Well, if I do my hair right, it has natural ringlets. But I was running late to the competition yesterday and didn't have time. My hair was flying into my face in all my dances. But I tend to place better in soft shoe, and now that I'm doing more challenging dances, I like both equally. My favorites are slip jigs and hornpipes. I started out in a dance school that was part of an organization with older style: less leaping, lower feet and more focus on rhythm. So my hard shoe dances have needed a lot of extra work to get more motion now that I'm doing the modern style.</p> <p>And I'm impressed you sewed dresses! I always thought I'd try but I'm so bad at finishing sewing projects. I'm only one eight Irish heritage but so is Neil so the 3 kids are as well, which is fun. Way too long ago for any citizenship rights.<br /> But I guess I'm kind of more given that my grandfather born in Liverpool was of two Irish parents? Because of his birth before 1922 I have the right to live and work in the UK and have done it twice in my life for about a year each. A huge palaver though, sending all the birth and marriage cerificates back to him to the British embassy.<br /> We're currently really enjoying watching Outlander and Neil's heritage is more Scottish where mine has no Scottish at all, mostly English. Once the Riverdance show made it popular, it got more mainstream. The kids in our dance school are all ethnicities, unsurprising since I'm in a big city. Give it a try! The other thing you could check out is Irish social/folk dance, which happens at some Irish pubs. It's a lot of fun.</p> <p><b>Jenni</b>, yes, I'm something over 3/4 Irish, and on my mother's side particularly, I still know lots of cousins in Ireland. But I'm one generation too removed for citizenship - my great-grandmother was born there and came here around 1900. She lived to 104 so I did get to know her at least!</p> <p><b>Efbgen</b>, I don't know how the feis moms do it. Part of me wishes I'd done this as a kid - I started when I was 29. I know my mother would have hated the travel and expense and makeup and all. Still, it's really hard to get my feet fast enough as an adult learning it for the first time, vs the people who learned as kids and come back later. The speed comes back quickly for them. I'm in prizewinner - adult levels stop there - and I do quite well but I always lose to the one woman who was in open champion as a kid and came back years later.</p> <p>Such a shame about your daughter's knee. That's painful. Does she compete in the adult category now or with the "&amp; over" age group? Which in each category?</p> <p>Since I sew I have made 2 competition dresses for my adult daughter. She returned post college ( she was out when she dislocated knee in prep for competition at age 17) but she dislocated same knee again last year- actually 17 years apart from first one. Now she wears brace except during feis. Aren’t you glad the wigs are gone- lol.
