I stumbled across a wonderful writer recently, Kelly Corrigan. Via Libby, I read Tell Me More, partly in print and partly listened to her audio book while walking. I don't love audio books, but I did really enjoy hearing her tell her stories, a few of which were completely heart-wrenching. I am now reading an earlier memoir Glitter and Glue, and am a little sleepy because I've read in bed a little too late the last 2 nights!

I see she has a podcast, so am going to give it a try.

My Libby holds are piling up.

Following up on this post…back from my readathon, also know as my week at the beach.
Here’s what i read, with some thoughts:
”Girl in Translation” by Jean Kwok. About a Chinese girl and her mother who immigrate to the US. My family came to the US about 100 years before, it was both disturbing and affirming to realizing the similarities between our stories. Great book
”The Last Watchman of Old Cairo” by Michael David Lukas. I really like historical fiction, and this integrates some history with the story. I liked this one, but i think it helped that years ago i had read “The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit” by Lucette Lagnado, which is about an Egyptian Jewish family’s life before and after they left.
“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A fun read, perfect for when you want to lose yourself in a good story, but don’t want to think to much
“Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. This one took me a long time to get into, and i almost put it aside. But I’m glad i stuck with it. Examines slavery and colonization and its aftermath from both the African and the Black American sides by focusing on 1 family thru multiple generation.
“Heat & Light” by Jennifer Haigh, I’m about 3/4 of the way thru this book. It’s about fracking in PA, so it hits on a lot of issues that have been part of my life for the past 20(ish) years, but which have not impacted me in a direct day to day way. This is the 4th book I’ve read by this author, and its quite good, but not my favorite.

not pictured, but totally recommended:
“The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett. Loved this. So much to think about, this is a book that stays with you, but its not so heavy that reading it feels like a chore…(hope that makes sense)

A couple of my patrons at work have really liked the Addie LaRue book.
Also, Who is Maud Dixon by Alexandra Andrews.
Not long ago I read The Deep, Deep Snow by Brian Freeman. It is a missing child story, but also has a storyline about the main character and her father’s declining cognitive abilities.

I've been on a reading kick for about a year and a half now - so I love these book threads!

My most recent 5 star reads include:
Eat The Document - Dana Spiotta - about 2 anti-Vietnam protesters and a protest that goes very badly!
The Editor - Stephen Rowley -about a first-time writer whose novel is picked up by a large N.Y. publishing house and his editor is Jackie Onassis.
The Color of Water - James McBride - autobiographical about the author and his white Jewish mother.
With Love From the Inside - Angela Pisel -

I'm currently about half way into Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. A beautifully written story about a poor black family and the 10 days leading up to and during Hurricane Katrina. A very difficult read for me - the treatment of the dogs as well as the dog-fighting scenes have just about done me in.

I also recently re-read The Dog Stars by Peter Heller and loved it as much as I had the 1st and 2nd times I read it! It is definitely in my top 3 fave books of all time!

I got through the Midnight Library but didn't really enjoy it that much. Didn't hate it - didn't love it!

I've also been plodding through The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. I keep thinking that I'm going to get hooked into the story - but I'm about half-way through and so far nothing . . . don't think I will pick it up again!

I read earlier this year The Silent Treatment by Abbie Greaves and loved it!

I could go on - but will stop for now! :-)

Ahhh - so many books, so little time!

I always love these books threads. So many good suggestions to add to my reading list. Thanks, MsMary! I’m currently reading Stephen King’s Billy Summers and can’t put it down. Louise Penny’s latest is also on my reading list, and my hold for The Ministry for the Future has just become available at the library. Looking forward to starting it after hearing your review.

A few others I’ve enjoyed this summer…
Anxious People by Fredrik Backmon
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
Piranesi by Sussana Clarke
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan

I haven't been reading much this summer because I have had chronic migraines. Awful. The weather is probably part of the reason. I may try audiobooks.

Larsen is such an engaging writer, and I need my history to be this readable. It's a really long book so I've had to return it a few times and wait for it to become available again. I keep pushing off other holds that pop up as available, I'm determined to finish it this time.

I primarily read nonfiction, but that doesn't mean I don't go in for some light summer reading! I have been reading The Science of Monsters: The Truth About Zombies, Witches, Werewolves, Vampires and Other Legendary Creatures by Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl. It is entertaining, but doesn't contain much information I wasn't already aware of.

I also picked up The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Bloom, which I also anticipate being a light read.

What Sally said about rereading books we read when younger. We often notice completely different things. I reread My Antonia by Willa Cather ( it is close to the story of my immigrant family members from Sweden who settled in Nebraska.) and found it very different than the first time.

My mother-in-law sent me a stack of books she recently finished that she thought I would like, including a couple of old mysteries by Josephine Tey. They were written in the late 20s through the early 50s, but are still very readable, and I'm just adoring the escapism to another time.

Suntiger, I just discovered my public library has started using Hoopla, which is great because their old app just stopped working for me! Thanks!

Joy, I will have to check out Donna Leon. I was in Venice two summers ago and it just rocked my world!

The midnight library by Matt Haig
Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman
Redhead by the side of the road by Anne Tyler

All have quirky characters, seem light to read but have a real message about life. I read a facebook post recently that we should reread our favourite novels at different stages in our life. It will be the same story but our perspective changes (or words to that effect). So I've been rereading ladder of years by Anne Tyler, an old favourite of mine. I've got a few others I want to reread as they had an effect on me when I was younger.

I love Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache novels and have read them all. Many, if not all, are also available as audiobooks.

Lately I have been devouring novels by Donna Leon, especially the Commissario Guido Brunetti set in Venice in modern times. The books will give you a craving for Italian food.
the one I just finished, The Jewels of Paradise, is not a Comissario book but the main character is researcher in baroque opera from Vienna. An enjoyable visit to the researcher’s world.

The author is an American who has lived in Venice for at least 30 years.

JAileen, fun fact: I was on Jeopardy! back when Alex Trebek looked like that! (No, I didn't win -- I had the bad luck to be on with somebody who went on to hold the "biggest winner in the history of Jeopardy!" title until KenJen came along!)

Lisa, I enjoyed Leave the World Behind.

Pil, The One in a Million Boy looks amazing and heartbreaking. I will have to check it out.

Right now I'm reading political books, but I'm not going to discuss them here. I haven't been in the mood to read a novel, not even a mystery by a favorite author. I'm about to start a biography of Kurt Gödel, Journey to the Edge of Reason. Never could understand his theory. So far it's excellent. He was a good friend of Einstein. So it's kind of a mystery and a different form of escapism.

Rachy, your book sounds fascinating.

I’ve just got the Alex Trebek ebook from our library.

Bonus photo: A mural of him in his porn star mustache, at his old high school in Ontario.
