This is why I don't like to buy things that require tailoring beyond simple things like shortening hems. My personal rule right now is: if I can't alter it myself, then I won't buy it, because I don't have a tailor I trust. Any sort of armhole/shoulder/back alteration is a no-no for me. I'm even at the moment sort of ambivalent about taking in pants waistbands, as I've found that it can alter the way the hips hang on me, which is a huge issue for me.

TL;DR = Too Long; Didn't Read. Usually used to precede a summary of the preceding verbiage. :D

Oh, yes, such a good thing to keep in mind. Any garment that involves a lining is always one to be wary of. Shoulder alterations are also tricky. And denim is particularly hard, both for thickness, and if there are rivets.

Though a determined (and skillful) person can do miracles. My mother recently remade a denim shirtdress. She's tall and slender and fine-boned (similar to Angie) except she's very much a pear as well. (4-8 size difference between waist and hips.) She took up the shoulders, reset the collar, and reset and narrowed the sleeves all the way down. Took 9 hours, but it looks great.

I can imagine altering a denim jacket would be difficult. Pity the salesperson didn't realise. I hope it will still be useful in your wardrobe.

Could someone please tell me what TL;DR means?

Sorry for your aggravation! It's tough for me to know what can and cannot be altered. I typically try to purchase items that can be returned and keep tags on when I bring it to the tailor shop. If it cannot be altered reasonably then back it goes. I have learned however, that the closer you can get to a good fit the better, especially with jackets/blazers because they are difficult to alter.

It sounds like it can still work well for you. Denim jackets are probably not expected to fit like a blazer or more tailored style and you have some room for layering.

I purchased a lovely Burberry denim jacket (eBay find) that I had tried on in-store. The shoulders and hip fit well, but the upper torso area was a bit loose. The sales associate told me that it could be taken in.

As it turns out, the jacket can't be modified because the in-house tailors don't have the machines for heavy duty denim alterations. The tailor also warned me that the small alteration I needed would involve extensive work opening both the side and hip seams, cost a lot, and not necessarily produce a result I'd be happy with. She advised me to leave the jacket as it, since it fit well in the back.

TL; DR: Not all alterations are possible. Don't buy a product envisioning what it might be, buy it for what it is?

ETA: It's still a nice jacket and the only one I found that could comfortably accommodate by arms.
