What a fun going to a club outfit! The belt adds a lot of visual interest to the waist area. Fun shoes in this look too.

lyn--I mostly experienced these things through TV, anyway--I never got around to wearing a mini-dress at a club!

Lyn--I always love a good Fly Girls (In Living Color)/Madonna vibe, and I think the belt and graphic blazer help achieve that. Maybe the belt would feel restrictive, but I didn't have it super tight, and I would compare it to maybe keeping the clasp of your necklace at the back of your neck all night.

If it were hot, I might take off the jacket, because it is a totally acceptable, solid black bralette. (But I might do a few more sit-ups before I went out.)

Androgyny is one angle, and certainly club culture has a long history of that. But I don't think it's necessary at all. Look at how popular bodycon dresses and platform heels were for years at clubs--those are more feminine than this. Balancing masculine and feminine elements seems to be a good general practice, that doesn't need to be practiced everywhere. I do love ankle pants, though, and I would try that.

Here is a photo of just how girly people were dressing at clubs a few years ago, and the second is the group En Vogue, who kind of dressed like this. I would kill for their wardrobe.

Why wearing the belt on the skin?? Ah, this is a silly question on a fashion blog I guess as we do so many things not having practical uses apparently but wouldn't it move around or up and down on the ribcage and hurt your skin? Am not really fond of the idea not even for clubbing on a hot night (the blazer would be too heavy then, but that is only my 2 cents).

Then, if not for showing up the belt, I have seen some ladies wearing no shell, only bra or bralette under a buttoned up tux jacket/blazer for clubbing but always part of a pant suit think exactly for achieving a good juxtaposition of flirty feminine vibes with a bigger dose of androgynous. Those laced heels would look great under some ankle pants, just saying. Or you can wear a more androgynous shoe (say engineer ankle boots) to your initial outfit exactly for that same reason, if you would want so.

Sharan--great idea! And as for the shoes--yes. I love a dramatic heel, but a lower one might be better. A sharp kitten heel, or even like a black patent ankle boot. I like the idea of this shoe in a lower version, which I am sure exists.

Carol, this is fantastic! It looks so sharp! I really like how the belt, earrings, jacket pattern, and shoe details work together, echoing details and intricacy.

I agree this is a great clubbing outfit, or wear it for cocktails or a party. Is it the heel height that makes the shoes less comfy? Maybe you'll come across a pair with a similar vibe that are lower and more comfortable. Meanwhile, you could try the outfit somewhere that you could plan to take off your shoes if need be and slip on a pair of ballet flats to continue dancing!

It does kind of look like it could be part of the top?! Makes me think of a clubbing outfit so you could do your moto boots as an alternative…
I think you could carry it off.

You could wear this with lace up boots (like a Doc Marten) and still look sassy?

I like the skirt, bralette, overshirt combo- I would probably not wear the belt with it but leave it more simple. But I also think why not wear it how you want to?

A bit embarrassed to share, but...

a few weeks ago, Jessica wrote a post about unconventional uses for belts. I thought of my one true waist belt, a simple black number with gold hardware, and wondered how it would look against my bare skin.

So here I tried it with a pencil skirt, lace-up heels, a simple bralette, and my new Chevron blazer. Truth be told, I would like to dress like this all the time, but don't for various reasons, especially foot comfort. Also truth be told, I WOULD wear this out, and might be able to find a reason at some point.
