Bet you didn't dream your hard work could entertain so many people. I find everything you posted here fascinating. And, although I have been in most states I have missed the plains and some northwest states. I know they all have a lot to offer. I have really enjoyed your post. It is the next best thing to actually traveling there.

Thanks, Becky! I didn't know you lived so close. We do have some pretty amazing sunrises and sunsets, don't we?

SW Anne: Good socks, you are so right! And they last forever. I'll have to check Cabelas for pants this fall. Great idea.

Lozz_oz, Tanya, Barbara Diane: Thank you!

LaP: I really like both pairs. They are Marmot "Lobos Convertable" and "Mountain Hardware Yuma." The Yumas are stretchy and water repellent so I like them for travel and kayaking in addition to hiking. The Lobos are a more durable fabric (still really comfortable but you have to be st peace with the feel of the shorts seam).

YLF, Meredith! Do you have finds for any of these? I'm in the market for some new synthetic hiking pants that aren't leggings. I'll try to do a gear-capsule post later this summer (I'm a backpacker, so my capsules are even smaller!). Gorgeous landscapes, too. :)

BTW, you might want to check out Athleta for tops -- their " CYA" (cover your a**) styles are cut long for leggings but many work tucked in as well.

Love this! There are definitely different needs for different types of work. Your capsule is very similar to what I would pack/wear on a camping/hiking vacation. Your site is probably only a few hours from us. I do love living here and seeing those sunrises and sunsets!

I spend at least part of most days outside doing chores and wrangle animals and I need pants with cargo pockets. Phone, chapstick, a piece of bailing twine tied into an emergency leash/halter, seed packets, pocket knife, pruning shears. I just don't have enough hands! I mostly get hunting pants from Cabelas in the fall, replacing as many pair as I've worn out in the last 12 months, but in the summer I sometimes switch to lighter synthetic hiking pants.

And really good socks are worth spending $20 a pair on, even if it kills me at the cash register.

You think there might have been a town of that size in the Great Plains? How fascinating to picture that kind of town on what I've always thought of as "empty" prairie! Do you mind saying what state or location you were in?

Your capsule is very interesting to me. We went on a road trip a few weeks ago, driving to Minnesota. We stopped along the way for sightseeing, birding, and very short hikes. Some of my clothing was similar, and some of our scenery was similar, too. Your photos are gorgeous.

You're probably already familiar, but Duluth Trading specifically mentions that they make their tops long so there are no gaps. I bought a jacket from them, and the quality seemed excellent, but I'm returning it for fit issues.

I started using lip balm with sunscreen. I found my lips were getting sunburned.

Thanks Sisi! Eye drops and lip balm are essentials for me as well.

We are researching a site in the Great Plains of the U.S., an area most people associate with nomadic Native American tribes. We believe our site was a permanent agricultural settlement of over 20,000 people, so quite a departure from the traditional interpretation. We are gathering evidence of the town's size and social networks. Specifically, we are excavating storage pits and analyzing pottery and stone tools.

We also helped some fellow archaeologists in the Southwest U.S. because we believe there were close trade relationships. Their project focused on recording agriculture fields and sacred shrines in New Mexico.

What a fun thread! When I'm outside it's often for horseback riding, which means a button down shirt that has some UV protection is my go to item. I like the one's from Columbia that have a roll up sleeve. I roll them up in the summer and wear the sleeves full length in the fall. The shirt is long enough to tuck and while I'm not a big fan of bright colors I always buy bright one's so I can spot any ticks on me after my rides (I'm in the woods a lot).
http://www.columbia.com/womens.....iationColo

Hi everyone! I haven't been around much because May and June are when I head to the field to do research (archaeology). I've been in gear or extremely casual clothes almost every day. I think most of us like a good travel capsule post, so I thought I'd share what I packed for an 11-day research trip. We camped but did have a few nights in a hotel so I had a chance to do laundry.

Pants: 3 pairs (2 synthetic, 1 denim)

Tops: 5 (4 synthetic, 1 cotton)

Toppers: 3 (synthetic long-sleeve shirt, fleece, rain jacket)

Shoes: 2 (boots, flip flops)

Accessories: 4 (straw hat, beanie, bandanna, sunglasses)

Gear/Supplies: Hydration day pack, sleeping bag, pad, pillow, bowl, spoon, mug, water bottle, flashlight

Not pictured: Tent, misc. camping gear, 2 polished casual outfits for lectures and cultural events

This capsule was perfect for my needs but I am really ready to wear some real clothes and makeup. Hope you enjoyed my version of "business casual."

Do you have any specific items that are must-haves for outdoor activities? I absolutely need shirts that work well when I bend over. This means no exposure of the bra/chest and enough length so they don't expose a few inches of skin on my back. They are hard to find so I always buy multiples!

Bonus pictures from the field!
