Yes, post post! Thank you for your update; I had been wondering about my fellow UWP.

The weather has certainly taken an inopportune time to go crazy, hasn't it? You're too warm, I've been too cold, and suddenly it's 80F here again. o_0 And it sounds like a lot of our old guard are looking to find the cruise control instead of experimenting so much...

Denise has said what I was thinking - the "new" looks don't feel new. I think the last "new" idea I was super excited by was digital printing, lol. I wonder if society has gotten too PC to riff on more modern looks instead of regurgitating the past. It takes less guts to do grunge again than to create a high fashion line inspired by Somali pirates or Middle Eastern garb. Not that I'm suggesting either of those things, but in general Art has lost some of its teeth.

Yes, please post! And I want to see a few pics of the jewelry making process, as well as where you buy your raw materials. There is a Jo-Ann Fabrics in my county and they have jewelry making supplies and lessons, but the supplies looked super cheesy and cheap.

I think a lot of us are feeling uninspired, style wise. Part of it is the lack of break through silhouettes and ideas. Skinnies - around forever. Boyfriends -- 3 years mainstream. Mom jeans, not flattering. Crop tops -- hard to wear. Midis - hard to wear. High rise - check but is it really so different. Asymmetrical hemlines -- around for what 3 years? If it's back to flares and 70s I'm not sure I'm ready for that.Didn't we just have another 70s revival in 2011?

The nipped in waist and flowing pant leg silhouette that Angie referred to sounds interesting but hard to wear in all but perfect weather, I am trying to imagine it on the ranch with the fabric dragging and getting in the way. But I will try to pull together one outfit like this at least.

Aw, y'all! I thought this thread had died a natural death after I posted it but it is so nice to read all your kind words and thoughts. I am not going anywhere! Just not able to participate at my usual obsessive level. :) I couldn't live without my dose of YLF! Now I feel all warm and fuzzballs.

My jewelry is actually fairly simple and not that exciting - sort of along the lines of Sundance. I mostly give it away or do things on request. But once you see how cheaply most "handmade" jewelry can be done, it's hard to imagine paying the retail prices.

I have two outfits to post from the holidays - one is the silver suede snakeskin (not too much going on there at all) Lysse leggings which I adore. :) Will share when I get a chance!

Una, we will miss your presence and perspective on the forum if you're not around as much, but it sounds like are in a good place with your style (weather aside!). Reading your story and the comments, it's inspring to know how many people have hit a point of happiness with their wardrobes and that the cycle of buying does slow down after awhile!

We're heading for a deep freeze as I type --- December was warmer than usual here, too, and I loved it! Of course, transitional dressing (spring/fall) is by far my favorite, so I tend to have a wardrobe with many lighter layering options.

I remember well when you took your current your job --- for a little while you were like experiencing many "ack! What do I wear in an office?" sort of place. You should feel good about the ease with which you're getting dressed every morning!

Una! So great to see you!! I am in a similar place to you, with fashion taking a back seat to other priorities (most notably the ongoing house project). I can really relate to much of what's been said on this thread (*waving to Gaylene*) and I appreciate what Angie says about the Veterans having things to contribute. Even if we feel like it's all been-there-done-that, we can still cheer on and share our experiences with the newbies. Thanks for the reminder in that regard, Angie!

And Una, keep posting to the extent you are so moved! I don't think you could ever be boring if you tried!

I didn't think your post was long or boring. Our weather's been warmer, but winter is supposed to come back tonight.

I've been on a major shopping spree for the last two years, so it's time for me to slow down. The buy, purge cycle feels really wasteful. I have a list of 12 items plus 6 surprise finds, and I'm hoping to limit my shopping to those. I also think that there are way less options if you don't want to be modern classic, and overbuying can lead to a too classic closet, which leads to more buying. At least it does for me.

I really love this thread. I completely understand how weather can throw everything off, even when it is what you wish for sometimes. I'm also intrigued to know what kind of jewelry you make.... knowing you and your style, I can well imagine that it is very cool! Will you show us? I can also commiserate with the feeling of wanting to simplify. I am at the point where I don't need to really add new things, and I want to simplify everything, and yet I am so easily bored and continually want to try new things, that it is hard to keep sight of the simplicity goal. It is such a never ending struggle... I like the idea of a reprieve. That is a good way to put it!

I agree with everyone else Una, we would really miss you if you didn't check in at least once in a while! I know I haven't posted many WIWs myself so I can't expect everyone else to do it all the time, but I find a lot of the other conversations helpful as well. Maybe a lot of us are taking a bit of a shopping break...I know I don't feel the need to add too much, I do have a few replacement things in mind but they can wait.

Your weather must be putting everyone in a tail spin up there! We're having a slightly colder winter I think but it is Texas so it's never really that cold. Maybe this recent arctic air made it your way?

Just popping back in myself, Una, and it was so nice to read your post. I'm happy your plaid pants have been getting good wear -- I think I was right to return mine, as our weather has been oddly up and down temperature wise, and there has been a lot of rain. I don't know how often I would have reached for them in December. I'm glad to know they are being worn often and fabulously in Alaska!

I'm not at all feeling the pull to purchase or even shop lately. If it's going to happen, it's going to be serendipitous. It's funny because last January -- my first after joining YLF -- was a banner purchasing month. I took full advantage of the post-holiday sales and really shopped. But this year I am just not even looking. While out with a friend yesterday, I did see a top that I may go back and try on, but I don't feel any panic about it: I don't need to try it on; if it works for me, I will buy it; if not, I will leave it.

Somehow I have gotten to a place where I am just calmer about fashion and how I look. I'm happy about that, but I'm finding that I am also spending much less time thinking about my wardrobe and am much less inclined to take or post pics. I hope to chime in from time to time -- I am still reading posts! -- because I do love this site and want to stay connected.

And I really hope that one day I will see pics of your jewelry which I am sure is amazing.

I first thought you said a calendar year with no temperatures below freezing (I was having Celsius disorder) and I was aghast. Now that I have reread and understood I am just amused. What you don't think weather in the 50s is worthy of cashmere and puffers? You would laugh your head off if you saw what is going on here in preparation for a stormy week where the highs are predicted to never get to 60F!
Anyway, back to you. It is good to be busy and to have clothes you can rely upon, and as the weather thaws and time and energy permits you will possibly or even probably have a renewed interest in fashion. Stick around in the meantime please. Good to "see" you as always.

It's great to have a post from you, Una. Thanks for sharing where you are with your thinking and feelings on style. I sympathize with you about the long autumn you are having. For me, it was a long summer that we had in Seattle this year. It was nice--don't get me wrong--but really, I just didn't have enough shorts for that many days of shorts weather! Sheesh!
And as to a yen for other pursuits, for my part, I have been thinking of sewing things other than clothes (gasp!), maybe once in a while anyway. The bags I made as presents this season got me interested in doing more with stenciling on fabric, and I've also wanted to do some sewing for the home. Of course, as with clothes, there are only so many things one can use for the home. How many placemats and pillows does one need?
Or: Maybe I should learn to knit.
Anyway, I hope you are moved to keep participating here, even if you find yourself contributing a little less often. I'm always inspired by your style and your insights.

I've been missing you! You've been just ahead of me on this style journey since I joined and I have learned so much from your experiments, your thought provoking questions, and your probing analyses!

I'm glad you have reached a place of style zen -- that's fantastic! Roll with it and enjoy the freedom it provides.

I'm also really glad you got time to wear those LLBean pants! Plaid FTW.

As for the weather, I know it will change with the wind, so you never know what is coming. It's been warmer than usual here, too, without the kind of snow we had last year -- but today was so cold I went out and bought another hat. ;)

I couldn't agree more with Gaylene's comments. The veterans add wisdom and zest and this place would not be the same without you --- so please keep popping in when you get time!! :)

Not too long and not boring at all, Una. In fact, thought provoking. I've been looking through the winter sales ads in catalogues and online, and at the end of it all, I've removed everything from my shopping bags. Why? Just like you, right now I've got too much stuff.

A cardigan sweater? I've got four I've only worn once or twice so far this year. New shoes? What about the new booties bought at the NAS sale still waiting to be worn? And so it goes.

I think it's great to realize that we don't need anything right now. I hope it means that we've done a good job of shopping last year and in the last few months.

You often share thought-provoking posts with YLF and I always look forward to reading them.

Great to have you back...I've missed your fun...After our polar vortex last winter when my area suffered from every kind of awful weather, I will gladly, happily, merrily take this wimpy winter we are having...I hear you that the culture where you are is predominately winter and you miss the winter activities...I do understand that...For me, I had Christmas with lights, no ice jammed roof, no spending Christmas in a budget motel because I have a wonderful furbaby and this was all the room I could find...Talk about thinking there would be a stable somewhere nearby...smile..Here's to normality and may each of us find our normal...smile...I will enjoy you when you feel the urge to participate...

It's so good to see you, Una, and there is no need to apologize for being scarce. But it's nice to know that you and your style are missed, right?

There are quite a few of us who have reached a similar place in fashion, style, wardrobes, shopping...where we are happy with what we have, happy with how it makes us feel, and know that we want to wear what's in our closets rather than buying or even looking at what's in the stores. Its a good place to be. It sounds like a common cycle, as Gaylene described.

I can't imagine pining for colder weather! But it does sound like the warmer temps have had a real impact, not just on dressing, but activities too. When your snow does come, please keep it up there!

Jewelry making does sound like a good creative outlet, and another way to have fun with fashion. Please show us your creations...with the occasional outfit would be really nice!

Happy New Year Una.

I completely agree with Gaylene & love her last paragraph.

My wardrobe is smaller than it has been since my travelling days, so I don't post often, but I always have something I want to wear - even on our hottest days :) It was all the support I received from YLF that helped me get to this happy place with my wardrobe.

Una, enjoy your warmer weather. It also sounds like you've reached Style Zen - for a while anyway - that's brilliant. Run with it. Repeat, repeat, repeat. And work through the January Blues. We all have them.

I love what Gaylene said about the Veterans, and how important they are in this community because they assist newer members by relaying their own experiences, (and it doesn't matter if they repeat themselves). That's the main reason we created the forum 7 years ago - so that the community could help each other.

Glad you stopped in. Your winter weather so far is a bummer for you and your beautiful dog. I'm always interested in remix and repeat outfits. I also love your spectacular Alaska scenery photos.

I've actually been thinking a lot lately about the fashion cycle like Gaylene talked about. I think you've found that place where your closet is working really well for you. I for one love to see repeats and mix-ups of loved items so I hope you will post those. I'd also love to see your homemade jewelry incorporated into your outfits.

I recently thought about starting a thread in off-topic about what hobbies all of us have. For me it's rubber stamping, scrapbooking, and sewing. There just isn't enough time in the day to do it all!

Well, it was long but it certainly wasn't boring! I don't cope with the cold at all, so I guess it never occurred to me that not being cold enough could have it's problems too.

Do you think you ave just got to a point of wardrobe completeness where you like what you have more than most of the things that you could have? I think Gaylene (as usual) is very insightful about how that point arrives, but I definitely think it is a happy place and it sounds like it will give you space to explore your creativity in other areas.

But I echo Diane - it is great to see a whole bunch of diversity of styles in the forum and yours is one I would be sad to see disappear from it.

Happy New Year Una!! I know how you feel, kind of disorienting this weather. Nice to wear my fall boots but it's definitely throwing me out of kilter too. So empathy coming your way. I think Gaylene has really summed up my thoughts, except I think of think of it as the Dorothy principle - that we feel like the wide world of fashion is so much better and cooler than what we have but, in the end, we come back to who we are and have always been - but the difference is we choose it, we don't do it be default. I think that's the stage where it's finally only about what you like and what makes you happy that counts! Good luck with the jewelry, sounds awesome. I do not have the creative gene but it must be very fulfilling to make something beautiful. Selfishly I do hope you keep writing and posting, I find your style, your combinations and choices endlessly inspiring and we are close enough in body type that I can be a total lemming on many of your items!! But my New Years wish is that you do exactly what brings you joy! May it be wonderful on every level!!

Nice to hear from you, Una! I found myself agreeing with many of your observations and realizations (Gaylene's too.) My interest in fashion takes a back seat when I'm busy or immersed in other projects so you are not alone. I do try to keep my eye on what's going on around here but it's because I feel so vested in the community AND because I like to see what other people are wearing--outside my podunk town :)

Crazy weather seems to be going around!

Hopefully you'll post some of your jewelry, or better yet, some of the fab outfits showcasing the fab jewelry.

And yes, I hear you, and I think what Gaylene says has a lot of merit. There does seem to be this churn phase at the beginning as you try to find your style before you start to settle in.

I also like to see how forum members make their closets work for them, especially when it isn't with new pieces all of the time.

Bleh, we are having the same warm winter...only so much further south that I'm out today in a light sweater and no coat. It is killing me, as cold weather clothes are my favorites, and really the only time I feel approaching fab, and the season is short enough even in a good year.

Please stick around...I love your posts! Show us the jewelry, or do those philosophical discussions you do so well!
