It is a refuge (with a few exceptions) from being required to think about how I look. If I'm buying groceries, I want to think about the food, not others' thoughts on my appearance. If I'm discussing Rousseau or Foucault, I want to think about that, not about how I look. For many of us, thinking about how we look takes energy that could be used elsewhere. I've chosen recently to think about it, but really appreciate a career where I'm not required to do so, as opposed to general life, where not looking put together leaves you wide open for snark and insults. I have never seen the feedback my students give me, I have only heard about it indirectly from the program director, so I don't know if they have commented on my appearance. DH is a traditional college professor/researcher. He gives very little thought to his wardrobe. He says no one has commented on his appearance in his teaching feedback. There is a space for free form comments, but he provides his students with specific questions he would like them to address regarding something related to his teaching style. He has read that if he were female the students would be more apt to comment on appearance. Nice work.&nbsp;<br />It is a balancing act, however, for women academics.&nbsp;<br />One thing that has surprised me in the last few years is the rise of student comments on my clothing, in formal feedback. Each semester, every course does evaluations, which are mainly stats, but there is also some room for individual comments. I usually get at least one if not more comment on my clothing.
