Yours and your son's, that is. I like a little teen tiny backpacker's tent... which no one seems to agree with me about. Maybe one day I'll get to camp in Europe. My fantasy trip is horseback across Mongolia. I doubt I'll ever make it, but I can dream! Should have gone when my mom was younger. I think she'd have been the only person who'd even consider getting on a horse that long. For the past couple of years, my son has said the same thing: "I don't see how you came from them". </p> <p>I only know one couple in the US who hikes in. We were car camping in a state park. He sure seemed to like it at the time, despite his later comment.</p> <p>Camping in Europe is all kinds. I know one family that has camped on the same N Sea island every summer since the parents met there as children camping with their parents. The children of this family now bring their own kids to visit their grandparents on the island. No cars are permitted on the island, so it is technically not car camping, and they break camp every winter, set up tents etc every June. There is a showerhouse, and their campsite is very well organized and comfy. I also know a family who used to take their six kids camping in Italy every summer. I think they took the train down. Those kids' kids are now mostly teens or older. A friend from grad school has a camper on his git in France, generally drives over from the U.K. And the "KOA" places I mentioned have cabins.</p> <p>I nearly forgot--we stayed in a cabin a few years ago and kiddo loved it. I want to stay in a cabin to watch the coming eclipse. That's my birthday weekend, so I also want to go rafting. That's pretty fancy! I have rarely stayed in hotels outside of the US; in the US, yes... Is the camping car camping? Or like cabins? Does one ever need to hike in? I think of Europe as so totally civilised and explored. My aunt and uncle hiked across Austria or I think it was, but there was a little hotel at the end of every day. In England, we'd walk the back way crossing through everyone's cow and sheep pastures, but then we knew the people whose land we were on...</p> <p>My brother doesn't camp. You can't even just crash through the woods on a walk, at least not in the N. European places where I've been. (I suppose there would be places you can do that in Scandinavia or maybe parts of Eastern Europe.) I'm not going down that rabbit hole now, but&nbsp; there are lots of campsites you can google near, say, Pompeii or Cannes. I have European friends who camp at the same place every summer. For me, the point would be saving $$ while we travel and explore. My son likes luxury hotels, so even when we have the money to stay in the equivalent of a Best Western (which, honestly, will take a while after moving overseas and putting together a place to live--at first we will rent "guest rooms" from owners/local tourism boards), I think we'd both be happier with a cheap "roughing it" portion of a vacation and a night or two in something fancy. A year later, when I wanted to do it again, he (in maybe 3rd grade at the time) said "I'm not so much of a camping guy, Mom. I'm more of a Mariott kind of guy". Made my eyes roll so hard my skull hurt. We were driven to jimmy rig a sun shelter from a tarp immediately and spent a lot of time under it. Lol. The wind ate thru my dollar store bungy cords in a day. They were weighted down with rocks and basically got sawed thru. There were all these little caterpillars out because of the bloom. Should be a big butterfly year too. I wore a dress. That is my other really hot weather item: the sundress.
