I can see you making the most of this look, Una. I don't seem to pull off slouchy and "thrown together" looks well. I do like the cuffed pants with booties.

How do you feel about the use of leg warmers or boot socks? Are there ways to wear them that work for grownups (not teenagers)?

Jeanie, maybe the sliver of skin is elongating because our eyes are trained to see that sliver and diagnose --> Pants too short = Long legs. I find that cropped pants with booties that are just close enough give the same vibe for me. When they're firmly tucked in, it does have a shortening effect, at least to me.

I've read (and linked to) the Babble series before. I tried all the looks that are labeled 'Right' and none of them look *perfect* IRL.

Infact, I love what Aida does. And I particularly love the example shown by Jenn. I'm going to try that!

Great solution! Will you be able to get by w/o wearing socks? This is a nice guide. I have spent hours rolling and tucking and cuffing to figure this all out. It looks so easy but it takes the right jeans with the right booties and the right cuff. I like the the little sliver of skin but I am still perplexed as to why a sliver of skin is visually elongating. It would seem that it would create another horizontal line. I still laugh at that "thrown on" thing. I would bow down to anyone who can "throw and go" and look amazing. It takes me pulling out half of my closet to get it to all work together.

Aida, there are three other posts in tbe series and I think one of them does address tucking into short boots. You of course have an excellent eye for what works, but I am hopeless!

Interesting ideas! Aida, thanks for your visual--it looks so cool. And I'm glad to hear you say you disagree about the tucked-in skinnies. I assumed it was a-okay until I saw it labelled "WRONG"!

Will have to disagree about the fully tucked skinnies looking wrong, that looks fine to me But the half-tuck she shows in the third photo is interesting looking! Am also a little surprised at how much I like the BIG roll with the booties. I will also do mine the other direction, short one one side long on the other.

I'm totally with you, Una. However the jeans or pants end up after putting on the boots is pretty much how they stay. I am quite often sporting that half tucked-into-boots look, and actually find it just fine. Having to fuss and adjust all day long is just not me - a little imperfection adds character - That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I know you do, and you style them really well! Meanwhile I find midcalf boots the most difficult. I do know exactly what you mean - the type of jeans that work for this almost need to be like leggings.
I detest that air bubble where you end up looking like Tintin, much as I love him.

Hmm, I think my problem is likely that the majority of my skinnies are calf-fitted but not ankle-fitted (because anything that is going to fit over my 15" calves is not going to be tight on my <8" ankles) with the possible exception of my jeggings. So I tend to get a bubble of fabric right above the top of the boots, or it just wants to come out and try to go over the boot, which then just looks goofy.

Eh, this is why I love mid-calf boots most.

Diana, I guess I just do a kind of messy bunch/tuck where I pull the boots on and let that dictate how the skinnies scrunch. It only works with more calf-fitted skinnies and narrow ankle fit booties, but that's mostly what I have now.

The half tuck thing has never worked for me. It looks nice if I'm standing still but the minute I move my leg everything goes to pot and it just looks bunchy.

I pretty much only like my skinnies with booties if the jeans are cuffed high enough to not interfere with the edge of the shoe at all.

I like the option you mentioned, esp for your climate and needs. I have to admit, a few times I have put my jeans over the top of the booties, woops...I think it's bc my jeans are so long, they're reg length and I am only 5ft 5in, but I guess GAP made these generously long? Dunno. lesson learned, gonna refer to this link next time so I don't make a jeans/boot faux paux haha

I can't remember if it was here that I read that one of five ways to look modern is to appear like your outfit was just "thrown on" - a little rumpled or askew or untucked. Well, this is my M.O. and always has been, so yay for that!

Then I came across this Pinterest link on how to wear jeans with different boot styles, and realized the messy half-tuck with ankle boots may be the solution to my dilemma of weather (can't show skin) vs. style (need to look current).

http://www.babble.com/style/th.....ts-part-1/

It's part of a four part series and I found the visuals helpful. Perhaps many of you do this already? It is officially going into my bag o" tricks!
