Hmm about a style you're running away from...

But I have to say it all looks really super seeing it all together on screen. I kinda like the zebra top there, because it sorta makes for a tidy capsule with it...

The way I figured out the concept of essentials, is to ask the question: ‘if this item wears out, would I try to replace it with something similar?’ For example, through 7 years of YLF mariner style striped tops in white and navy or white and black have always been a part of my closet. I have to replace about every 2 years due to wear, but I always replace with white and navy or white and black stripes. Coloured stripes (statements) come and go, and when they get worn out I don’t replace with the exact same colour, but rather a different colour combination.

I USED to always have turtleneck sweaters - black, dark blue and grey. Like the mariners, I would replace them with nearly identical sweaters once they wore out. Sometimes I had more black, of black and blue, without the grey. I might have a coloured turtleneck sweater, like mustard or wine, but I wouldn’t replace it like I would the black, blue, and grey ones. I’m currently down to one that is a blue/black mixed yarns, but I’m off the style, ATM - so it is no longer an essential for me.

Yes it’s funny isn’t it that no matter how large ones wardrobe is there always seems to be a core of clothes that get worn over and over.l guess paying attention to what this core is will be the fundamental building blocks of a functional wardrobe.

I think you've got it perfect Synne ... your 'signature' look seems to be neutral essentials as you've shown, with statement pieces added such as your neon shoes (or the zebra top) ... and then a lot of your style is in the styling/layering, etc. of these pieces.

Good job!

Take out the zebra top - that's not quiet enough to be an essential, although I get that it's a workhorse!

The rest you have nailed

Yes, those pesky essentials... Sharing mine, or lack thereof, more precicely. As far as I interpret wardrobe essentials, I'm thinking "items I need to build outfits around".

Not that many to be found in my wardrobe. Not surprising.. I have been overstocking on statements. Shopping and shopping and shopping some more.

Interesting to see that plain, trendy-ish jeans are essentials. Mock neck and polo necks in various weights, sleeve lenght and colours. Solid coloured high top sneakers. Military inspired, masculine, sporty tomboy. The style I have been running away from.

If I lost my entire wardrobe, these would be the items I'd miss the most. Couldn't get dressed without them! Surprised at the modest numbers. What have I been doing with the rest of my wardrobe inventory?!
