Thanks SF. Those sleeves are not so big that they'd be annoying ...

Thanks Helena! I will be wearing warm sweaters (and often fleece layers at home) from now until early April. I've come to dislike most of the super classic ones I have and as I gradually buy new ones am trying to find a balance between having "enough" and "too many".

How awesome does your hair look with that column of color? Wow!

Blondo boots for $44? Wowzers.

The puff sleeve sweater looks good, but I think the true test of such styles is whether they catch on things in your surroundings, knock stuff over, or are otherwise annoying.

Thanks Sally! I adore this medium grey/blue color but don't seem to have many pieces right now. The brown sweater is a cool brown and not good with my hair color, which is NOT easy to see in the photo, so I've already returned it, but something close in a warmer tone would be good. I see way more cool-toned browns at retail than warm ones so it takes some hunting.

Rachy, I totally agree!

Hah Suz, isn't that always the way? When you want something specific all you see is the opposite! I WAS thinking specifically of Rebecca Minkoff .... although I did see one bag online where she used gold hardware, on a red cross body.

Now that is funny. The only bags I can find with silver hardware are Rebecca Minkoff, and I don't always want those styles! Everywhere I look I see gold gold gold hardware. I like the look, too -- it just doesn't work for my colouring and closet!

Ship the silver hardware bags my way when you see them!!

Thanks Olive Green. It is one of my favorite colors for clothing.

kkards thanks, good idea to try the grey cardigan with my grey jeans ... both very classic but if fiddle length/footwear might hit the "current" note. Or I could go full on classic with a brown/cognac boot and bags. I too am liking more monochromatic looks this year. You know, I see that you have a lot of classic pieces but I think of your style as quite current ... I think you refresh often enough to make it so and also find more trendy ways to combine them.

Thanks so much Angie! So right about colors. I have never "had my colors done" but I feel pretty confident that I know what works and I definitely know what I like and don't! So glad you told us all about PomPom London. Gold hardware is hard to find and everything you said about the quality etc is spot on.

OOOOH! Fun experiments!

Btw, Chris, the greys and blues that you are wearing here are cool-toned, and you wear them well - especially #1 :)

LOVE pullover shapes #1, 2 and 3. In fact, #4 too! They all suit you well, and change things up.

LOVE the shorter length of these pullovers. It looks cheeky, and in proportion. I like shorter knitwear myself.

I hear you when a colour is off. You like the silhouette, but the sodding colour isn't quite right ....... and you can't fix it. Back it goes. NEXT.

Agree with Suz. Cuff the jeans and add combat boots to #4 - and you've refreshed the look.

Go Team Pom Pom London! You chose a dead right palette for your style!

Love the boots!
in fact have you tried the boots with the grey sweater?
As someone who tends to skew classic i knew that sometimes its easy in get stuck, but also sometimes it can be the smallest tweaks that take a classic outfit to a new level. Your finds show a pair of grey jeans, have you tried the grey cardigan with them? With all the emphasis on monochromatic dressing this year, i think that would make it feel fresher, while still being something that you would feel comfortable in.

Thanks Suz! Right, trying to keep the tonal value similar between pants/boots. These boots actually do not have a particularly high shaft but I get the idea. Yup, trying to avoid the leg-shortening look esp given how short and pear shaped I am. For a taller person the proportions are much more flexible IMHO. The brown sweater was a typical one-hit wonder from TJMaxx not available in another color or size, but I'll keep the style in mind. I did try cuffing the dark jeans in the last outfit, but the hems are a bit too wide to look good cuffed; they are straight leg but almost as wide as boot cut. Too bad for you about the pompom bags
being only gold, but for me it's a fab find since gold hardware on bags seems much less common than silver.

Of course feeling good is the goal! Analytical me forgot to say so

Thanks RobinF ... totally agree about TJMaxx. In fact this past year that was almost the only B&M store where I consistently found things that fit. Patience and careful selection is the key and I have still not totally mastered those.

Thanks Jaime! Interesting point about trying the grey cardigan with a contrasting bottom. Not sure I have any other than black

cjh, good points and I totally agree on the color of the brown sweater ... it could work on someone with a different skin tone or someone who likes cool browns, but not for me (or you).

Zaeobi - that brown sweater is a cotton blend and I've never dyed clothing before so not worth the effort; would rather look for something else. I too have noticed that Boden colors as a generalization do seem cool and bright these days, which is not my thing either. I have
two pairs of blondo classic ankle boots, one in black leather and one black suede and as you say they are super comfortable and hold up well. They have a plaid flannel lining that is surprisingly warm. I had another pair in a mid-calf height with a strap across the ankle but they were just a touch too big even with socks and I passed them on when the strap stretched out too much.

Jessikams, YES! Sales goggles can be good as long as you know you have the on. :-)

Agree with @Suz - the shape of the second one is great on you! But if the colour isn't right, you likely won't wear it. Either dyeing it or the same style in a different colour could work. I didn't buy the Boden jumper for the same reason - think I might be giving up on Boden temporarily, because most of their colours skew quite bright & cool in reality.

Just FYI, my waterproof Blondos have served me well so far (a little scuffed on the toes, but that's due to how I walk). They're still great against rain Yours were a steal!

Love number one. Great color and shape. Not a fan of the brown sweater as to color. I’m not good with these muted tones and personally the brown seems kind of dull.

The first outfit is my favorite - fabulous! Love the color on you, the cuffed jeans and the boots. I agree with Suz, the Blondos look like really nice snow boots, definitely worth keeping for the price. Not sure what I think about the brown sweater. I think the sleeves are kind of fun and it looks great with your booties, but if it doesn't make you happy then maybe it's not the right one.

I have gotten some of my favorites at T.J. Maxx. It takes a little bit of patience but can be worth it.

The first pullover is a gorgeous colour on you and the fit seems good. I don't notice any problem with the dolman sleeve here. The rolled jeans/ higher shaft boot look good. The trick (as you have figured out) is to keep the tonal values similar top/ bottom until you get used to the look (or match your boot to your pant). This will mitigate against the shortened leg look you are probably trying to avoid. The advantage (even for a shorter person) of the shortened pant/ higher shaft boot is that it creates more structure in the outfit. (Also, your pants don't get covered in snow.)

The style of the brown sweater with the puffy sleeve is fabulous on you! If you don't like the colour, send it back, but do look for an alternative!

The Blondos seem like a total no -brainer here. You love the last, they do look like snow boots, and will work as such (to an extent), and they are a higher shaft so you can continue experiments with slightly cropped pant lengths. They also work with skirts and tights if you like.

I agree the last outfit is classic territory. If you cuff the jeans and wear with the Blondos, it might feel a bit more current? Worth a try. I like the pleat on the sweater's sleeve.

The bag is fantastic! If these bags had silver hardware, I would want one, too, for sure. Actually, I do want one but I stick to silver, so can't have one, sob!

Fab experiments, Chris. Did you enjoy the newer options? Feel like yourself but freshened up? I always feel like that is the goal.

I've found a few inexpensive things at TJMaxx to try as experiments in more current styles. The general themes are shorter sweaters, slightly shorter pant hem lengths (I’ve always worn them quite long with a bit of a break), and 1 boot/1 bag. Had my annual derm appt today so no makeup.

Blue/Grey turtleneck. Neck folded down inside for a cleaner look. The dolman sleeves are far deeper than I usually wear, because I’ve always felt it was unflattering when the armpit of the sweater is almost at my waist … but this doesn’t seem to have that problem. Worn with the one pair of mid-wash jeans I own, boyfriend style, for a column of color. Warm brown round toe booties. I think this is a keeper. And this outfit is giving me a tiny taste of how a slightly taller-shaft bootie could work.

Brown sweater. (NO FIND) The length is good but I find the sleeves a little too voluminous. As I look at the photos maybe they are ok. It’s also a cool mauve-y brown which I don’t like with my hair color although it’s not that visible in the photo. They do go with my pointy toe brown boots. The top pick Boden sweater shown here recently might be a better choice although I’m not liking any of the color options. Pretty sure I'm returning this.

The boots are the experimental item here. I already own the sweater (with it’s ruffled shoulder pieces) and the print straight leg jeans (which look very bunchy here, thinking the fit is not so good). I’ve never been interested in combat/stompy boots because they look too tough/rugged for my style, but these are Blondo black waterproof suede and I’m kinda loving them!. I've never seen this brand in TJMaxx before and these were my size. They seem a bit like “snow boots” which softens the style a little. Blondo boots work really well for me and this would be my 4th pair (still have 2 of the older ones). The full sales googles are also in play – a $44 experiment.

Not an experiment, a grey chunky cardigan sweater purchased last year. Brand is Mystree. The cuffs have an inverse pleat which seems a little bit current to me, but overall this outfit is more in classic territory.

And last but definitely not least new black PomPom London City Bag, purchased after reading Angie’s recommendation. I LOVE this bag! It holds more than it looks like it would. And, with a little mix-up caused entirely by me, I ended up with 3 add-on straps! (one is wide black and sold out so no find). I've been using it every day with the leopard print strap. The tassel makes a tiny little jangly noise when I walk, but because the metals are fairly soft it is a very musical sound that I love!

Would love to hear any and all comments, suggestions etc.
