I do my own thing. I do wear some maxi skirts, but not maxi dresses. I'm quite short, and it's easier to find skirts that fit rather than dresses. Like ambergreen, I wear the ones that are quite straight cut, because otherwise I'm overwhelmed in the fabric. I say, if maxis appeal to you, buy yourself one or two and try them out! Angie always says to have fun with fashion.

It really depends. Some trends (motos, loafers) I jump on immediately, others like skinnies take me some time to embrace, and some like the maxi thing will never be me.

Influence is all around, but I try to keep it authentic to me. I am mindful of my surroundings, but by no means use that to temper or change the trends I wear. I watch a good chunk of the runway shows and glean trends that look interesting to me, watch the street style around me and online, and of course listen to what Angie and the YLF forum has to say about trends. I have a good handle on my style, so I can pick the trends that suit my fancy and my lifestyle. Because I'm not around many people day-to-day, I love using YLF to get feedback on experiments

Yes, maxis have been trendy for at least 3 years that I can tell, but Angie herself is not a fan so you may not have seen much coverage here.
I like what Isabel mentioned about incorporating trends subtly to remain modern. I don't need to look like I'm a blogger on Instagram, but I don't want to lose touch with what's going on either. I'd say I'm a 6 or 7 on the trend-o-meter.

I use local and general style for inspiration but pick and choose what to incorporate with my own thing.

I love easy knit maxi skirts with tees in the summer--it's like wearing a full-body T-shirt. I don't wear the dress type much because of fit and skimpiness issues with a lot of the tank-style ones, and I prefer to guard against potential sunburn (I am pale!)

But my type of maxi is usually just a straight black column (though there is one pattern I am looking for). I don't care for the horizontal-striped ones that have come out every year for a while (they just scream "junior department beachwear!" to me), and more fabric than a straight one overwhelms me. So again, I'll follow the trend for comfort reasons but do it my way.

PS, I had a Birkenstock sighting yesterday. A young lady wearing straight-leg jeans and I think a tank top.

I am not a trend follower, usually. It took me YEARS to get on the skinny jeans bandwagon. YEARS.

But today's post by Aida was a real learning experience for me. The entire post was about trying "trends". If I had not read it in her post, I never would have guessed it was about trends. So now I want to subtly incorporate, like she did, to look modern.

I have been influenced by the postings here because of the IRL aspect. It's like the advice to try more things; there are styles I wouldn't think would work based on the model in the mag, or how something looks on the rack, but seeing it styled here gets me thinking. It works both ways, too--there are items that get a lot of love that I may not care for but that's after seeing some of how the item fits on real people--something concrete like how long or short it is, for example.

I am definitely a "do my own thing" and try to wear it with confidence! I've not worn the maxi dress--lots of them here (Tucson AZ), worn by all ages and size ladies....For me, between my "walk fast everywhere I go life" and the act of having to pick it up to get in and out of the car--it doesn't seem practical. I find fussiness, in reference to my own wardrobe choices to just be annoying. I've seen some really cute maxi dresses, and my first thought was--could I cut that off to be normal length???! I'm also more one to like showing my legs and cute sandals, and that style does neither. However, my neighbor wore one last summer and lucked stunning. So I can appreciate the look on others!

Maxi dresses and skirts are looking like a major big trend around here. also getting many e-mails from so many stores featuring them! seeing them in lotsa stores and several wearing them. How is it with you? I know Angie hasn't addressed this, and it was not in forecasts for spring. From what I have read women seem to really like them, and I have began a hunt for either a dress or another long skirt.

Do you wear what are popular trends where you live, what Angie suggests, what seems popular on this board, or do you do your own thing? I am finding as I get older and know my style better, I am doing my own thing more. But I am also being influenced by this board to some extent. Havn't seen any Birkenstalk or look alikes yet, but not a lot of sandals either as some days are too cool. Can't wait to start wearing mine,,and all around me there will be the usual thong sandals and flip flops.
