Most recently I had a complete stranger come up and ask me, "Are you from France?" and I replied, "No, why?" (My husband is a francophone and when we're out we do sometimes speak in French, but I was alone on this occasion.) And she said something along the lines of, "Oh, it's just your hair has that vibe!"</p> <p>Then there was the time I was on a 12-hour Greyhound trip, sporting a brand-new 90s-Sinead-O'Connor-style shave, and at the end of the ride this woman who'd been sitting across from me the whole time came up and was like, "Can I tell you how amazing you look with that hair?" Most comments I get are from young women, hipster dudes and first grade girls. But these women were old enough to have grey hair themselves.</p> <p>I would and do compliments strangers regularly, much more so now that I pay attention. I would certainly do that with every one of you on the street! But I have yet to chase someone down and do find it a bit disconcerting, although I am certain they were sincere. I have never had such an attention-attracting hairstyle! I saw a young woman enter an art gallery with blonde hair and teal blue streaks. She looked so fantastic I just followed her in and told her how fantastic she looked. She was not taken aback at all and talked to me in great depth about the colouring process. I compliment strangers a lot - as long as I am not interrupting them. I work on the theory that most people get at least a little lift out of a compliment and why not give it to them.
