Debbie, more and more that is what seems to be the deal for me. First, right fit. Then, right top with right bottom or topper and so forth.

Take pants. Pants usually either fit or don't, even in various styles. I mean, pants are still very hard no matter what, for me, but some are good. So there's the tapered pant that really fits, the bootcut, the straight--for each one there's some element about the waist and rear and hip and so forth that says it's a keeper or not (with tailoring where possible).
At times I've been about to toss a pair of pants but then said, these fit as well as any I've found, so it's either a) haven't figured the right top--it needs to be longer, or curved hem, or not clingy, or something--or shoes--so hem falls, or re-hem for flats, or something, OR b) do I think I will never wear this style even with the right other items? Or do I want to think about what type of update would make them work.

Whereas, if the pants upon review are tight, or saggy, or crease or flare in wrong place, or too short and can't be let down, or something.

I'm not saying I am not buying new pants each year, but am learning to see if it's the pants' fault or it's an outfit styling problem.

I think I know what you mean, Debbie. Sometime it just hits you as to what proportion is missing. Great if it saves an item you still like; I've recently had both "toss and move on " epiphanies and "oh, this is how I should wear that" epiphanies and rescued something from the toss pile. They're both fun as style gets more focused.
Usually the item has to fit well of itself, and be a good fabric (comfortable or easy-care or luxurious or color). As in, flattering in the right context. The ones I need to toss I can almost always finally pinpoint a fit issue--too short, too tight, something.

Jeananded, I have more fitted tops to wear with my wider-legged pants, and more fluid tops to wear with my slim pants. That way I can vary the silouette and not get bored.

I have come to accept that most full leg or even straight pants, especially if they are not tapered at the bottom, make me feel frumpy. A slim leg pant is my preference. With those, I am comfortable wearing more fluid or even oversized tops.

Great to hear this Debbie - it is so helpful reading about other people's insights. I agree that it seems a lot of YLF members are moving towards adding some structure back into their outfits. Sometimes I think we just have to make ourselves try different combinations of what we already own to see them in a new light.
