Yes to the sheen Toban- or texture. I think sheen makes things read as darker. Working theory....
Thinking Kettlewells macadamia could be my white/cream, or maybe buttermilk!

Suntiger, Nope :). Just a few cream pieces that don’t get much wear. I have two cream tank tops that I wear under toppers to help make my wardrobe more fresh in spring. As well as two cardigans with a base of cream .... one with lots of burgundy flowers where I also show skin by scrunching the sleeves and another by COS that has blue and teal color-blocking. I also have a pair of cream jeans that I never wear because simply too much light. I find that the items need to have a sheen/glow to them and can’t be “flat” and there must be skin showing. Otherwise, too much.

Oh ... forgot I also have two pairs of cream footwear (one sandals, one pumps), but again worn with bare lower legs (and rarely).

Only the bags and tanks get much use.

I may try tea (or coffee) dyeing it- but am afraid of messing it up! May try that with a cheap cardi first!
I thought you wore cream quite a lot Toban! Beige or camel or tan are better for me-less contrast. I think you're right that it's the size!
A plum floral dress with it would be algo for me Rachy!

So many warm and beautiful colors can accompany this bag. So pretty and you can pull from the birds colors or like Angie suggested Dye the bag with tea bags. So simple.

I see you are sorted on this (tote capsule post). Just wanted to say I feel (and experience) these issues. I prefer low contrast, too, and my wardrobe is mostly medium-dark tones. I wear a bit of golden beige in summer if tanned and skin showing and cream in small doses. However, I do have two cream bags that are in frequent use (a cream and tan tote and a ecru crossbody). Somehow, I don’t mind that pop of contrast with bags ... perhaps it’s the smaller size? I love your bag and would have picked it, too. My eye is drawn to the pattern and not the white... the pattern reduces its contrast. Enjoy it!

I really like your hummingbird bag and the idea of building a small capsule around it. You could first shop your closet. It looks like any shade of pink or green would work. It might also look fab with lavender or light blue. How about blue denim?

I'm chuckling! Because I don't have bags or shoes in finds yet, the ROG just adds those in at will, and I take liberty to wear whatever I want for bags and shoes. (I don't often switch bags, and right now, I'm generally only wearing snowboots.....)

But yes, I find the ROG fascinating and fun. Yesterday it suggested a lace top (one of my dressiest items) with sweatpants. I didn't do it. But I loved the joke then and still do now :)

One thing it's helped me notice is that my wardrobe is pretty boring. I like that most things go with most other things, but I'm missing some statement pieces, I think.... Oh well.

I love your hummingbird bag and would have bought it too!

And I realize this post is no help - sorry!

You could use the bag as a wardrobe ‘focus’. I once bought a necklace that I wore twice before, it broke. I kept it for a long time because it was beautiful to look at. I built an entire work capsule around its colour scheme - hunter green, pale blue, silver, and black.

Vivienne Files does this all the time - creating an entire (large) capsule inspired by a scarf or a piece of art.

I envisioned wearing it with olive or undyed linen. If the ersatz OTF pants I lemminged work for me in the black, I may dupe in olive as part of the hummingbird tote capsule.

Well my wardrobe is probably 70% medium dark to dark, 25% medium, 5% light (beige). I wouldn't use the bag with black- too heavy and contrasty.

My rust skirt and top, beige top, and teal skirts work well, could do burgundy too, or olive. Some little accessory is an idea and definitely metallic shoes.

(ROG was an April Fool's joke!!)

1. An outfit does NOT need to incorporate an essential. It can be made up of completers and statement items, or just statement items. Nodding along with La Ped.

2. If you create a complement for the bag with earth tones that match it - browns and burgundies - you should be okay.

3. Or dye the bag darker.

I think if you go out and build a light-coloured capsule around the hummingbird bag, those items will be completers rather than essentials.

My grandma always carried a light bag in the summer and a dark bag in winter -- could it be a seasonal thing? Is your summer wardrobe as heavy on black as your winter wardrobe is?

Well, thank goodness for being able to return items, because I too have seen something in store that just seemed like “ me” and then get it home and go, this really doesn’t go with my stuff!

But in hummingbird tote bag case, I think it would go with a lot, in warm weather, unles you just can’t tolerate much contrast at all.
I agree with cat2– if you can pull out items in “ medium “ neutrals and then near- neutrals in the bag colors , instead of black pants, it could look great. Medium denim, various olives, khaki, chambray, medium berry tones.
I can’t see it super well on my phone, but seems like it would go fine with cognac footwear— I wouldn’t change shoe colors to match exactly or buy ones you don’t like or want to wear with other things.
Then you might pick up the white in a bit if other accessory, like a casual necklace, or watch band or bangle, or laces in not- white sneakers, or buttons on a shirt, but don’t have to.

Lol! Actually, ROG can generate a good ‘fashion week street style ensemble’ or ‘seasonally confused’ look (see finds below). I suppose if you’ve got a very tight capsule wardrobe, your chances of a classically wearable outfit are increased.

To answer your question - I don’t think every outfit has to have an ‘essential’, but without one, the combination of probably going to read as more hectic or maximal to the eye.

I played a bit with the ROG last night, and realized my wardrobe was more chaotic than I thought And I think I've discovered wardrobe holes.

Case in point...a magpie walks into a boutique and buys a hummingbird bag. In my defense it looked much less white in the shop.

Well I have so few bags this one popped up over and over. Sooo bad- though I do have outfits to wear with it.

The catch is- my essentials are mostly black, and I dislike high contrast on myself. And white is truly awful on me, though Kettlewell has some light colors in their Autumn section that look workable (and homefully wouldn't shift grey).

So the question is, does every outfit have to have essentials- and if I buy something to go with the bag-would that make it an essential?

Question 2- footwear. I'd use this bag for summer and transitional weather- so sandals. Normally in the summer I wear cognac sandals, but thinking burgundy would be a good addition- to go with the handle. Some form of white would be the obvious choice- but goes with nothing else I own.

Thoughts? Prayers? Scolding cause I should know better but Hummingbirds!
