I would like shoemakers to be more careful about the stability of the shoes they make. Some heels are so wobbly that they can hardly stand up on their own, and then we are supposed to wear them and not twist our ankle? Umm, no.

And I agree that it is irritating to have smooth-bottomed shoes. It's dangerous. Can it really cost that much more to make a sole that isn't slick? FWIW, I hate those stick-ons too. It seems like they peel up at the edges after not much wear. My last try with those was probably twenty years ago; I swore off them after that.

I saw on an old episode of Laverne and Shirley that they used keys to scratch up the bottoms of their new heels to make them less slick. Ha. So this is an ongoing problem!

Biscustsmom - those are the kind I tried as well. They just don't work for me. I even cleaned the bottom of my shoes with alcohol etc. before applying. Yes, they stay stuck, but I still feel like I am ice skating. Might just be the floors where I work.

Nebraskim - I haven't encountered that with athletic shoes, but how rotten!! They are meant to be worn outside and worked out in!

Merwoamn - YES!! Noisy shoes as well. Whether they squeak or clip clop. argh!

I buy the oval shaped (sandpaper like) ones from Target, Foot pedals (?) peel off easy, can cut into different shapes. I put a large one on the ball of foot, one on the heel and possibly a cut up one on the toe area. Super cheap and sturdy, peel off with no residue left behind. Good luck!

It's not just nice fashion shoes with leather bottoms that can be slick. I have a couple of pairs of running shoes that are incredibly slippery when I encounter water, such as water that's pooled a bit on sidewalk from someone's sprinkler system. Some synthetic soles are also quite slick. Be careful.

I totally agree. Ik hate slippery shoes and always check soles before I try them om. I have donated or sold all my smooth bottomed shoes! I refuse to pay for new soles on new shoes.

I have this issue even with textured hard-ish plastic shoes or rubber soles with no texture/pattern for grip--- some shoes have texture and are rubbery, but when it is below freezing they stiffen enough to be slippery. At the same time, I don't want a heavy tread, because if it is super deep it tracks mud and gravel.

My favorite shoes have a grippy rubber sole with light raised (versus grooves) molded tread.

Note to the fashion powers that be:

It seems that you have completely forgotten that most women want to look attractive. We like to look our best, and that usually means not fatter than we may or may not already be. Please send some clothing styles our way that reflect this desire. Thank you.

I hear ya Thistle!

I'm about to spend $16 plus shipping for a kit to resole some Mudd sandals I bought for $20 last summer that started coming unglued after a couple months of wear. The Birkenstock soles will be an upgrade and it is still cheaper than buying real Birkis.

Here's to finding better soles in the future.

Dr. Scholls sells adhesive "grips" that stick on the bottom of your shoe and work absolutely brilliantly. I have them on a number of shoes/boots with smooth soles. I got them at my local Shopper's Drug Mart and I think they cost $6.99 if I remember correctly.

I have had a cobbler do new soles. It's just that at $40 to do it, the shoe maker could really have just used kinder soles! And, that's $40 I could use for another pair of shoes. The stick on rough bottoms don't really do much. At least, not for me.

Cobblers can glue on new rubber soles for any favorite pairs. Think of it as custom alterations/tailoring for footwear ;-).

You can put stuff on the bottom of the shoes to make them less slick. I've never tried it though so I don't know how well they work.

Dear Footwear Makers: Leather and smooth soled shoes may be practical in some offices and in some areas. Some people may not have smooth wood floors that make these shoes equivalent to ice skating every time one goes to the bathroom or to a meeting. That person, however, is not me. So while I am not purging all of these shoes just yet, I refuse to buy another pair of smooth bottomed shoes when there are plenty of shoe makers at all price points that can and do make shoes that don't double as ice skates.

Over to you. Who would leave a note if you could and what would it be?
