thistle, interesting, i've always liked navy, but like you when our dress code changed i found myself wearing less and less black...i never minded a column of black business wear, but somehow a black top with dark denim just feels "heavy".....
one change i found really unexpected, i'm wearing more blouses....when we were business casual, i wore a lot of knit tops to bring more casual to my business ..now i find myself wearing more blouses to bring more business to my casual.....

Interesting! I'm sure there will be more changes as you get further along, too. Do you wear navy with black? If so that'd probably get you some extra mileage out of your older work black pieces. I agree that with jeans more interesting tops are much more necessary! How fun to find a color that you're enjoying wearing more ^^

As for wearing blue with jeans, I don't wear blue jeans all that much (mostly black, gray, and white) so I will happily wear blue with my non-blue denims, but definitely wear less blue+blue denim. Perhaps get a different colored wash jean to wear with your light blue tops? Gray or a washed black could be really nice there and would also look good with berry shades.

Yes I find blue tops and jeans a bit hit and miss as well.

I would think olive jeans would be good - nice with blue and berry!!

Thistle, I'm with you on no white denim when you've got little ones. I work with kids and have a 4yo at home (and a dog). I can do white on top, but bottoms are never safe from little hands/paws. Pretty much all my bottoms are black, olive, or denim/navy.

I'm not opposed to blue paired with denim in theory, but rarely do it in practice. I don't mind a good strong navy paired with lighter washes, and pastels like sky blue and aqua can be very pretty paired with dark rinse or heavily distressed denim. But these are tonal pairings and I find that if the shades aren't just right it looks off to my eye. Like Suz, I generally don't like royal or cobalt paired with denim. And if the blue in the top is too denim-y (soft, muted, heathered) then I just feel like a big blob. :)

Fun update- thanks!

I do find myself having a ticky eye for colors with denim including how clear or murky.
Would also look for “ your” shade of coral since “ orange “ and blue look fab together. Mine are pinkier deeper corals and cool rust in some shades.

This is insightful. I am another that does not wear blue with denim. It just looks off to my eye. The combination of berry with denim is breathtaking though.

Very good suggestions in the comment section too. I especially like Liz's comment about "officey clothes." That is something I never thought about and perhaps I should add to my list of considerations.

I won't do white jeans for now. Not until my littles are old enough I no longer fear going to work with peanut butter on the back of my white jeans :)

Yes, it really happened. I didn't notice until I got home, and I was mortified!

I may consider black. Some of my dark wash blue jeans are really dark.

A few months ago I emptied my closet and only put back in the clothing I was currently wearing that season and I was so surprised by how much blue/ink I had and how little black. I would have sworn it was the other way around. I've also started wearing more interesting tops. Have a couple pairs of well fitting, comfortable jeans is key - which is something it seems that I'm always working on.

My dress code change occurred when we moved from having a physical office to go into each day to mostly working at home. I no longer felt I had restrictions on what I could wear but still had a desire to feel put together (even if I and the UPS man were the only ones who would see my outfit in a given day). This is partly how I came to YLF - looking for ideas for a casual but still "grown up" and put-together look in mostly warm and hot weather climate.

I also love navy and lots of other blues and berry too. High five on those great colors! I wear jeans a lot but also wear olive, tan and white pants or shorts. I don't mind wearing blue tops with jeans but it does depend on the color of the blues and how they go together. I'm not a denim on denim fan for myself (though I've seen others do it successfully). I have light weight very washable toppers in cotton slub, linen/cotton blends and similar. I wear heathered tan, white or navy toppers most often in summer. My olive toppers are just too heavy (though I think I'd like to add a linen/cotten blend jacket in a gray-olive if I can find one). Or maybe I'd add one in another color if it would work with most of my sleeveless tops. I really need to take inventory of the sleeveless tops I have and see which color topper would provide the most impact.

Thinking out loud about that (showing some examples from Finds, not all my exact items) - I have three sleeveless tops in navy (one with white details), one olive sleeveless top, a plum colored option, and a white option and one that is plum with multi-colored embroidered stripes and two that are patterned.

I always semi-tuck - which adds another consideration to which topper I'd choose.

Looking at my own finds, maybe another topper in white would be best - the one I have is very unstructured and thin and I'd prefer to have something just slightly more structured but not white denim - I have one of those and it's way too heavy for our climate.

ETA- I did order this inexpensive ON blazer to try. Haven't received it yet.

THISTLE- woohoo welcome to navy and berry.
Love that combo -I started wearing more navy when getting older black didn’t look as good as when I was younger.
I always liked purple in every version- that goes good with navy.
While I liked pinks- they didn’t always like me- hence stumbling on berry by way of purple was a big aha moment.
The other find was blue green or green blue ( depending on your eye- lol- I refer to it as “Salem cigarette pack green “ ) that goes great with navy/ jeans. But everything from aqua to turquoise would fit that spectrum.
Finding tops are always a challenge colorwise. I’ m also fussy on fabric so it doesn’t help either. I usually stick with solids ( or occasionally stripes- depends on how they look across bustline ). I pick up patterns and prints with scarves 3 seasons and statement necklaces in summer.
I love blazers with jeans- gives it a polished look.
utility/ safari type jackets or Jeans/bomber jackets work good too, as do form fitting cardis.
Glad to hear your transition to work casual is going well and not a real stress point.

WELCOME to Team Navy/Ink Blue, Thistle. I much prefer it to black - although I DO wear black in very specific items, and enjoy it.

Like Suz, I love blue with denim blue. It depends on the denim washes and the blue of the tops.

I always find it interesting how many people dislike blue with blue denim. For me, it depends entirely on the shade of blue and the wash of the denim. I will happily wear many cool lighter blues with dark or mid-wash denim. I'll also pair with navy. But not with cobalt/royal blue. And not warm blues, either.

I haven't really had a dress code change, but I have noticed that I do not prefer to wear my shades of blue (especially teal/peacock, one of my favorite colors) with blue jeans. The only shade of blue I really like with blue jeans is navy. I prefer to wear blue with gray or white.

I had to wean myself off buying "officey" clothes. You know, the kind of top, jacket, or cardigan that looks fine with black or gray trousers, but looks "off" or blah with jeans. I had a habit of buying semi-generic "decent for the office" clothes that I'd only wear for an office, never for anything else.

I still buy nice tops. But now I always ask myself how they will look with jeans and more trendy, casual shoes. If they don't make a decent outfit that way, I bypass and look for other (still office appropriate) tops that will also make a great jeans outfit.

I've learned a few things since the dress code at work changed that took us to casual from business casual and allowed jeans daily.

1. I like navy a lot more. I find myself reaching for this over black all the time now.

2. I need more interesting tops. But then, I may have needed those anyway. My spring/summer choices are about 1/3 of my fall/winter choices, and I'm far less likely to update them. But it's been unseasonably hot the last few weeks, and my small true summer wardrobe is getting stretched.

3. I need to reevaluate toppers to go with jeans.

4. Biggest change: I wear more berry. My wardrobe is pretty heavy with blue, but I am not super fond of a sky blue top with blue jeans. Maybe that will change.

Any of you see significant changes in how you dressed if you encountered a dress code change? Any tips or pointers if you're suddenly wearing a lot of jeans?
