Judy, grocery is noting! You can go to the supermarket and pick from the shelf....imagine a visit at the hairdresser, veterinarian or a dentist! I am doing all that now,in Barcelona, enjoying the simple pleasure of being able to express myself and be understood!
The huge storm is right now over the city and I was thinking of your son..did he go for discovering the city or relaxing at the beach? I do hope he would find some cosy place to hide from the rain..it will pass soon, after all its sunny Spain!

Oh Angie, what a global perspective you bring! How wonderful that you have had that opportunity to be immersed in so many cultures.

I love San Francisco too...lived in West Marin a long time ago....and was so happy to return there for five days this May for the first time in 25 years! My favorite discovery was this little tiny street called South Park...south of Market. I walked the mile or so from the hotel, and voila, an oasis in the midst of it all...a dog park, darling cafe's (that all close at 3 pm, btw), cute little houses, and the Isda outlet. Some of their clothes are not my cup of tea, a bit matronly or plain, but others, their more edgy stuff, I love! What a well maintained and staffed mark down store. I posted a couple of pics of the street, but could hardly do it justice:
http://liminalenterprises.com/.....-park.aspx

That and the Heath Ceramics factory in Sausalito ( http://liminalenterprises.com/.....today.aspx ) were my most fun places. I bypassed the downtown stores that are all the same ones we can shop in in Seattle...Gap, Old Navy, etc...and looked for more off the beaten path places.

Basia, my son wrote to me that he is enjoying Barcelona very much and it's also giving him contrast that Berlin feels more like home already...and he needed that. I know what you mean about traveling in herds, I have not done that...it has not seemed appealing at all! Logistically to me it can seem cumbersome to even have more than two or three of you to travel together...walking and busing and cabbing becomes more challenging with more bodies. For one thing, someone almost always has to go to the bathroom, and it's usually me...that's why I take shots of so many ladies rooms! :)

That's interesting the perspective of visiting vs. living in a tourist destination...I lived in Hawaii and never went there as a tourist. One can see a whole different side of things staying for a while, working, and grocery shopping, the everyday things of the culture.

I think that we too often make an opinion following a short vacation or reading. I had a very bitter prove of that when I moved to Spain and expected these sunny/smiling people I was meeting during the holidays. How wrong I was ! While at summer you are the part of the crowd they enjoy, on normal working days you are just one of them- clearly, the one who is not belonging! I thought the trick was in learning Spanish, but when I did they just smoothly switched into Catalonian...It was very hard and painful experience, but then step by step I learn people and after bitter 2 years I started to feel better.....Just imagine, starting the whole process all over again in Italy now!
It is and immense difference between visiting and living in a foreign country!
Also, please have in mind that people traveling in groups have a some kind of "herd" nature: they are loud, too funny( I mean funny just for themselves) and they tend to drink too much....with crazy sun it is a deadly combination. Yo would never believe observing cool and distant natured English os Swedish people on holidays in Spain.
At the same time, when we they alone or just a couple they tend to observe more and be more civilized.....or should I say:we??

By the way, did you know that due to the climate as well as being the favorite place for retirement of Europeans, Spain is called "the Florida of Europe"??
Sunny regards from Barcelona!

What an interesting conversation. I try hard not to make sweeping generalizations. Plain fact: American and European culture is different. So is Asian, Australian and African culture. Apart from Australia, I’ve been lucky enough to live and therefore immerse myself in all these cultures. There is no substitute for this type of education.

London and Amsterdam are my favourite Euro cities. Barcelona comes in third. My favourite US cities are NY, SF and Seattle. I’ve lived in America for 5 years and thoroughly enjoy how friendly and helpful most of the people are. It would be hard moving back to Europe where the people aren’t nearly as friendly or helpful – especially when you shop!

Becky, my trip to the UK was about 12 years ago...for three weeks..and there was one member of our six person group of Americans who was loud and obnoxious and arrogant at times (it was a work trip). She had a habit of comparing everything to what she already knew, out loud...saying things like "oh isn't this quaint.!..oh the way they live over here!" when entering the guest house we stayed at in Scotland, for example. It made the rest of us cringe...so we had to take her aside and tell her to cool it, to kind of "when in Rome...". She never really got it though...she was still doing it in the taxi to the airport on the way home :)!

Such coincidences! Enjoy your holidays, Basia...yes, I'm sure they will love it too, but their camera went kaputt, so I haven't seen a thing. Yes, Sart's great, I visit there every day...and here!

Judy, you would never believed that: I just started on Monday my holidays in Barcelona!!
The weather is fine, much nicer than in Milan, I know the language well and all the fond memories of 4 years of living here.....somebody stop me or I can go on and on and on..
While in Europe you have to stop here: there is everything: the sun, the shoes, the sangria....I am sure your son will love it here! Doesn't he has some blog with his photos? Can I invite myself??

P.S
I discovered the page of Sartoliasts through this blog and I cannot stop watching! One thing are the photos, but then these are the real people!

I have the impression Americans disgust many Europeans because they tend to behave rudely, arrogantly, and without class when they travel abroad (and at home, too, for that matter). Actually, during my one trip abroad (to Spain and Morocco), I never felt that I was treated poorly, except for the taxi driver who ripped me off with an absurdly high fare, but that could happen anywhere. My trip took place before 9/11, and I have heard people say that Europeans who disapprove of the U.S.'s political and military actions since then tend to be very cool toward Americans. Can't verify that personally, since I haven't had the good fortune to travel to Europe since then...

Glad you got the link, Basia...and that the post made you feel welcome!

I have been only to Scotland and a bit of England...and loved it...London only to go to the airport...and Paris would be my dream destination. Now that my son is in Berlin for a year, I intend to go to see them when they get more settled (they just went off to Barcelona for five days!).

I don't think I have enough travel experience to understand why Americans think they aren't liked, or aren't liked if that is true. Maybe it's a cultural difference? My son and his girlfriend said they noticed people treated them better in Berlin when they stopped smiling like silly American tourists at everyone. I heard someone, who was Swiss and well traveled, say one time: "say hello to an American and they tell you their whole life story"

How is Milan today...you're in Milan right? Sart takes a lot of pictures there, of The Sartorialist: http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ I love his photos and how he captures people...almost as much about character as fashion!

Thank you Judy! I feel quite new here and your post makes me feel more and more welcome! Yes, London was for many years my city No. 1. Always full of places to see, events, museums and shops, of course;-). Sadly, with that flood of East Europe immigrants after 2004 it started to changed...and not in a good way. I think that the immigration wave was too rapid and poor London did not managed to absorb. Anyway, that is a wonderful city, my beloved one! Actually the only one where my feet, legs and the rest refuse to move any more- trying to see as much as possible I tired them to death.
Reading lately some thread about the American culture I had to admit- it was very new for me. I am very curious how Americans see Europe and what are theirs favorite places. What is yours Judy? Any heart beating city?
Last year in Paris I helped some desperate American mother to find her teenage daughter who got lost in a crowed. Thanking me, the lady said: " I never expected you to help me, you hate us in Europe so much. It starts at the airport....". I didn't now what to say......
Judy, thank you again and of course: greetings from Europe!

I've been meaning to post a link for you ever since you mentioned your "beloved London". There is a blog I just discovered in the last month. She takes wonderful photos...and though she is from Singapore, she lives in London and mentions many locations, little everyday things, like neighborhoods and markets. I thought of you:
