I'm feeling olive again after the better part of a year away from it. Also another one here whose year starts in September I hate to say this, because our summer has been so short, but I can't wait for fall .

Your thoughts make all kinds of sense to me. Though I'm full on enjoying summer (and dressing for it) I'm also spending some time formulating a strategy for F/W. Though we post style summaries and goals here in January, I'm way more about the start of the year in September. (Even my daytimer is a student's daytimer August to August!) DH's annual wardrobe review is in October, around his birthday, and this fall will be a year since my big wardrobe purge and I'm seeing some tired garments amongst the keepers that need to be retired. It makes sense to think about my style direction and plan for the coming season, now.

Your outfit formula sounds ideal for a Toronto winter and the colour scheme and focus on sumptuous fabrics sounds like a woman who is taking care of herself. Good for you on recognizing what may have worked for you last year, but isn't going to make you feel fabulous going forward.

FWIW, I'm feeling olive for fall as well.

The 1 day style change that happened after 18 months of prep. Not as impulsive as it could sound. It had been brewing for a while. But I love those moments of clarity.
Love the new purchases and direction, Enjoy.

OMG! Honestly, I expected little to no replies to my long, wayward ramble. I love this community :)

@Lisa - you made me laugh out loud (young miss - you have too many clothes) :)

The sweaters I donated had been sitting heavy on my mind for a while - embracing a new style direction was just the push I needed to finally donate.

@Lisa & @Helena Re: Winners - you MUST visit!. Tip: Winners localizes its merch to its community - Helena is right that the downtown ones and those in upscale communities are generally much better. Look for ones that have a Runway at Winners section.

@Suz - that's exactly how I felt - the stuff i donated was just 'okay' and not how I want to look now. and @Janet's bg jacket purge showed me that okay is not good enough and I need to move on.

@Katerina - you are right, we are similar in what we love, which is why i always love your posts. Your new bag is stunning!

@Gail - FOCUS is my mantra, which I never seem to be abble to stick to Bravo for you! And yes - it somehow is easier to give clothes away to a friend, isn't it?

@PreppyPear - I have been enjoying your try ons and would love your honest opinions about mine - that's what this community is so helpful for! That dress you were wearing the other day was divine.

@Janet I look forward to your sweater purge! Your jacket purge is what inspired me in the first place :)

@Nemosmom - you are right - it is so energizing to have a new style direction when you have been in a rut! I'm actually excited abotu my Fall wardrobe now. And thank you - I look forward to your thoughts on my outfit sessions!

Awesome! NAS sparked some reevaluating and editing for me too. The great jacket cleanout and possible refresh of 2019, LOL.

I need to seriously look at my sweaters. The two shelves of sweaters in my closet look overwhelmingly black and grey with a little blue and green thrown in, and most of them are five one more years old. But there was zero at NAS that inspired me at all. The colors this year are not my thing, and all the material felt cheap.

I’ll be following your process with interest! I love helping with a good edit, too!

Excited for you . Unfortunately I'm still plodding along in my own haphazard way. I did give a load of items that I couldn't bear to part with to a friend of mine who is the same size, it somehow seems easier to pass them to a friend than to donate lol. I also collected a huge bag of items to donate. However I have still been buying in a non thought out way for the most part. I'm leaving my job at the end of August so trying to stay away from anything work like which shockingly so far I've managed.
I love the colors you have picked and the idea of a capsule. I need to purge more so I can actually really see what I need . Focus Focus, that's what I need to chant!

Beautiful purchases, Roxanna! Just the kind of items I would love for my wardrobe too. I am very inspired by your wardrobe edit - I am not an extrovert, but my edits are also often emotionally driven and spontaneous. Yet, I have not regreted the items I passed on. Actually, I think I will start with some wardrobe clear up this weekend, thanks to your post and mediocre to me items will be the focus.
Like you, I love lux fabrics like silk and beautiful wool trousers and blazers, leather jackets and coats etc. I am so looking forward to seeing your try on session!

Staying tuned for this!

I agree that the most helpful part of the NAS chatter has been about reframing/refocusing personal style and less about individual purchases. It's simply a time for this community to do that together, which is actually very special.

I like the direction you are taking Roxanna. I love luxe sweaters with classic trousers and classy bags and shoes.

I have found my challenge this month has been helpful for me to direct my spending (moving forward) into the areas that get worn the most. For example my two most worn bags have been worn six times each and a my leather sneakers more than that.

In comparison aside from three pairs of pants/trousers (three-four times this month) - my coats, tops, sweaters, jackets, skirts and other pants have only been worn once or twice. So I probably don't actually need more sweaters or coats at the moment. Whereas whilst I feel like I have lots of footwear (15 pairs) but actually a couple more pairs will get lots of wear if they are day shoes.

This sounds great, Roxanna! I think an emotionally driven decision can be a good thing when it's supplemented by analysis of what's in your closet and what wasn't working for you. I love your new colour direction -- it's going to look great on you!

I feel a big closet reorganization/ update coming on for myself, too. I edit regularly so it probably won't sound quite as drastic, but a lot of stuff in the closet is just "okay" right now and I need to shift it out in favour of things I truly love.

And colour me outright envious that you have a winners with this kind of stuff in it . Ours are full of low end wholesale made-up label poly everythings. I hate Winners! I’m laughing at tossing out 17 sweaters in 10 minutes as it sounds like something I’d do . Young miss - you have too many clothes I too want luxe fabrics and classic beautiful cuts .

I had no intention of participating in the NAS this year. Frankly, I was overwhelmed by all the stuff (and all MY stuff), and with summer having *just* arrived in Toronto, I was finally enjoying wearing my summer wardrobe and didn't even want to think about Fall.

But then I started seeing all the chatter on the forum... :)

I still stayed away from NAS - I didn't need anything for Fall! Plus there was too much stuff, the stuff I was drawn to sold out, and it seemed like a lot of trouble for Canadians.

Then I went into Winners to return a pair of shoes for my daughter...and saw the most beautiful olive blazer from Theory and a sumptuous Italian leather handbag.

I knew I needed a warm coloured handbag, and I had been hoping to add olive to my closet. But I wondered if I needed anything else for Fall...after all, I hadn't looked at my Fall wardrobe, so I didn't know if I had any holes.

So I opened up my Stylebook app and browsed the outfits I'd been wearing the previous Fall/Winter,,,and I couldn't believe it. I thought I had been wearing all these crisp, well fitting outfits - but that had really been only around May/June. All winter long I had basically been wearing joggers or the same 2 pair of skinny jeans (and I am so OVER joggers and most of my skinny jeans right now.) Somehow none of the outfits from last Fall felt 'right' to me anymore. And i remembered how sick I had been of black and grey by the end of the winter.

The blazer and the bag felt right. Right colour scheme, right look and style I wanted to project. And I realized that I actually did need a wardrobe refresh for Fall - that I was getting by with far too many things I didn't love anymore, and that my heart was calling me in a new direction.

I went home and in ten minutes, I had given away 17 sweaters I had been holding onto for far too long (the is in addition to probably another 50 items I gave away earlier this summer.) I decided that I want to move in a slightly new direction - still neutral heavy, but filled with rich, warm neutrals, continuing with sumptuous fabric and clean lines. I came up with a palette that has been calling to me for the past 18 months or so: adding rust, olive, navy and camel to complement the ivory, grey, blush and black in my wardrobe. I was drawn to those colours last Fall but only added one scarf, so now is the time.

My main outfit formula will be well fitting straight leg full length pants + silk top/crew neck sweater + blazer.

Given this, I realized that I needed:
- more pants. while I had gotten some great-fitting quality pants through thrifting, they were all black - I needed quality pants in other colours (the one non-black pair of pants I bought last year, I wore every week - which showed me this formula worked.)

- more thin crew neck sweaters and tops with luxe design details to layer under blazers.

- maybe a blazer in rust if I find the right one.

So I went back to Winners and got a great pair of grey straight leg pants that fit well from Reiss (a HEWI for me) and a pair of funky navy wool pants from Rag & Bone. And a beautiful rust silk shell from Theory.

And from Club Monaco, I got a beautiful slash-neck cashmere sweater and a fawn-coloured cashmere sweater with a subtle stitching detail that seem about right.

So - my conviction that I didn't need anything turned into a wardrobe overhaul and revamp. I'm an emotionally-driven ENFP so that's how I roll :)

But I *am* going to plan my Fall wardrobe out more - I realized that's why it's been hard to get dressed in the mornings and that even my best intended outfits feel haphazard to me. I'm going to build a capsule wardrobe out of my new colours using these new pieces and existing pieces to make getting dressed easier, and make me fee inspired again.

But first - a big try-on session. I'll be posting to YLF because I want brutal honestly. I don't want to donate a bunch of mediocre stuff to then go out and buy more mediocre stuff! I will do as Angie suggests and have an outfit creation session, and ask for thoughts here.

And I have created a Pinterest board of the style direction I want to go in, so i can keep myself true. Hopefully this level of thinking and planning will lead to a happy wardrobe in Fall pieces in pics below. And if you stuck with me so far - thank you!
