I’m intrigued by this approach. I’m in the bumble camp Along with Elizabeth P and LisaP. This makes a lot of sense. I’m in the process of my first winter/summer switchout (inspired by a a brief spell of 75+ degree weather after our endless winter in the N. Cali mountains, but sadly back to the 60s last week so I was digging into the underbed storage) and a purge. I will reread and track responses to help guide me. I like be hearing how others approach this. Thanks!

Jenava, your strategy is fun and makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you!! You inspired me. Congrats on your impressive and specific analysis. Also on the great green and lavender combo!

I just today tried something similar with my wardrobe in a casual, intuitive kind of way, with a slightly different take, and it got me to a specific shopping list very fast. My personas are based on the various functions of my existing items in terms of the activities I do, as well as who I feel like while doing them. My percentages are based on the approximate time I spend in each role.

For example, my clothes are about 40% "Free Spirit" for most of my daily activities, 30% "Lounger who Exercises", 10% "Comfy Traveler", 10% "Arty Urbanite in the Country", and 10% "Italian Movie Star". (She helps me get dressed to go out on the town.)

I quickly realized that I am set on most of these, and only need a couple of practical items and one fab fit-and-flare dress. A fun analysis to do, and surprising but pleasing results. My clothes are more in line with my lifestyle than I would have thought, because a year ago they were definitely not.

I am very tempted to try your system myself but I think for now I need to keep my focus on building a better understanding of how different outfit formulas work in my wardrobe.

So I will enjoy reading along as you carry out your plan. I love the lavender blouse to go with your green suit. Wow, what a stunning outfit!

Interesting. I’ve not thought of doing ratios within style categories. Ive only done this for seasons (80% winter 20% summer) but it makes sense to do this based on style categories too.

I like all the descriptions here, they instantly create a visual in my mind and are so useful! I wish my style statement worked like that. Maybe it’s too general and breaking it into categories like this would help. I am intrigued by your Earthy Girl category. My version of the same would include a mix of athleisure (I’m thinking down filled vests, polar fleece jumpers, baseball hats and visors, etc.) rustic outdoor hunting/camping gear (flannel shirts, hiking boots, anything camo print), and Birkenstock’s.

Did you use emotion to decide on your aspirational percentages? Lifestyle factors?

This is fascinating Jenava!

A while back I toyed with splitting my "Gentlewoman" moniker into 3 personas (or more like settings or locales): Town, Country, and Shore. I have thought of revisiting it recently as my summer wardrobe comes out to play and I realize how much more preppy-adjacent I become in the summer.

Now you are making me want to fine tune it some more. Maybe personas? Or maybe eras, more like yours? Thanks for getting the wheels turning!

Thanks Jenava! This is very helpful to me. Not so much for ease of shopping, but for moving my style forward. I'm wanting to evolve it without abandoning the 'Tomboy' moniker that works so well for my current and ongoing style. I think I'm going to work on some mood boards with two different style personas and develop some capsules around the concepts. Like Suz said about Vix, and also like Broklyn's evolving style - having multiple style personas doesn't mean you can't mix and match or have some cross pollination.

I was also just thinking, it's sometimes tough to classify a single item, rather than a "look" this way, but I find when I'm attracted to a garment it's with an assumed way of wearing it in the back of my mind, so THAT'S what I used to classify the items...Intent. But certainly my items in the end can be worn lots of different ways. So if you're NOT like me and you don't shop like this, then this process would probably be nonsensical.

Oh, and I also classified by season and color group (whites, pastels, brights, jewels, navy, grey, black). I think I also need to split it by type (top, bottom) and season, to make sure I'm balanced there, but I feel that when those areas are unbalanced it's more obvious...I end up with items I dont wear often or wear too much, or I have trouble finding outfits for certain weather conditions, for example. The style capsule ratios I think help solve a more subtle problem, which is that in sometimes crave a certain persona and find I've over indexed on something else and so miss that element in my outfits. E.g. I find a lot of 80s chic now and not as much of the 70s dressy and sometimes I just really feel like wearing a sweater vest and a pair of flare leg jeans!

I did this at my desk (while pumping breastmilk) and classified my closet from memory. What will be interesting is to see how much I missed!! Lol. That will throw my ratios off. I played around with the number of garments and the ratio they translated to which is how the percents got so specific. I started out with very general ratios but with so many categories on a relatively small scale (the total number of garments I own) they had to become a little more esoteric or I'd be buying far more than I was comfortable with (I like to wear all my things in a season, which happens to be my preference and therefore I try to avoid functional duplication outside of my truly essential things like white and cream blouses).

If anyone else tries this I'd be interested to hear how it works out...

This is really helpful Jenava, thank you for posting. This could help me to actually make some style goals. I do have several sub-personas, as it were. And the ratio idea is genius.

How interesting that you described 'persona capsules'! I've always thought some of my wardrobe items and outfits are further removed from my moniker than others, but never thought to honor seperate personae so intentionally :). It would probably push me too far into numbers territory as I already have spreadsheets and calculations on seasons and categories (eg tops) supporting my shopping list and I could actually do with some more emotion/intuition :).

I especially like is how you embrace the personas in your style. Sometimes I think I try to reduce too much. I have no idea how you quantified it so exactly, but I like the idea of thinking about the proportions. I am scurrying off with Rachy to survey my closet!
