Same here @jessi - my ideals are a 12"+ rise but a 27-28" inseam. Hence my endless alterations pile of bottoms in need of shortened hems :P
I have to be extra careful with Uniqlo here because some of their items are 'Asian fit' but others are not (don't know if it's the same in TW or the west?)

Petite Cusp YLFers, unite! But toe the line

Pants are so tough! Not just the leg length but the rise. I order petite for the length but then the rise is always too short, sigh. I wore some newish Athleta track pants to a dance class this week and literally felt like I was being cut in half, grrrr….

Thanks, all! I appreciate the input. I'm going to send the lot back because it makes more sense...I can find another lilac merino at some point, either at Uniglo or elsewhere.

Carla, thanks for the pants recommendation. That's a fun outfit. Though I would not go for it due to the colours -- Still, I wish there were a Cos near me so I could try stuff on. So far, my try-ons there have been very unsuccessful. I love a lot of their clothes and am amazed Irina finds so many things there because the times I have tried things on there, the proportions were completely off for a person of my height and frame. But never say never. It's just that I can't do online with them until I'm more sure of sizing.

Ok. Packing them up today! Thanks again.

lol on the pants issue...I have the same issue re I'm not really a petite but not really a "regular" either, I almost always opt to so with the regular and hem. at least that's what I do since joining YLF.

and yes, its a pain to have to pay shipping for returns, but I'm learning to s*ck it up as I'm finding so much better select in sizes/colors/styling these days on sites outside of the US and that seems to be the way

anyway, sorry these did not work for you

Would like the pants if they were a smidge longer & without the drawstring (I also hate that detail - I pull it out entirely, then do a 'bloused out' tuck (where I stuff it all in but then pull it out just 'long enough' to cover the two holes). Or cover it with a belt (when not WFH).

The lilac jumper is nice but I can understand your issue with merino - finding the quality isn't so great these days across the board... and I know it's not because it's thin merino (have a Max Studio jumper in 'extrafine' merino that is still plenty warm, so I know that it's possible without bulk!)

The sparkly diagonal jumper I'd be tempted to tuck instead (agree with the others about the wide welt), but it doesn't feel like they rest of it makes it worth the effort...

Sounds like your mind is made up - can commiserate with international shipping fees, so I fully endorse sending it all back. Just be safe getting to the post office!

I saw these knit pants at COS yesterday and they were gorgeous, nice thick knit that could be great for work from home. Not too fuzzy or shapeless, more of a sturdy flat knit if that makes sense.

Glad to hear that you are sending them all back. This is what I need to do myself. Whilst all of the items look good how you have styled them, the issues identified will not disappear. Better to send them back and find the right items. I am a Uniqlo fan, my son's entire wardrobe is from Uniqlo, he loves their stylish and comfortable clothes, especially those with a minimal aesthetic.

So I skimmed through the responses and see I have nothing to add . If the pants could be let down a bit, if you could wear pointy shoes then...but you cannot and you might as well return the lot (although I do like the lilac sweater on you). I have thrifted Uniqlo sweaters for myself and family members and they are definitely worth a try.

So true, Miss Vee. So true. I'm planning to ship the lot back and try Uniglo for the lilac sweater if I can...Jussie, thank you for echoing Runcarla's comments. And yes, That sparkle sweater looks lovely with a slip skirt (which I don't own)...duh...

I think in general it has been too long since I made updates to the closet. I don't entirely lack support acts for some of the new items I am trying, but I didn't think things through very carefully about that sweater.

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in!

Oh, and I can second Runcarla’s recommendation of the uniqlo crew neck merino sweaters; they are excellent. Terrific value, fit, non-itchy, nice drape. Worth their weight in gold. Unfortunately where I live a very small range of colours only; no lilac.

Yep; the pants are a smidge too short. And also DARN them for putting that drawstring in! The colour and style is fantastic though, it’s a shame those minor issues are holding them back. Looks so good with your red jacket and bright blue sweater.
The lilac sweater is just a no brainer, decent layering item. I am a big fan of lilac and it will go so well with your cool toned wardrobe and your cool climate.
I’m going to say, I honestly love the diagonal stripe sweater! I think it’s great on you; but if you don’t like it then you don’t like it and that’s all that matters. We all have different tastes. It’s good to know it’s not itchy. That’s such a deal breaker.
Btw I just looked at the model styling of the blue version of the striped sweater,
she’s wearing it with a slip skirt, which looks great, and would have the unobtrusive waist structure to complement the top. Presumably you were hoping to wear it more as a winter option though, and not wanting to buy any completer pieces for it.

I love the pants but they seem a little short for the wide hem, to my eye. It’s a shame because otherwise they look really good.

The lilac sweater is a winner! I’m feeling the east fit right now so I like that size on you.

The striped sweater is nice but that banded bottom is so wide — I’m not loving that detail, honestly.

Return the pants. Too many issues identified. Wide legged trousers are trickier than most pants out there, but I believe you should hold out for a perfect pair. If you’re not 100% sold on the sweater, and have the opportunity to compare it with another, check out the Uniqlo light merino wool crew neck https://www.uniqlo.com/ca/en/p.....ode=SMA002. I’m super happy with my red one, and so far so good vis a vis no bagging or pilling. The last sweater is certainly interesting. Do you have any white or light grey bottoms you could try it with? Do you want to invest in other pieces to make it work?

FWIW, I’d complain to M&S about the long wait for your items, and ask them (nicely) to refund any return fees they would normally charge - please and thank you!

*Uniqlo charges for returns, so I’d hold out until you can visit a B&M shop for sizing and colour, but the quality does seem quite good for the merino-as-winter T.

This is all super helpful, thank you! I even love the disagreements!

I suspect the problem with the pants is not fixable, really. It won't steam out -- Jonesy is right, it's the stripe on the sides that makes it stiff. I don't want them cropped. (I already have a pair of glen plaid culottes, so have no need of another cropped pair.) And they can't be let down. I don't want to wear with a refined shoe or a flat sneaker -- realistically, they would be worn with my indoor shoes or clogs -- so that's a no go.

It's a height issue, ultimately. The regular length would be too long for me, and the short length is too short. Which makes sense, in a way...since I am neither truly petite (in height) nor quite what most makers consider "full height." Onwards!!

The lilac sweater is fine...not more casual than I'd anticipated, just a bit larger/ looser, but that's okay...I wear these merino sweaters as elevated tees in winter; they keep me warm and can be layered under jackets if I go out. I have a whole slew of them in different colours (see below). But the quality of the M&S merino is not fabulous so if I'm sending back, I might as well send it all....

And yes, I wish I liked the grey sparkly sweater more, but I don't. So that one is going back for sure.

Thank you all for weighing in and helping out!

I love that lilac sweater on you, and it drapes beautifully. Honestly, I find the pants a little short. They are just an awkward shape. The welt on the diagonally striped sweater is too wide to my eye, and a challenging piece to pair with bottoms. If you love the lilac sweater, keep it, and return the other two pieces.

Sorry to say but I wouldn’t keep pants - the length looks awkward to me. Honestly, I would keep only a lilac sweater which looks great on you, fit and color are both wonderful. Paying for shipping is a price we pay for buying less but better.

Trouble with you is that you look very good in most things but l take your point on these pieces.I would shorten the trousers if you keep them or let down the hem if there is enough to do so.The lilac jumper looks good, only you can comment on the feel ,but it doesn’t look ridiculously oversized on you just nicely slouchy.l see what you mean about the band on the last jumper. It’s a great colour and pattern on you but there’s something about the positioning of that band isn’t there?,hink high waisted flat fronted trousers could work but if you don’t have any do you really want to spend more money acquiring some?

Those pants tick all my boxes - side stripe, Glen Plaid, wide legs. I agree with Jonesy to try steaming the hem and maybe trying to crease the front to change the outline. They are so perfect with the blue sweater. I also love the fit and drape of the lilac sweater.

The sparkly top is not for me - that cummerbund would make it hard to pair with any pants that have a waist. But drapey, side zip pants might be great, if you own such a pair.

Not wanting to pay the return fee has kept me from returning a few things, and now I will only order from those places in specific cases. But I will say that the unreturned items I should have returned never got any better and those mistakes are more annoying than others somehow...

I also want to see the pants with a more refined shoe. The lilac sweater reads as a casual tee shirt in these photos, I think probably due to the looser fit (so the fit doesn't look "wrong" to me, but maybe more casual than hoped?). The proportions of the striped top do seem a little off to me.

Hmmm, what a frustrating wait you've had! Here are my totally unvarnished opinions :).

I I tend to agree with you about the pants--to me they look a teeny bit too short and the way they are finished (and that side stripe) is making them bow out a little bit in an awkward way, at least to my eye. I am very fussy about that type of thing so that would be a dealbreaker for me and I would return (sometimes if something seems like it's bowing out awkwardly at the hem I will actually steam it to see if that fixes it, but in this case I think it's the way they are finished and that side stripe).

I like the lavender sweater and like the fit, but how do you feel in it?

To my eye, that welt on the diagonal sweater is too wide and thus too much, especially in that lighter gray. If it were darker gray (and the cuffs were too), I might like it, but as it is, I find it distracting/too much with the diagonal stripes and slight puff sleeves, and the lighter cuffs. Also, the materials look off: the light gray welt reminds me of inexpensive sweatshirt material and somehow cheapens the vibe of the sweater, if that makes sense.

This is just my fussy two cents!

I vote keep the pants. SO useful for WFH. I clicked through your photos and by the time I clicked back around to #1 my eye had adjusted to the length/width of the hemline. I think outfit #5 is absolutely KILLER. Polished and interesting but looks comfy. It's making me think I like the pants best with a somewhat longer, untucked top -- rather than trying to give them a tailored feel? In that case the classic check pattern does the juxtaposition work for you.

I think the lilac merino is aces. Just the right combination of structure and slouch, to my eye.

Possibly wacky thought (that I realize goes against my styling observation above): have you tried the sparkly top with the new wide legs (yes, you'd have to tuck the ties in)? Could be allllll kinds of wrong, I can't quite tell about colors on my monitor, but it might be one of those dead-right, never-woulda-thunk combinations???

Those pants are really flattering. Maybe a style session with your shoe options will get things sorted... Do they have enough hem to let out?
This is the place I get stuck with new silhouettes. I can't seem to just change one thing. The new look influences all parts of the outfit.
