Congratulations on doing this massive edit. I did not count the numbers removed from my wardrobe - but I think I down sized by about 1/3. Much of mine was overdue. I need to work on a one in - one out philosophy now. I think that will make me be more mindful of my purchases and help stop the comfort shopping, because I have been guilty of this too.

Wow. Thank you for explaining how you had responded to stress and loss in that way, I can really relate. I've found it has actually helped me relate to people with all sorts of addictions better to have experienced some psychological issues myself. It sounds like a really hard time you went through. I can't imagine how much more space you must be about to have both physically and mentally!
How to stop it happening all over again, that's the thing...

I can identify with several aspects in particular turning to your closet and the forum as a way of dealing with stress. I still do that as a distraction.

I also am delighted your son is thriving at college!! Fab news.

Staysfit, you are a mensch! I just love what you shared with us here. It makes perfect sense to me that you would buy up a storm in your time of loss and grief and stress. You were seeking order and fun and beauty and perhaps a bit of security and comfort -- and clothing can indeed offer all of that. Now you are ready to refine and let go of some of the "extra" and that, too, makes perfect sense. Someone else will be so thrilled to get your beautiful almost new things and there is no reason for regret or remorse. Now you'll have a wardrobe that works even better for your needs, and you may not have been able to figure out what those needs were without the buying spree at the start. Brava!! I can't wait to find out how you feel about your new more moderate closet.

Oh, I certainly understand and relate to much of what you’ve written re: shopping as a coping strategy. My mom did it, and I do it too. Well done for admitting it and working on improving the habit.

“I think cleaning up helps when it’s time for a big decision or change. Clearing out physical space somehow also clears out mental space and will alow me to move to some other creative endeavor.”

This is very much true, and timely, for me as well. My husband and I are seeking to simplify and streamline our rather busy, scattered, complex lives next year, and I’m feeling the call of editing and organizing to help prepare and clear my mind and home for whatever comes next. I’m not sure yet what the next phase of our life will look like, but there is indeed something very appealing about making way for new adventures to fill some freshly-cleared space in our lives.

These are some deep revelations; thank you so much for your honesty and vulnerability in putting all this into words. I can’t imagine how stressful the last few years have been for you, and am very glad that your son and daughter are doing so well. This comment resonated for me, “My focus has definitely improved, but in a funny way I think it had improved somewhat before I could take on this project.” It is so interesting how our clothes take on a larger meaning. My family went through a stressful period 9-10 years ago- also involving job changes and loss of a friend at too young an age. And in this most recent closet edit, I told myself it was time to let go of the last few pieces of clothes from that time- pieces that I had hung onto because they served as a reminder that we made it through that time. But, I finally realized that I have the memories, and the clothes (and the challenges they represented) needed to go. I’m sure it must feel like an incredible burden has lifted to have all the other parts of your life, including the job shift, fall into place. And “yea” for time to pursue a new interest.

Thanks everyone! I have a busy morning so I am not able to reply to each of you separately, but I may have time after work.

I definitely feel lighter and more energized, as I always do after cleaning and organizing, however my typical projects have not involved such a large scale effort on my wardrobe except when I first started posting on this forum and was rebuilding my wardrobe in a new color palette. At that time I culled a large amount of items that were definitely wrong, but there was still a lot left of items in JFE colors. This is mostly what I culled in this go around, plus the stripes, whites and worn items.

My focus has definitely improved, but in a funny way I think it had improved somewhat before I could take on this project. So many pieces fell into place at the right moment. I had a job shift 10 months ago, and I have felt less stressed in my work environment, and more productive as well. I have seen my autistic son thrive in college and learned that he can work well with a group. People like him, and now I have less worry about his ability to get and maintain employment once he finishes school. DD had some serious relationship turmoil in the past 6 months but she used her friends and family for support and made good choices for her life and future. I am very proud of her. The situation was scary and stressful for her, but also for me as her mother. I used to find that focusing on my wardrobe a panacea for my stress. Before I joined the forum, my childhood best friend died from glioblastoma, a brain tumor, which she lived with for 13 months before her death. Her family and close friends were devastated. I cannot tell you how often I wish I could call her or talk to her about something. In short order there were multiple deaths in my family, which is small, of people for whom I cared deeply, my BIL only in his 40’s, my half sister (who I didn’t know but it made me sad anyway), my uncle, my step father, my MIL and my style icon aunt. My unhealthy reaction was to shop. I overfilled my closet. My large wardrobe became huge and spilled into closets in other rooms of the house. Clearly I could not replace my friend or family with fashionable clothing. My initial wardrobe edit is well documented, and public. I have no doubt that there are other people who have done this sort of thing or start out a shopping addiction in this way. I never spent beyond my means, and have not created any financial stress but all the clothes were not necessary. In any case, I have sorted all this out, and it’s really time to let go of that past. I am confident in the world with the memory of the people I loved, and have found better ways to cope with loss. I think it’s important to admit that a mental health professional can end up using poor coping strategies. It was a lot of loss in a short time.

I think cleaning up helps when it’s time for a big decision or change. Clearing out physical space somehow also clears out mental space and will alow me to move to some other creative endeavor. It will also allow DH and I to downsize, if that’s what we choose.

Wow! That’s awesome. You are working with some great personal rules l, like color, pattern, and rise heights.

I work from a restricted set of personal style rules so sometimes I am frustrated as I am slowly rebuilding my wardrobe— sometimes I even wonder if I’m being too picky. But then I find the perfect item and I’m wowed by how it reflects me and I’m glad I saved my shopping budget for full on joy rather than good enough. I still experiment sometimes and try unusual (to me) silhouettes and patterns as long as they are in my color palette. I have had some recent wonderful surprises that I will have to write about soon.

I think you’ll love your wardrobe more now that it is more cohesive, more you.

Very impressive :). I LOVE the sounds of your colour palette. I’m totally with you about white too... it’s looks terrible on me.... really it does. So I’m like you, I only use it as an accent really. Lately I’m finding camel, cream and oatmeal useful light neutrals. I wonder if you would like those? As long as the shades you pick aren’t TOO warm.... more the cooler side of camel/oatmeal/cream iykwim.
I hope you enjoy making outfits now from your super- organized wardrobe!

This is soooo impressive! Wow. I’m looking forward to phase 2, as I always thought of you having a clear style and palette after your wardrobe revamp a couple of years ago. The fine tuning will be interesting to follow.

Bring the glasses in to your optometrist. Most collect old glasses and will find a good home with folks who can't afford frames, etc. I keep one back-up pair (if prescription accurate) and donate the oldest unless I love the frames. In that case, I will get updated lenses.

I bet your outfit creation session will be illuminating! I'm enjoying putting less worn items into higher circulations and have yet to feel the desire to buy new things!

Wow! I can’t imagine how much time that took. I’ll be curious how you define your style in phase 2 of the edit. Great insights about stripes and white, and how those work only in very limited circumstances for you.
