in action! I do find myself drawn to certain styles over and over (lace up boots come to mind). In my case, it is just as likely I will find something similar to the original but now style it as a vintage piece, if that makes sense.

Ok. Haha. I have literally done the exact same thing. I went looking for my jacket and found it and then was no, no, that’s not it. I forgot, I recently also picked up a new blackwatch jacket, Ralph Lauren… more formal than my old one. My old one as it turns out is a casual unshaped blazer from Target. Which also doesn’t seem right. Gak. There may be a third somewhere…

Great jacket - and I think you will enjoy this lovely classic piece for a long time. I like both ways of wearing it and can think of more too (lovely with tailored trousers as well).

I do have looks that I hark back to a little bit over the years (striped long sleeve tees, block heel sandals, LBD). I don't know if I have done it consciously though....

Beautiful jacket! It looks like a perfect piece for you and the outfit ideas are great. How great to find a new version of an old favorite.
I am also sentimental and like revisiting some fashion moments. This year I bought a long woolen winter coat which reminds me of one I wore in the end of the nineties. It was a real investment piece for me then and I was so excited when I got it. It was double breasted, grey, a bit mannish. The one I bought now is blue and single breasted, but the classic long “mannish” style is still there, and the material is very similar. Not as excited over a new coat now as I was then - but a different kind of joy. More the subtle smile and nod to the younger me

Interesting question. For me, this is something that happens unconsciously and I only later become aware of it. I also find myself returning over and over to things that just seem to work, like others upthread.

Case in point: those gigantic pants I bought recently are giving me no end of pleasure for being ever so slightly similar to something I wore as a teen in the 1980’s. But different, because the next iteration is never quite like the last one. Besides, I wasn’t trying to replicate them, just drawing on the inspiration.

I would say, enjoy your lovely new jacket on its own merits as well as for the connection with your younger self. We cannot jump into the same river twice.

Oh, I love that jacket and think it will be stunning on you! What a great idea to go for the spirit rather than the letter of the original, so to speak. I think that will work out very well. Can't wait to see you in both outfits!

I think I often do this, but more often with less sentimental but essential items (like that "perfect" pair of jeans and the right turtleneck, etc.) and less often with statement items. With those, I usually do try to "tweak" it a bit so the item is an update.

Actually I succeeded this past winter with the new cream jumper which has had 26 wears already and I think is nicer than the 1985 version. But am glad I returned the cords which would not have been as good. I was less sure about them and other pants worked fine with the jumper.

Oh yes, I do this! I am such a sentimental person. I have tried to be really careful with it though as it is difficult to find something as good as the original loved thing, I feel.
So I think your way of nodding to/honouring the original but wearing slightly differently will be successful-looks great so far!

Lovely jacket, a great addition to your wardrobe!
I used to do this but not anymore. Earlier this year I bought a linen mix jacket from Eileen Fisher that is an updated version of my long gone Zara cotton/linen jacket. I loved the Zara one to pieces and I missed it.Yet I hardly worn the EF jacket although it’s a much better item. I realized that my style shifted and I don’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. When I saw a linen blazer from COS this summer that was so close to one I wore in 1999, I walked away. Been there, done that

I definitely do this. There are design elements and fabrics that I love and have acquired in various different versions over the years. Sweaters with silk scarf print inserts come to mind. My original versions were very classic cardigans with very preppy silk inserts. They were replaced by a boho Hale Bob tunic length sweater with a silk inset. The current version is what Angie called a modern twin-set, with a tank and a longer outer sweater, and a more modern silk print. I have a similar deep affection for black and cream paisleys and houndstooths, and always have pieces in those patterns my wardrobe, but they are never actual duplicates. I actually enjoy finding a different version, like a Kate Spade summer weight houndstooth pant, or an Elie Tahari summer cotton poplin paisley dress.

You know me—I’m far more likely to pull the original item back out than to re-create a look with different pieces. But there were a blue & white summer dress and a black/brown/white one I’d love to find a sister to, and I recognize that my favorite, favorite blue paisley poplin midi skirt is too tired to run with any more. If I could find similar, I’d wear it in a heartbeat.
Moving on from such wishful thinking, on my Christmas wish list was a white organic cotton fisherman’s sweater. Santa’s elves couldn’t find such a thing, so I’ve suggested a heavy white fleece jacket from Patagonia as a substitute. I’ve had white cotton fisherman’s sweaters and worn them into the ground a couple times in the past, so think this jacket is in the spirit of your post. I will wear it similarly, but not identically, to the ways I tossed on the sweaters.

Also on my list are these watch plaid pants that might interest you. They wouldn’t match your jacket, but might make a fun double plaid look. https://www.pendleton-usa.com/.....;cgid=W200

Also, I love the outfits your finds suggest, am looking forward to you modeling them.

I love a tartan jacket. I should wear mine. Used to wear it to the office, with trousers. I’d wear it with jeans now. Maybe my white leather skirt.

Well, I love that jacket and think it will be perfect worn both ways you have described. I just bought a cream quilted coat that reminds me a bit of one I used to wear. Time will tell if I will love it as much, but I did enjoy it the one time I wore it so far.

In the 1990's when I had just started out on my professional career, I bought a woollen black watch tartan skirt suit. It fitted perfectly and was a nice balance between being professional and feeling fashionable. I loved that suit which got worn into the ground and has never been replaced, because quite simply, I have never found anything to equal it.

Browsing through the Black Friday sales items, I found a jacket that reminded me of that old suit. Not the same cut and not a true black watch tartan as it has red and yellow in the mix. The jacket is on its way to me and will be my Christmas present.

On reflection, I am glad it is not a direct copy of its predecessor, as when I try to replace items, it usually leads to disappointment.

I will wear this jacket differently to how its predecessor was worn, not as a suit but as a separate formally with a little black dress and casually with denim (the jacket and examples of how I plan to wear it with are in Finds). Just pulling together a plan on how to wear this jacket makes me hopeful that I will love this jacket for what it is, rather than simply because it reminds me of something I remember as being great that I wore when I was young.

How have you gone with revisiting a favourite fashion moment from the past? What factors help make it work for you?
