So funny! I love to cook, I cook everyday (pie crust and biscuit prep this a.m.), I entertain often...and I don't really wear aprons. I have one or two functional ones and I have a super cute vintage '50s dressy one, but only the dressy one gets worn. Otherwise, I cook in tees with jeans and clogs and I just loop a big kitchen towel through each of the side loops of my jeans to form an on-the-fly apron. Then I change as guests start arriving!

I only have one, and it's new and fairly clean. At least it's a normal apron. I finally got rid of my navy blue airline issue apron that I'd had for about 20 years (pinafore style!). That thing was like iron and was never going to wear out!

Thanks for the reminder to wash the aprons! I have enough (yes another collector) that I'll have my prep one that gets quite messy and then a fresh one for when I'm preparing while guests are here.

My apron capsule is definitely lacking (and in a need of washing too) !
I totally need to get a couple of good-cover-everything-in-sight aprons because when I cook it is a disaster!

Good reminder! I have one, nice utilitarian one in red. Since I'm so short it comes to below my knees. And it's plain so DH will wear it too.

A couple of years ago for New Year's Eve we had a pasta making party at a friend's house. I wanted to be fancier so I bought an apron that has shoes on it and says 'wil cook for shoes.' I thought that was appropriate for me!

I have 3! One thin cotton grey floral one that my sister made me when she was in high school and I was in college, one thin cotton french blue one that I found at Goodwill last year and couldn't resist (it has a pintucked bib!), and one thicker quilted with plastic backing navy blue one with sheep that I got in Mexico City. I usually wear one of thinner ones, unless what I'm making calls involves a high chance of oil splattering. I wear the thicker one when I'm doing heavy duty cleaning too. I like having 2 normal ones so that if one's in the wash I still have one handy.

I'm too clumsy for an apron to do much good. Used to have a royal blue shop coat to wear over good clothes. Miss that! So this is a very timely reminder to add a cooking coat of some kind to my lounge/home wear capsule. Maybe that's a good first sewing project if I decide to give that a shot.

Don't aprons and kitchen jackets get laundered as often as kitchen towels do? OTOH I guess keeping some bacteria colonies going is good for the immune system.

We have six or nine utilitarian aprons, many looking a bit bedraggled. I generally don't wear what y'all call lounging clothes, so I wear an apron at home 90% of the time when I am up and about. DH does the cooking, so I don't have to worry about those smells. The apron functions as, uh, an extra large bib as well as protects my clothing from my failure to dust.

I never realized that people might have whole collections of aprons! That's so cool. My mom had probably two floral aprons in regular rotation. I had pulled the Christmas one out of the back of linen closet and took it with me because no one ever used it.

@Hestonian I currently have 6.
@rachylou good thing I don't work in a high-end kitchen. I would be SO fired.
@Rae I have been thinking that next year I should have a Black Friday leftovers party. Where everyone brings leftovers and we have some good spirited food games and watch football. Perhaps I will make apron wearing part of the dress code for the event.
@tracina in my small kitchen (and being someone who suffers from hot flashes) I would turn into a sweaty mess in a full chef's jacket. But I would still like to have one.
@kkards my grandmother was just like your mom. She had a whole dresser with nothing but aprons in it. When we arrived at her home for family holidays, she would have on one of her holiday aprons (coordinated with the outfit she was wearing). The apron stayed on until everything from the meal was cleaned up. And extra aprons were there for those helping. Aprons being put up were the signal that we could officially move to the next activity of the day. Often the next activity was gathering around the piano in the back parlor where Grandma or my Aunt would play the piano for a family sing-along. Does your mom have soap and towels in the bathroom that only come out for company too?
So much fun hearing about everyone's take on aprons!

I have three or four white utilitarian aprons from Smart & Final. They're all clean except for the one I've been using the last few days. I can't cook without an apron. When my apron looks dirty I just set it aside to wash later, and put on a clean one.

For the longest time, DH and I had one apron that I had stolen from my parents during undergrad. It was bright red and had a Christmas tree on it, and we used it year round...

Last year, for Christmas, I bought him one a black one with a giant stag beetle on it. Not really sure if that's an improvement, but he certainly likes it.

I have too many cooking aprons. I've been working on culling, but there are ones I feel I have to hold on to - my graduation aprons from cookery school, the one with the button-on towel... Of course, I only actually wear this one blue one.

It doesn't look too bad. Interesting thing, when I put on my cooking apron, I get all serious like I'm in school. You have to work clean. They'll fire you at the top end places if you actually get your apron dirty...

I am making preparations for Thanksgiving to be held in our home. I went into the pantry to grab an apron before I started working as I always do. It was at this moment it dawned on me that it has been too long since all of the aprons have been washed. Not only will people see me in one of these but people will be grabbing them to help with clean up after the meal. And as I looked at them, some of them have certainly seen better days. Looks like it is time to review my 'kitchen capsule' and maybe do some culling and replacing. What about you? How does this part of your holiday entertaining wardrobe look?
