Yesterday I wore a new pair of cotton clamdiggers, and about halfway through the day, I was feeling dumpy in them, so I just tucked them under - and they stayed that way for the rest of the day. No tape required! I think because they were tight enough and the fabric kinda stiff. I will probably end up getting them hemmed eventually, but first I need to wash them to shrink them. I suspect I could just hand-hem them myself though, and they would be fine.

I just took three new pairs of jeans in to be hemmed - I pick them up later today. The store I purchased from does the hemming, after you wash them a few times to accomodate for shrinkage. What they do is put a pin at the back of your heel, just a smidge higher than the ground. Then that is where they hem. They will pin them all the way down to the ground if you like, but I don't - I hate pants dragging on the ground.

I think this hemming method works well, provided you don't have an overly flat butt, or overly muscled thighs, which would possibly throw off the hem. In that case, it may be better to hem so the pants are longer in the back (flat butt) or longer in the front (overly muscled thighs).

I can't wait to get my new skinnies back - what's nice about this style is that you truly can wear with either flats or heels, because you just scrunch them up.

It is indeed a super idea, Sihaya! I am your perfect example of a reluctant committer because I dont like to limit my shoes/pants combos..I usually do temp hemming at home so I could take it off if I wanted to change lengths which is way more time consuming. I am definitely going to try the tape. do thank your husband for the clever idea and thanks for sharing!

When I buy a new pair of pants, I agonize over what length I should have the hem. Once it’s hemmed a certain length, it means I can never wear them with shoes of differing heel heights. So I procrastinate taking them to the tailors. I revived one such pair after it had been sitting in my closet for a year. I really wanted to wear them the next day but they were too long even for my highest heels. My husband gave me this brilliant tip that works so well that I thought I’d share. Fold over the pants – in my case I just folded it over its existing hem and that was sufficient – and run masking tape all around. Not only did this work beautifully when I wore these pants the first day, but then lasted through wearing them a total of three times before I was ready to throw them in the wash after stripping out the tape. I will likely tape it a different length after laundry and try on with a different batch of shoes before taking it to the tailors. So masking tape is a great tool to try on different lengths and also to help you out in a pinch if you haven’t had time to alter the length!
