Thanks everyone, I love hearing the journey of others. Runcarla, he read the Lord of the Rings and I was disappointed that as a family with 4 kids he didn't relate more to that...he was still so frustrated with his schooling experience that he was still at a point of resistance with reading....I feel like we are finally moving beyond the years of programing that he had a disability that never existed. He himself realized that it was a teaching disability, his words, but never really got the gravity of how true that really was...

I was worried about my eldest son's literacy skills. Around the time he was in grade 5 we discovered the Harry Potter books. I made a deal with my sons that if they were ready for bed by 8 p.m. I would read a chapter or two, then I would read as promised and 1 paragraph of the next chapter. #1 son was so keen on the books, he would take them to bed and read ahead after I had read to them. My re-reading the next night helped him understand.

The summer between grade 6 and the start of Jr. High #1 read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (and could discuss it) and I knew he would be okay!

What a wonderful story, Tracey. It really touched me. So glad for you and for your son.

I volunteered for several years as a literacy tutor, then worked with kids who have learning differences in a high school -- and later, briefly homeschooled my own daughter, who has learning issues of her own (although not in reading).

My daughter read the Giver last year and loved it, as well. It seems to speak powerfully to kids in this age group, so you made a very good choice.

As someone whose professional life consisted almost entirely of working with kids with reading disabilities, this warmed my heart.

And my son also loved The Giver. :)

Wonder if your son would like to learn spelling from an etymological basis? By this I mean examining the Latin/Greek/Arabic/whatever origin, then thinking of words that use that base/suffix/prefix/whatever. And then doing this in the reverse by dissecting words. This seems to be done some in schools, but I'm envisioning this at a deeper level because it sounds as though your son has intellectual depth.

BTW, I loved the Giver. I read it as an adult after my daughter did.

Yes, this book is truly one that offers a lot of room for discussion and the fact that he is starting it instead of me is wonderful... As the youngest of four in a family that has never dumbed down language and a 14 year spread between siblings, he has the benefit of amazing family discussions and a huge interest in every new word that evolves from such... Now, if I can only get him to use the Dragon software program I bought to help overcome the writing issues....

He is a perfectionist and while studying for spelling and acing all tests the lack of spelling be taught sequentially, he has an innate ability to know that he is spelling wrong and gives up... Verbally he can give such great information and amazingly complex age appropriate sentences... handwrittien is dumbed down and he is never saitisified and quits.. So, maybe I can hope for finishing this year and summer with really instillig the reading and make the writing next year's big project... I so want this child to have all doors open to him the way his siblings do, all going for advanced degrees and using their intielligence for good in this world...

Thanks for letting me share the most important thing in my life these days!!!

This made me tearful. What a wonderful moment, monumental for sure!

A few years ago while I still lived in the UK I was volunteering as a reading mentor at one local school and experienced first hand how sad it was when children did not have that basic, essential skill. I was so sad and sometimes upset after every session with the 12yo boy I was assigned to as I could not help wondering what the future holds for him. This is one of the reasons why your story caught my attention immediately when you first mentioned your son and I admire you immensely for being so brave, proactive and following your instinct to give him the opportunity to reach his potential. I am so happy and emotional to read this. Thank you for generously sharing your experience, I hope anyone who has any doubts l will find it encouraging.

So great to see the fruits of your labor -- both of yours! The Giver is such a terrific book, full of so many provocative and deep questions. He must certainly have developed strong vocabulary and comprehension skills if he can be moved to discuss it with you. So exciting!

From another homeschooling Mom (my first year) of a boy with excellent reading skills and vocabulary but lacks comprehension and interest, this encourages me to press on. D is on his second book since January but he has yet to share without me pressing for details.
Congratulations to both you and your son! Perseverance pays off!

What a happy story! Yay! I think if you teach a child to read and enjoy it you have accomplished a grand thing.
My 4 1/2 year surprised me by sounding out some short words a couple weeks ago. I skipped ahead in his kindergarten workbook (homeschooling also) and was pleasantly shocked at the result.

As I have mentioned before ,I chose to homeschool my youngest 3 years ago after he completed elementary school as a struggling reader without good phonetics or decoding skills. He is super smart and was getting by with guessing synonyms for words based on other content in the sentence and was pretty good at it. I spent our first year on a remedial phonetic program that was geared towards third graders to adults. It was thorough and a perfect match for his intelligence and love of words, he has a great vocabulary. He has been fighting me on reading books despite his new skills and capabilities ,but I have been pushing hard, knowing that with success his confidence would grow.... That's the backstory and now to the point of my overwhelming joy that has brought me to tears. Last night at about midnight he got back out of bed to tell me a part of the story he is reading that was an important point. He had been in bed thinking of this and couldn't get it out of his head. This is monumental as it is the first time he seems to be connecting to a book as before its just been an assignment he did because I made him. He was smiling ear to ear when he was telling me. The book is The Giver by Lois Lowry, an age appropriate book his brother read in advanced English at this age! From being 3 years behind to this!
