Thank you for sharing! I was lucky to be in Egersund a few years ago on 17 May and loved seeing all the beautiful Bunad. One of my hobbies is embroidery, so seeing real "Hardanger" needlework FROM Hardanger was a thrill!

My friends there also relied on the generosity of a grandmother to buy their daughters' bunad. That's kind of a nice traiditon, actually :-).

Happy (belated!) 17 May!

All of these women in your family are so beautiful, and how sweet of your Mom to want to give you your own bunad now that she can. It always amazes me how much time and handwork goes into some national costumes, making them very, very dear. I'm sure you will all treasure yours forever (and we will be excited to see yours and your youngest daughter's next year). Love the red hat tradition too.

Thank you, everyone! I appreciate every single comment so much.

Beth Ann, what a fun tradition your mother participated in, too! Yes, my daughter got a moniker from her friends and it is written on her hat.

Joy, there are a number of bunads for men, too, but not as many men as women wear bunads. They are increasingly popular, though.

MNSara, how sweet of your dad to do that! I'm afraid that Norwegians are incredibly proud of their country, maybe too much sometimes. Most of the time, it's only cute and appropriate, though. Yes, we had rømmegrøt yesterday, and a lot of people did. It is very common.

Aww, Ingunn - this reminded me it was Syttende Mai - the day my dear (now departed) dad would call each of us and we'd hear him singing 'Ja, vi elsker dette landet. . . (often it end up on our answering machines :-)) How touching to me!

Looking forward to seeing you all in your bunads next year! For now, your one daughter is adorable in her red hat, and your mom and other daughter in their bunads.

Enjoy the celebration! (Does anyone still eat Rømmegrøt? I think my family used any Norwegian occasion as an excuse to eat it ;-)

Thank you for your kind words! I do have a bunad, I inherited my grandmother's when she died in 2004. The model is the same as my mother's. It doesn't fit me very well, so I've considered having it altered, but this year my mother announced that she wanted me to have one of my own along with my youngest daughter. She couldn't afford giving me one when I had my confirmation, at the time she was a single mother and struggled hard with making ends meet. We are now in the process of getting the bunads made for us. Everything is sewn by hand, and it takes months to get every piece finished. By May 3rd next year, all the three girls and I will have our own bunads, originating from Southern Norway where I grew up. The girls lived there for a few years, too, so they all chose the same bunad, but in different colors and with different embroideries. I promise to share pictures when the time comes:)

Is this off topic? Please move it if it is. This isn't really about fashion, but a small post about Norwegian costume traditions.

Today we've celebrated our Constitution Day, and we've also celebrated that our oldest daughter is leaving school after 13 years. In Norway, they celebrate that by wearing red hats and clothes on May 17th. (They also party for weeks on end, but let's forget about that right now).

#1 is my daughter with her "russelue", red hat.
#2 shows my mother in her "bunad" - national costume. It shows that her hometown is Oslo. She also wears a silk tie on her chest in red, white and blue to celebrate Norway. The embroidery on her costume pictures wildflowers that are common in the area. My grandmother embroidered it to my mother in 1958, for her confirmation. The embroidery on her purse is St. Hallvard, the guardian for Oslo.
#3 shows my second daughter in her bunad which she got for her confirmation last year. It originates form my hometown, where she was born, too. As you can see, the two costumes are quite different. Hers is based on old suit traditions recorded in the area as far back as to the 18th Century. She received it as a gift from her father and me and her two grandmothers. It is sewn by a friend of our family.

ETA:
My oldest daughter received her bunad to her confirmation four years ago. Next year, my youngest is getting hers. And I'm getting mine, too - my mother has most generously decided to give me one as a gift. She couldn't afford it when I was young. Next year I'll post pictures of the four of us in our bunads, all similar but with various colors and embroideries.

Thanks for looking!
